watup rx7club.. ok i've been searching all over for rebuild help/links/write-ups and found many.. a little background, i have an 88TII that im 99.98% sure the motor is blown :( and im looking at an 87TII for my daily so i can rebuild the one thats blown .. now my only problem is that i am completely ignorant when it comes to the mechanical side :( ..im a mobile electronics guy :nod: .. soo what i need from all of you is --> are there any very detailed rebuild writeups, any vids i should watch any help from anywhere?:scratch: also, for those of you who went through there first rebuild with no background in mechanics, how did you do it .. what did you use as far as guidance .. thanks:icon_tup: for all the future help anyone gives me !!!!

Some things you need to do right are correctly setting the endplay, and the o-ring in the front cover. Good luck getting that Flywheel nut off. I just took mine to Les Schwabs and they busted it free in a couple seconds...

^ appreciate the links a lot ... im most definitely scared as hell to try this rebuild but im willing to try, take my time, and do it right..hopefully i get together with some try rotorheads for some help and start learning how to mess with this motors on the whole rebuild side ..

anyone and everyone feel free to give me more tips .. im definitely going to be doing a rebuild thread once i get started but before i do that i want to get as much info and learn as much as possible before i get started .. bcus like i said .. this is out of my league do to my ignorance on the topic .. but im a great learner .. so continue teaching !!! lol

this motor is easy as hell to tear apart and put back together. did mine about 2 months ago with no issues. but here is a link to some youtube videos i watched, between this and reading the FSM i did mine.

no matter what make sure you have someones help. the intermediate iron is hard to do alone. but its all pretty straight forwad. i think the hardest part IMO was making sure that the collant seals stayed in place when puttin on the next iron/housing and getting those damn little chunks of the apex seals into place. those gave me so much hell. but anyways its all simple and took me ~2-3 hours going at a very slow pace. i didnt want to fuck anything up

i've heard that for the most part these motors are easy to rebuild (for the most part) but i think most of you have had experience in doing this whether is being on these cars or others .. did you have any experience as far as mechanical work or did you just read/watch as much info as you could and dived into it? i'm looking to get that feeling of achievement and that spine chilling feel you get when your rebuild comes to life .. and runs lol

i've got a slight bit of mechanical knowledge but this was my first rotory build. its a lot more straight forward than a piston engine. really hard to mess it up. i would say if you have some good common sense and know how to read and study the info you need to this will be pretty easxy. but basically what i did was tore my motor down studying each part to know how it goes back together. once i had tore it down and firgured out what needed replaced i ordered that then jsut rear read read!! thats really all you can do. but read the engine part of the FSM. its quite helpful. but the biggest tip i can give you is take your damn time!!!! and dont cutcorners.

well im pretty savy and quick learner .. im going to tear it down while taking pix and writing what i need down so i dont mix sh*t up or loose anything ..

I watched the Bruce Turrentine rebuild video a bunch of times.
If it's going to be a street car I would suggest not doing the eshaft oil jet mod...

nick .. is the video from mazdatrix by bruce or is that another video.. if so .. link and how usefull was it .. keep in mind that I'm completely and utterly a beginner lol thx

I got the Bruce Turrentine video from Atkins rotary, along with all the seals and bearings. Following that and being very deliberate and careful during the rebuild, I rebuilt and ported my engine in my dad's garage with no prior engine knowledge, and she lasted me 60k miles. Finally let go due to seal chatter, probably caused by insufficient premix oil (pulled the OMP during the build). There's a lot of numbers and clearances to pay attention to, but overall it isn't too complicated.

tip: get a disassembly line going, everything you take apart put it in a line of how you took it out so if something comes apart for instance 4 bolts, upper intake mani, gasket, 4 bolts, lower intake mani, gasket, lay them down in that order so you can see how it goes back together again, when its all apart it should look like a blown up version of the engine, or whatever your taking apart. i did this with my transmission rebuild and it worked great and was a huge help to put it back together.


try not to bag things up because then you loose order of where they go.


also clean everything off you take apart.


a chilton manual would help to, because it describes everything you need to know and EXACT placement, measurements, tools, and everything else necessary to do this.

I used the Bruce Turrentine video, FSM, and www.rebuildingrotaryengines.com which has great videos from Pineapple Racing.

My rule is this: if you can thread the bolt back into the holes easily, then thread them back in there. If you can put them in the holes loosely (no threads to use), stick a small ziptie on the other end so they don't come out if someone knocks into the part. I do that on transmission bolts for example: the bolts go back into their position on the tranny, but there's no threads to hold them in. So a ziptie goes on the other side.

Sometimes you really have to bag them. Think about the bolts for the undertray. If you are bagging the parts, LABEL THEM.

I have to say... Thank you for posting those links. I just watched every pineapple video on that site and I feel pretty damned comfortable about ripping my motor out tomorrow. You are my personal hero today Nick.

I just started taking stuff out of my bay earlier this week (I'm in the same boat as you haha). FSM I thought stood for Factory Service Manual but another person above said Full Service Manual. Go to the links section in the FAQ at the top to see a copy.

i think the hardest part is just saying "ok im doing it" then taking the first steps. once you start it its alot easier because then your dedicated to it.
