New style vented headlight cover

I'm interested in seeing a headlight cover like the bottom right made for the FC albeit for the passenger side headlight cover. Good size scoop to grab air and would cosmetically coordinate with the stock TII hood scoop.

One of the vendors s willing if I can find a minimum of 4 more firm interested buyers. I'd guess paintable fiberglass would run around $100 shipped.

Interest?

Your photo doesn't load on the page, and when you open it in a new tab it asks you to sign into Live.

Interested to see how different it is.

Ok, not sure how that happened as it presented itself the first time and had no idea it was some sort of link.

I saved it as a jpg this time. See below:

It's a nice enough looking piece but do they actually do anything?
From my experiments with the intake, bringing in air from atop the headlight looks like the most convoluted/restrictive path to follow.
And what happens when the lights are on?

Not knocking the product, just curious.

dont think anyone will develop and make a mold for 4 buyers

if there was one to copy it would be one thing, but from scratch I dont think so

Rob,

What we're talking about is a hybrid of the one pictured that is made forthe Miata to a headlight lid of an FC. This thread is in reaction to oneof the Forum vendors saying he will make it if he can expect at least 5 initial buyers. So there is no mystery it will get made with the prerequisite.

Clocker,

I've read many threads on the debate of how much air headlight vents bring. But you have to agree any additional air is better. But when the headlight needs to be raised, the effect of lowered air flow would be somewhat offset by the then overall nighttime lower air temperature of what air is still getting to the intake.

I remember seeing somewhere on this forum someone posted a wind tunnel airflow analysis for an FC, but my bit of surfing I didn't find it. Perhaps someone who saved it or knows where it is can post it. But intuitively I would think the top edge of the scoop being toward the front edge of the headlight top panel, this design would catch more air with the headlight raised than any other design I've seen.

i may be interested but id have to see a installed pic, maybe photoshoped on

the way i see it any extra air in helps

HOZZMANRX7 07-09-13 11:50 AM

This might give you an idea of it installed

See below.

Bigger mouth to catch cooler air, more cooler air trying to shove its way through the convoluted path to the intake. This is the first design in that theme I've seen that actually looks cosmetically good as well. Especially if you're running a stock or stock like TII hood.

And to show how serious I am wanting to see this happen, we only need three more firm buyers since I'll take two of them.

Even cosmetically. I like it quite a bit.

Are the ducts going to be on the passenger or driver's side?

Miata intakes are on the opposite side as ours are.

I should have read it more closely as well, I thought you were just trying to get 4 people. At $100 a piece commission all 4 im sure you can sell them once they make it on a car

HOZZMANRX7 07-09-13 01:58 PM

I'll get no benefit of any of the Benjamin's. In fact, I'll a hole in my wallet as well to get these. But I'm glad the Vendor see's the value, otherwise this would have no chance of happening.

Again, this is a product that was developed for the Miata. Thus why it's on the drivers side in the picture. The end product in this case will be on for FC's passenger side for the obvious reason if it all comes together.

Come on two more people. It will look good along with a t2 hood.

schaft 07-09-13 04:00 PM

that looks pretty good, any clue how long it would take so ill know if i can get the cash ?

No clue. I'm just trying to show the vendor the benchmark he set of 5 solid sales can be met. But I have to believe it will be measured in months, so plenty of time to save up your nickels and dimes.

A few more pictures I found. The manufacturer for these Miata parts claims they will provide a 5 degree drop in inlet temps in a Miata application. Not earth shattering, but better is better:

schaft 07-09-13 05:21 PM

if it'll be a few months im in ill catch a few side jobs

JustJeff 07-09-13 05:45 PM

Hhmmmm very tempting. Not sure if I like the protuding cover or not. I've got an MS scoop so it would kinda be mismatched, but yet similar.

FelixIsGod29X 07-09-13 06:51 PM

Ahh sh*t count me in #4!

HOZZMANRX7 07-09-13 06:54 PM

I have a Mariah NACA version headlight scoop lid, which I think is kin to your Mazdaspeed one. The problem is the design of the NACA version doesn't allow for the HID housings for upgrading my headlights to the SakBomb type unit as the back of the housing extends deeper into the bucket. That isn't a problem with this design.

This design would follow what some army of Mazda engineers designed for the TMIC, so to me at least would look more stock like.

LOL Nick.

Updated list per advise from my NY friend. :)

You underestimate a 2nd Gen owner's ability to be cheap...

yeah, I've thought about the Mariah cover, also thought about the Attain one. If I decide I don't want this one being considered would you be interested in selling your Mariah?

HOZZMANRX7 07-09-13 08:08 PM

^ I would if these come available.

So Schaft, you are officially making yourself #5?

That said, even if Schaft makes it 5, keep the indications of interests coming. There is always some level of fall out in these kind of efforts between start and finish. And at some higher quantity the unit cost could come down more when all is done.

CarbonRXX 07-09-13 08:18 PM

Hey,

So yeah I can make those with a minimum of 5 buyers. I already offer the vented cover for FC so I will use a FRP sample and modify the shape of it.

About the time, I think it will take around one month until the first prototype comes out.

Do you mind to pay some small deposit for this? I am thinking 30 USD. I just finished a GB for radiator panels for FD and only half of people that committed actually paid so...

Let me know.

Marc
