My semi-flat black paint job + Version Select Kit (56k ok!)

Just repainted the car in a semi-flat black. The body kit is a Version Select Kit (a GP Sport replica).

BlaCkPlaGUE 09-23-05 01:29 AM

Honestly, if you give a monkey enough bananas, it can probably paint a car. The difference between a monkeys job and a professionals job is how good the paint looks ;)

BklynRX7 09-23-05 01:34 AM

I think it looks good in mot of those pics. In person si the real test. most flat black fc's look like dirt, this one seems ok. More like satin black than primer black.

RidicilousRx7 09-23-05 02:27 AM

what hood is that and where did u get it!!!!

Makenzie71 09-23-05 02:32 AM

looks like a "fair" job but it's not really done right. Did you rattle-can it? The hood looks quite splotchy...but I don't like that hood to begin with so I'm biased aainst it already. The fenders look really smooth, though.

Don't listen to all the haters. I'm in the same boat. Nice job on yours.

I have a 2nd gen too, but this is the toy. And yes there are stripes on the hood and no it is not rattle can.

ultradef 09-23-05 09:21 AM

Cool hood. Fitment looks kinda crappy on the Version Select kit though (especially around the headlights). Nice FC!

YearsOfDecay 09-23-05 09:25 AM

Has ANYBODY else notd that he mounted the BOV THROUGH the HOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats a FIRST for me man......... !!!!!

Where,d ya get the bumper.... I likes it

90WhiteVrt 09-23-05 10:21 AM

Do you live in Gotham city by any chance?

introVert 09-23-05 11:35 AM

No, that would be :batman:

rx7whore 09-23-05 11:46 AM

how was the fitment of that kit, seeing how you have an S4...or did you get the front fenders?

88rx7gxl 09-23-05 12:03 PM

Flat colored paint = waste of money!!

Since when is it cool to have oxidized looking paint?
What is the appeal of a "flat" color?
Do you like to look poor?
If you actually paid good money for that paintjob your an idiot.
You could of had the same results with Wal Mart paint. $0.99 per can!!
I think about 8-10 cans would have done the trick... Looking at $8-$10 in paint...

Next time I go look at a new car im going to tell the salesperson " I really like this car, but that glossy painjob just looks horrible. How could you even have something like that on your lot!?"

Yah I saw that last night as well, just didn't post about it. I was kind of confused... like what was the point?

Fumi 09-23-05 12:08 PM

hey jaiyurai
where did you get your hood?

ShadowX 09-23-05 01:42 PM

The car is filthy in that pic, but I'm not sure I'd say it's splotchy. Actually, the only spots that didn't come out smooth are those little marks on the front bumper where the can sputtered. And if you look closely, you can see this wierd two-tone kinda thing on the top of the car.

Since this kit was made for an S5, the fitment in the front wasn't great, there was quite a large gap The reason it's worse on one side is because my passenger fender and the headlight are still a little damaged from an accident.

As for the flat color thing, I was always against it and never understood it. Until I roughed the original black paint before I repainted it. I just finished painting it a blue with gold peal in the clear, but the clear went on pretty rough. I sanded it out a little, but it wasn't worth it. So I figured I'd give this "semi-flat" a shot because the flat black looked so good when I was prepping to paint it originally. On my site there's a pic where I tried to get the pearl to show up.

In real life it looks really clean. I'm still on the fence on whether or not I like this better than a gloss paint, but it's not so bad that I'm going to repaint it next week or anything. I only paid $2.50 a can and used 20 cans, so $50 bucks wasn't too bad for an experiment in painting. 8-10 cans might work if I did only a single coat and didn't have sideskirts to paint.

The hood is the prototype hood from AutoRnD. The real ones are made of CF and from what I understand their a good price. You'd have to contact them to find out for sure.

Oh and as for the BOV through the hood...why not?! I had never seen it before and I just wanted to see how it would look. The CF hood I had on there at the time was already damaged so no real harm in trying. The funny thing about that was the old center section in my turbo was shot, so everytime the BOV opened, it shot a nice spray of oil on to the hood.

Digi7ech 09-23-05 01:43 PM

Yeah.
Some close ups on that hood would be nice :D

I want to eventually go Vmount and will need to make one like that.

Looks Very nice .

Funkspectrum 09-23-05 02:24 PM

i've been waiting for autornd to come out with that damn hood so I can buy one!

SmogSUX 09-23-05 05:51 PM

I dont see the hood on their site...link?

RotaryEvolution 09-23-05 06:14 PM

flat black kills the cars potential to look nice.

lose the wheels, get a nice coat of real paint on it and it would look very nice.

edit: the BOV out the hood is a ricer move and by the pics looks like you need a rebuild, or turbo as you mentioned.

ilike2eatricers 09-23-05 07:08 PM

The hood looks pretty good but I'm totally against the BOV on the outside of the hood for a few reasons:

1) makes it easier for people to steal (not sure if it's a street driven car or not)
2) too flashy and will attract the wrong kind of attention from would be thiefs and/or cops
3) condensation will build up in the bov if parked outside and prematurely wear out the seal
4) seems like it would make the BOV operate at less than optimal levels since air is being pushed into it while trying to vent it

ShadowX 09-25-05 08:56 PM

http://fcdrifter.org/gallery/albums/...b_DSC00004.JPG

If you look on the bottom side of the hood you'll see the vent that keep air moving through the IC and out through the vents in the hood. I still have to permanently fab a baffle to put between the IC and the front of the engine to further keep air moving up into the intercooler. All that with the underskirt on the car should put a signigicant amount of air through the intercooler. (I also have the little piece that goes in front on the radiator to keep air flowing over.)

Just to start a little flame here.:D

So if I painted my widebody 1st gen a nice, brite and SHINEY pink, that's ok. But If the flame job was in a FLAT fuschia, you wouldn't like it. Is that what you are saying?

Btw, I took my car to a nearby car club meet last night, and not a single person disliked the matte black paint. I recieved many complements, including guys that had some very fine street rods and others that had near concourse restorations. Fun part was, nobody knew what it was, even though I was parked next to an S4 TII.

There were cars from the 40's, clear up to a late model Neon SRT, so the car 'culture' was quite well represented.

Just because we choose to do things different than what your expectations are, doesn't make us idiots. You, however, make yourself look like one with your narrow-mindedness

jon88se 09-25-05 10:01 PM

ShadowX - you spray painted your car...pretty damn far from "cool as hell."

ShadowX 09-25-05 10:18 PM

jon - it was just a joke man.

As much as I don't like it, I don't think that I can agree that its totall ass. Lets put it this way, at least he doesn't have paint chipping, or rust spots like most of us.
Secondly, it takes alot of time and skill to paint a car, whether you use walmart paint or a air brush, it still takes talent. Cleaning, sanding and the point of NOT missing a single spot is the hardest part or else you get bubbeling and whatnot. I dont see any in his pics.

driftseshrx7 09-25-05 10:25 PM

Trochoid, that's a sweet FB. What kind of rims are those?

3 piece Epsilons. I need to find another pair that are the same width as the rears. They are rare and I was told they were 1200 each, new.
