Metal shift knobs a bad idea?

I know that the shifter area usually gets decently hot, so would an all metal shift knob be a bad idea right? I was looking at the voodoo knobs but I know the heat transfer will be killer.

Stanello 06-15-05 12:03 AM

Ya, I'd think it would get pretty hot

RotaryEvolution 06-15-05 12:10 AM

yup, i could feel the metal ring below my shifter today, since it is nearing summer the damn thing was near burning my finger so i wouldn't suggest a metal shift knob...

I have a Voodoo shift knob and like it alot. It screws on and does not use set screws which caused my MOMO shift knob to come loose a couple of times. A metal shift knob will get hot/cold with the weather. It is not that bad but, it is uncomfortable till it cools down (makes you shift faster). It does not seem to heat up while driving, just from sitting in the sun.

DREYKO 06-15-05 12:35 AM

mine doesthat too its a solid steel knob and i just put a clean sock over it when i know itll be in the sun or just throw a shirt on it and it keeps it from baking, itll be about as warm as your dash, not killer, just warm.

I have a Silver aluminum Sparco knob. It was a bad idea... I have to keep a rag or something to cover it up with when I park..

ddub 06-15-05 02:00 AM

Black leather is a bad idea too! In only 70º weather when I park for long periods of time my shift knob is BURNING by the time I get back in. Same with my steering wheel -_-

i have a aluminium rotor shift knob i made in high school a while ago, it doesnt get hot from driving, but if it's in direct sunlight it can get pretty hot...now that im used to it i wouldnt consider trading it for any other shift knob

Kingsfan 06-15-05 02:13 AM

i had an aluminum shiftknob in my old integra, i had to put a glove on the damn thing cause it got so hot

Flip_FC_Drifter 06-15-05 02:18 AM

Yea, it's a bad idea, I pulled in a car at work with a metal shift knob that had been sitting in the sun a few hours. I put on a glove so I could drive it in and I could still feel the heat through the glove.

MrSparkle 06-15-05 02:19 AM

yeah mine only gets hot when it's in direct sunlight so i keep a wrist band on it in the summertime. the first time it got hot i couldn't touch the thing and had to use the shirt i was wearing.

DREYKO 06-15-05 02:21 AM

iv noticed too that the metal ones that have lights in them tend to die because the heat fries their circut board, so those are a bad idea, ive replaced em twice befor switching to solid metal

You can do like I did, take a piece of pipe that fits snugly in the MOMO shift knob, JB Weld it in the knob, and tap it to thread on the stock shifter.. Works like a charm..

37FC3S 06-15-05 02:56 PM

I thought about doing something like that to the MOMO shift knob but, decided to spend the $30 for a round Voodoo shift knob instead. The first time the MOMO came loose was while I was at a track day and on the track.

gerbraldy 06-15-05 03:00 PM

doesn't anybody like to keep the stock shift knob?

Mr. Gadget 06-15-05 03:02 PM

nope, its 15 years old and worn out in almost all cases

rx7rocket2005 06-15-05 03:30 PM

I've had 5 of them and they've all been in perfect condition every one. What do the voodoo shift knobs look like?

BlueSteel 06-15-05 03:46 PM

I watch in hilarity every time my friend burns his hand on his metal Greddy shiftknob in his 300ZX, so I'd steer clear of a metal knob. (shift knob that is, u sickos.) Course his cars black/black leather, which doesnt help heating up of the car as a whole...

Houstonderk 06-15-05 03:56 PM

Just get some racing gloves. lol

evileagle 06-15-05 06:32 PM

I bought the MazdaSpeed short shifter and I couldn't afford a knob, I run without one! It isn't bad at all. The shifters actually have rubber inside the two pieces and it helps insulate the heat pretty well so most of it doesn't even make it up to the top half of the stick.

mazda90mx6 06-15-05 06:37 PM

i have the greddy shift knob. i have been fine driving it in the summer and in the heat. it doesnt get hot at all. the only time i hated driving it was when i drove it in the winter that thing got so cold.
