I get about 22-24mpg on the highway & on the street maybe 16-17mpg. The motor is rebuilt and it's an s5 N/A and it gets surprisingly well numbers for it being a rotary. That's with cruisin speeds & driving the speed limit

livinglegend2100 09-08-10 09:35 PM

the absolute most ive gotten in my n/a 86' is 20mpg. but that was 1/4 throttle, never above 2800 for the entire tank. got 305 miles out of it. surprised the hell out of me...

normally i get around 240 miles to a tank. give or take the mood

mario1386 09-08-10 09:56 PM

i get around 17-18 city driving semi-spirted and its the same with a/c on
highway like around 23-24 maybe 26 depending on weather

6pi wired open stock motor with 194,xxx
3in exhaust, header, emission removed, and e fans stock airbox with a drop-in k&n rest of mods look at sig

jjwalker 09-08-10 10:09 PM

S5 Vert, 4k miles on motor. ported exhaust ports, stock intake ports.

Roughly 13mpg if not less on the street and up to 22mpg on the highway if I sit at 80mph. I get better at 80mph than I do at 60.

10yearrx7 09-08-10 10:18 PM

^ Same with my dads E46 M3. He averaged 85mph on the way to vegas and got 34mpg on that tank. Thats why BMW is BMW, they know how to get things right.

trooper001 09-08-10 10:21 PM

8 mpg at the moment shifting at 3k. Trying to figure out what the problem is.

NatAsRex7 09-08-10 10:37 PM

15 mpg
88 s4 na with i/h/e

Rotaries kills earth but its fun to drive =]

FelixIsGod29X 09-08-10 11:23 PM

I throw 20 bucks worth into my tank. At the price right now i get 7.1xx gallons. Usually get a little only 100 miles then need to throw 20 bucks worth in it again. Averages out to an estimate of 14+ MPG. That sucks but i do city driving 99% of the time with a mostly light foot. If it were all highway and i stayed under 70mph my mpg would be great. Car is fully tuned up and a healthy engine sooo i dont know how you people can get great mpg.

cloudx189 09-09-10 12:45 AM

20 Average spirited driving on an S5 NA Streetport

13B Etc 09-09-10 07:34 AM

What a bunch of gas hogs... I usually get 25 or 26 MPG mixed driving (modified 88 N/A).

durtled 09-09-10 08:22 AM

well i can't fill up my car cause the tank has a leak somewhere going to address that very soon. but this week driving fast i actually got pretty good mileage prolly like 10 / gal but its normally about 9 need to do a rebuild

I'd love to know the secret of the guys who can get 26 mpg or higher on the highway out of an NA rotary. I've put about 140,000 miles on my two NAs over the years, and I think I just set a personal best of 24 mpg this past weekend. It helps when you don't encounter much traffic because there isn't so much acceleration/deceleration going on.

Around town, I used to get 14-15 mpg out of my street ported S5 NA and I get the same now out of my lower-mileage S4 NA.

j9fd3s 09-09-10 11:53 AM

havent been keeping track lately but the current STOCK s4 gxl gets 18ish in town and 22-23 on the road.

i think the turbo cars have more potential for mileage, as they run in closed loop in vacuum, the NA's don't.

nitronatefc 09-09-10 12:31 PM

I'm currently breaking in my new engine. I am running the motor NA at the moment. My air filter is just stuck on the TB elbow for now, and the turbo is just free-wheeling. The intercooler isn't even in the car currently. My car is running a little rich, and idle is at 1500 rpm. I haven't gone over 3600 rpm. The results?

A whopping 9.55 mpg, driven as nice as this car is ever going to be driven. True I run E85, but damn.....

i never rev - and just cruise control all the way to work.

daviddeep 09-09-10 01:20 PM

I'll bet where you live has something to do with it too. Most of my highway driving is between D.C. and Pittsburgh which involves some pretty substantial elevation changes. If you're in a level place, that probably helps. I also tend to avoid the cruise control because it seems to take some of the fun away from driving. (My current RX-7 is a second car and not used for ordinary commuting.)

actually i live in the mountains of Idaho. google "sun valley Idaho"

im at 7000 feet or so and my elevation changes by about 500 feet. maybe 800. but it's straight as an arrow from my house to work (20-ish miles @ 55 mph) with just about no traffic.

OP: Covered in FAQ. 17/25 is normal if nothing's broken.

I've gotten 26 on 2 different RX-7s just by driving at 60-70mph. But at faster speeds it's typically 22-23 freeway.

Minor factors: O2 sensor + constant throttle on freeway, basic maintenance
Major factors: broken fuel delivery / sensors / etc., poor compression, etc., speed (but acceleration doesn't matter), excessive braking (e.g., from tailing someone too close). Driving below 30mph really kills mpg too.

The two major ways to boost mpg beyond stock are tuning lean, but you increase risk of detonation if you go too far, and a taller final drive ratio such as the one from a convertible, but this reduces acceleration. Each is good for 2-3 mpg IIRC.

zoomy942 09-10-10 08:49 AM

^^

Good call on the final drive - love my vert

Bamato 09-10-10 09:34 AM

My S5 T2 averages 17-19 with full exhaust, an rtek 1.7 and 750cc secondaries. It's mostly freeway driving, and I usually behave and stay off the turbo. With AC is averages 16-18.

NYsNumba1Man 09-10-10 01:22 PM

thats incredible.

I get like 170-180 on a full tank of gas (i've never run it until stalling though)

pretty stock s4. I need to know how to get such high mpg O_o I don't run the a/c ever and highest i get before shifting is 4k when i'm feeling a little dangerous.

trooper001 09-11-10 10:22 AM

I think it's the fuel injectors needing service (stuck, leaking, etc). I'm going to send mine off within these next couple of weeks and see how I do on the mpg department. Wish I could hit 15mpg minumum.

RotaryEvolution 09-11-10 10:27 AM

i got 22.5mpg with the stage 2 hybrid turbo on the highway and around 15 in town. now with the t70 turbo and 300WHP+ i get right around 20 on the highway and about 13 in town, haven't done fine tuning with the big turbo yet so i know it can be improved.

the microtech and tuning time is what makes mpg.

Hecubus84 09-11-10 10:32 AM

I get a solid 21 with the cruise set at 70. Car has a jspec TII engine with a walbro 255, FCD, RB 3in Dp, Borla Cat back, and a custom tid.

MadScience_7 09-11-10 05:12 PM

I almost always average out right around 20. Moderately modified S4 n/a.
