Newb Shifting ?s

this is a dumb a question i think and its gonna make me look like a moron but here goes... is it ok to be shifting at 6k+ rmps habitually? 1st thru 4th at least? i dont do it all the time but id say i got my foot in it 75% of the time. ive only had this car running good for a few days, i dont wanna tear it up already. i heard rx7s are higher reving cars so i assumed they can take alot "fun" driving.

your car is going to die.

Give it to me.

Do you really need to drop the clutch every gear?
do you feel like speed racer?

ummm, I'm confused as to why you would drive like that, much less ask about it.

ummmm, give me your car

SureShot 02-27-06 10:25 AM

Yes - of course - It's a sports car!
Keep in mind it's a >16 year old car. Rev it up whenever you feel like it, but don't rush the changes too much. Those old syncros have a lot of miles on them.

BTW: These trannys love synthetic gear oil.

In normal driving you're going to want to shift below 3.5K. If you are driving with a little spirit, then redline is the shift point. :)

so i wont blow the motor driving with a lil spirit alot of the time right? i havent redlined it yet, im kinda afraid too.

Aaron Cake 02-27-06 10:50 AM

If the engine is in good shape it will be fine....

But of course, I can't imagine there is anywhere on the street that you can legally drive at speeds to redline anything but 1st or 2nd.

Mordachai 02-27-06 11:51 AM

^ true, but it does make for a fun first and second!!!

jarred 02-27-06 12:17 PM

it would be kinda hard to rev the motor in 4th and shift at 6k in town wouldn't it...you would be going about 170kph! lol

Yeah, I totally agree, I love the sound of the shift buzzer in the morning. LOL

socalrotor 02-27-06 06:10 PM

Just make sure the valves dont float!!!LOL. Dont try the shit with pistons!!!!!

speedholes 02-27-06 06:22 PM

The second gear synchro (at least in the N/A) won't take a lot of abuse before it goes completely. Be nice to your transmission. :)

VERY GOOD POINT!!! Most people are not aware that the FSM recommends the tranny fluid to be replaced at the 7500 mile mark. That is quite a lot as far as manual trannys go. Good one to go with is the redline shockproof light wieght formula.

ProjectR13B 02-27-06 07:04 PM

i redline mine once a day, after its warmed up, because ive heard its could for the ports, if your shifting at 6k in 4th though dude, your hauling ass. 7k in 2nd puts me to 55 in my S4.

Dom_C 02-27-06 07:26 PM

in my old s4 ported modd'd up the ass n/a I was able to hit about 70 in second I beleive. That was shifting at a dyno roved 8500rpm .. oh what fun that was. God I love the high revs but i've sense gotten a t2, and having alot more power alot sooner is pretty sweet as well . .haha

playdeadva 02-27-06 09:27 PM

yes thats part of how i wake myself up along with the neighborhood. 7k to 2nd
i shift at maybe 4k most the time. let 5th and 6th open up

jeff_rx7 02-28-06 10:17 AM

im with playdeadva. theres nothing better than revving the shit out of your rotary through the residential streets at midnight

You sure you didn't just put low profile tires on your 15's? I don't think it's possible to hit 70 in second unless you lengthened your gear ratios, which I doubt you did.

Glad I don't live in your neighbourhood....

Maybe I'll bring my PP 1st gen (no mufflers and side pipes...it redefines the word "loud") and rip a few runs up and down your street to see how you like it.. :)
