Mod my hood?

So i have a spare hood for my 88 vert and was considering trying to modify a scoop or something similar.. i was gonna try and find a used sti hood scoop but think it might be a little much and not really functional. So i was curious if anyone has modified there stock hood at all and if anyone has pics that would be cool!

oinesra 01-04-11 09:21 PM

Here are some of a naca duct I did.

I had to vent my hood because my intercooler and radiator are now v-mounted. I searched all across the place for a decent option, but have you tried searching for "hood vent" or "hood scoop"? All you get is a bunch of ridiculous crap. Giant scoops, ricer non-functional scoops, screw-on louvres, etc. A NACA duct is easy to find, but wouldn't have done me any good since I need air to go out, not in. One day I saw an Evo VII sitting outside work so I took some measurements while he wasn't looking :D

This was the "in progress" picture. I've finished it up now, with the exception of priming and painting the underside, since cutting the steel hood will cause it to rust in those bare spots. Let me tell you though, what a pain in the ass this was. There are 3 layers to go through, and 2 of them are glued together.

i always wondered what the evo scoop would look like in there, any more photos?

I can, give me a minute. I haven't installed it yet, but this is what it's going on. Just imagine a turbo there, it's getting a rebuild. :)

Still not done. I have a little tweaking to get the vent to lay flat. I just hope it's in an area of low enough pressure to vent air out.

Rob XX 7 01-05-11 03:48 PM

i wash the shit out of my car, did the evo come with some kind of rain gutter system?

AGreen 01-05-11 03:50 PM

Yeah, but i couldn't get the guy to sell me that part. It looks like louvres or something.

I would suggest selling your extra hood (or both hoods) and getting a TII, or an aftermarket hood. I have yet to see a "customized OEM" hood that is as nice looking.

People will be quick to dislike due to being on drift cars.
Should perform better then that EVO stuff posted above since it has that angle in front of it.

I dont care how sideways a car is going or how JDM it is, I just dont like that look on the hood, looks like someone took some flat stock and made some shit that has no flow to it, just awful looking and you said it yourself it looks like a locker

TitaniumTT 01-07-11 05:03 PM

Yeah, there is nothing sexy about those "sexy style" hoods. There are no curves, no subtle features just this angular in your face grotesque vent.... did I mention the vent looks like shit?

that lip and headlights are home made. right now i'm working on a fiberglass center console and i cut the top half off my spoiler and making a new top. (less bulky and more down force)

That's because they start working with the 'glass and realize they're in over their head and drop the whole project. How many people have said they're going to swap in an FD dash?

I doubt it, for now it'll just be a stockish ported rebuild, RX8 seats, newer interior, full block -> bumper custom exhaust and a nice stereo. 'Vert's really not for me.... b-day present for my mother.

Yep TT damn nice looking hood.

Rob XX 7 01-08-11 12:12 PM

I never realized you did that in alum, I thought it was glass!

That guy still has the atilla hood

AGreen 01-08-11 12:36 PM

I don't see many things on this forum that I want to copy, but you did a great job on that hood TT. I did the evo vent on mine as a quick and dirty fix, but this may have to be the next step. Only in steel, as I don't have the ability to weld aluminum yet.

I'm sure the gussets on that hood will offer some structural support, so all the webbing underneath can get cut out too. That way, it'll only be 10x as heavy, not 100x :)

You'll want to leave as much support as possible, trust me.

I thought about doing it in glass, but figured it would be easier for me to shape it in AL.

If we're talking about the same guy, I bought it back in July... it's sitting on the vert right now, just waiting.

never painted? Jon?

LunchboxCritter 01-08-11 03:29 PM

TitaniumTT your hood does look good. I would bet it's beyond most people's capability to do that.

How many hours do you have invested in that? I would bet that if you charged yourself $15-$20/hr for the labor, materials, etc. it cost more than an aftermarket hood, but less than a custom "one off" hood.

TitaniumTT 01-08-11 03:49 PM

Thanks. Probably 30-40 hrs all total including paint. Materials cost maybe $20 plus all the paint and bodywork stuff. And I don't charge $15-20/hr. I bill out @ $50-$75 usually.

Saving coin wasn't the point. The point was to have a functional hood which is what I have. It's ducted strait to the intercooler. I never had a problem with AIT's, so flow through the core wasn't an issue. It was heatsoaking when I'd sit waiting for an auto-x to start. The hood helps with that better than any of the aftermkt hoods that i've ever seen.

Now, if someone wants to pull a mold off of it.... then it could be reproduced much cheaper than a one off.

bewst12psi 01-08-11 04:30 PM

Wow I didn't realize TT's hood was aluminum either... Very nice!

The quick hood I did for my v mount is steel... Next hood will be a CF razor style with aluminum ducting.... Here's the Steel one.

Sorry for never returning to my post. Dont have computer access too often right now. TT's hood is beautiful but out of my fabricating abilities.. The evo hood scoop looks good and within my skill range..
