more tie rod questions. crush washer?

yup, searched. I don't have a lot of time because I work for a living so just answer my question please instead of just posting "SEARCH". getting sick of that.

I read through 2 or 3 write ups for our tie rods (inner and outer). someone mentioned something about unbending a washer and needing a new one but no pic and my tie rod set did not come with this washer. what is it? just a regular washer that you bend or something special? I think it was referred to as a crush washer. my parts stores don't know a thing so I'm not asking there. it might just be some generic washer, i don't know. I'm waiting on my new steering rack boots and then this is finally happening, been putting it off (lack of time, too much to do).

The FSM does not show any such special washer.
This thread has an excellent pic.

Maybe they were referring to a cotter pin?

No, I recently saw a thread (not sure if it was here or Nopistons) where the guy talked about a washer between the inner tie rod and the rack, the washer being folded over as a locking device.

I've depowered three racks and never seen such a thing and the FSM doesn't show it either.

I've never ventured into that territory so it is just guessing.
I'm a remove and replace kind of Guy..lately my Old Guy Patience says "get it off,put new back on and be done with it!".

Yeah, there's something to be said for that.

"Old guy", pssht.

ya, I read through that link as well before I posted. the tie rod should stay in just fine without such a device I take it? the little key on the steering rack that you push in pretty much keeps the inner rod from working its way out (pic in that link of fsm).

https://www.rx7club.com/suspension-wheels-tires-brakes-20/tie-rod-removal-installation-336708/ thats the link I was reading. I just noticed now that he never specified what chassis he was asking about although the OP does have an FC in his avatar. I don't know, the washer apparently goes in between the inner tie rod and the steering rack. I read the FC archive thread for tie rod replacement (w pics) and it did not mention this washer either. I am guessing I might have been confused and they were talking an FD or FB. it was in the suspension and steering section so that didn't lead to any generation info. didn't realize any of that till just now.

FBs don't have steering racks, so it wasn't that.

FC_fan 07-03-12 09:22 AM

^idk, not an fb guy. so the point is, I won't need these washers right? I have inner and outer tie rods, and will re use my castle nut as I didn't get new ones. only thing I should need is new cotter pins. and I will try my best to be really careful with my steering rack boots as I need to re use them. those are more expensive then what I paid for my cheapie tie rod kit lol.

clokker 07-03-12 09:30 AM

No, you do need those mythical washers.

FC_fan 07-03-12 10:28 AM

mythical, lol.
