My oil filter won't budge PLEASE HELP ME!!!

My oil filter is stuck on there like nobodies business and it's really starting to piss me off. Not even my handy dandy filter wrench can make it budge. PLEASE SOMEBODY GIVE ME A TIP OR TRICK THAT YOU USE SO THAT I DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THE CITY BUS TO SCHOOL TOMORROW!

Jam a screwdriver through it and then turn it with the screwdriver. Old mechanic's trick...

fcunderwater 03-11-07 05:45 PM

Yeah I was trying to jam a screwdriver in it, but mainly cause I was so pissed off. Now that I know that my actions are justified I'm going to go smash that shit to pieces :) Thanks!

and if push comes to shove and it won't come off I'm gonna ask my mom. haha

+1 I just did my first oil change on my 7 yesterday and I could'ntr et it off so I stuck a screwdriver in the side and then it came off with a bit of abuse lol..

make sure to lube the gasket up very good so it dont happen again..

put some rags under and around the filter to and have some brake cleaner handy to clean any messes

+2 on the screwdriver trick

I think this filter is the hardest one I've ever had to deal with. I've done plenty of them and usually when it's stuck my wrench can get it off but damn this ones a bitch...

Don't be a pussy.

I personally like to use a set of giant vice grips.

Old Mechanic's Tricks

Yeah I've done it before... made a mess!

SpooledupRacing 03-11-07 06:39 PM

if u do it high enough and tap the scredriver in with a hammer instead of bustin it all up it wont be messy at all

Turbo II 03-11-07 06:55 PM

I had to do it on my 1970 Dodge Challenger back in the day... First try went in fine but couldn't get it to turn, just made a bigger hole! Second try same thing so I just tore it apart and finally put a pair of vice grips on it and got it off.

If you drain the oil out and wait a bit, then there wont be any oil in the filter, FYI.

Turbo II 03-11-07 07:03 PM

Other than that one I've never had one on anything else give me a problem. I should have punched a hole in the bottom and let it drain but at the time...

Sideways7 03-11-07 07:11 PM

In fact, if the car hasn't run in a while there shouldn't be any oil in the filter anyway.
That said, we have it so easy changing out oil filters. You should try my wife's Mazda 6. The filter is wedged above the exhaust manifold in a way that you cant get a filter wrench around it without being a contortionist. I don't even do the oil changes on her car anymore, I just take it to a lube place....

Sounds like the RX-8 from what an owner said at a meet last night. Said it was a pain to get to it also.

fcunderwater 03-11-07 07:35 PM

now my car won't start... :(

SpooledupRacing 03-11-07 07:37 PM

what did u do?

Boosted11 03-11-07 07:38 PM

I would try getting a pipe thats a couple feet long so you get more leverage, if its that serious.

I put in that tune up kit you sold me (except the Fuel filter) and now it sounds like it wants to start it just can't keep it going.
