Sun shades are your friend.

does it get hot at all from the shifter?

Ice_Wolf Jun 16, 2005 02:39 AM

Honestly, I don't think I'd ever change out the stock shift knob. It's the best shift knob I've ever had in any car, it's really comfortable to shift with, and you can throw it around pretty quick when shifting fast.

jono20 Jun 16, 2005 02:46 AM

yup I have my stock one too!

Impreza2RX7 Jun 16, 2005 04:07 AM

Nope, I hate the stock shift knob, it sits nearly 1" higher than my Momo knob and the shift throw is longer with it compared to my Momo Airleather. As soon as I can get a Shortshifter that shifts like my WRX with a Shorthshifter, Ill be happy :)

jhammons01 Jun 16, 2005 10:32 AM

Well nobody is mentioning that if you have your Cat removed the heat transfer is much less.

I have the same one. Gets hot from the sun, but not from driving. I need to throw a sock or something over it. My stock steering wheel gets just as hot, so use that as a reference if you're worried about it.

JamesBong Jun 16, 2005 10:49 AM

OK, so since we're on the subject, Is M12X1.25 the correct thread pitch for an S4 shifter?

Tournapart Jun 16, 2005 11:33 AM

LED Lights + FC = RICE

X-JaVeN-X Jun 16, 2005 12:19 PM

omg...you guys sound like my wife! "your shift knob is too hot!" , "Your shift knob is too cold!" Yes they get hot, and they get cold...big deal...they cool off/warm up in a few minutes. Toughen up a little

I believe that's the thread size of shifters in FD/S5/Miata (and many other cars). S4 should be M12x1.5 (which I could not find anything on the internet that has the same size, couldn't even find any knobs that would fit). I had to drill and tap my voodoo knob to fit my S4 shifter, not a big deal.

well, damn. that's the one size that voodoo dosn't have. Guess it's tap and drill time.

fc3sfreek Jun 16, 2005 01:01 PM

I have my stock shifter and it's still like brand new, Hate the S4 steering wheel though..

BoostedRex Jun 16, 2005 02:16 PM

When you buy the Mazdaspeed short throw kit, what thread size do you need then? I figure it's probably different than the stock S4 thread and pitch. Thanks in advance guys.

What you crazy man?!?!

No really, I have the stocker too, just haven't found anything that screms out to me, and the stock one works damn well. MAybe if I was using the car as a track car/DD then maybe I'd have a shorty. But for the day to day, I don't want to have to force the thing around.

I wonder if my tranny is about to blow, or something else? cause it gets so damn hot , just from driving. In about 20-30 minutes of stop and go the damn car is cooking. And I don't redline it every gear either( actually have never redlined it in every gear) The whole center console cooks, and it's not just because of the Angry South Florida sun. I know that black leather gets damn hot in the sun, but as someone else said before, that's what sun shades are for!( and If there's space to keep one in a vert, then there's space in all the 7's for one!) There is a noticible difference from sun hot and tranny cooking hot. The tranny heat comes up and through everything, you can feel it all around the center console. If you feel the boot, or anything right next to it, it's damn hot, almost too hot to touch.
But that nice Stock shifter just stays nice and warm. Not a biggie though, but I am getting my tranny flushed out next week.
Prevention is better than a Cure.

And I can't afford a new tranny now!

I have yet to find anything that beats an old school wood ball.
Easy to grip, sensitive, not too much inertia, stays cool, can be drilled to fit tight & sit low on the shift lever.

Here it is on my previous NA.
That's a short piece of heater hose covering the metal ring & set screw.

The same knob migrated to the turbo.

Tranny running hot? - switch to synthetic gear oil...

introVert Aug 30, 2005 03:32 PM

I have a stock shift knob- in my closet!

I run a metal one, and the calluses from repetetive wankeling have made me immune to the heat... :D

Sounds to me like someone is due to replace the rubber boots around their shifter. That will fix the heat coming up problem that you'r ehaving.. Fair warning though, it's like 60 or 70 bucks to get the boots!

To keep on task, I have a metal knob in the Miata, and I love it.. Once I get my Miata shift kit, then i'm going to get a metal knob for the 7.

Makenzie71 Aug 30, 2005 07:19 PM

I've had metal shifters on all my cars and never had a problem. You all must be pansies...

88IntegraLS Aug 30, 2005 07:29 PM

Metal is heavy, I use the stock S4 plastic one on a cut down stock shift rod.
