Master or slave cylinder?

so im driving around today, normal, nothing special in my 89 FC vert and the clutch pedal suddenly has no pressure and goes to the floor. Great. I was able to limp it home 26 miles :hahaha: but everytime i had to stop i had to turn the car off or i couldn;t get it in gear blah blah blah.

anyways, id like some help with a diagnosis. when i push the clutch in the car squeals like a pig. there is a little bit of pressure still and the clutch BARELY operates. Im not going to pay a mechanic 240 bucks to fix it so id really appriciate it if you guys could help me diagnos it. Which break is more common?

additional info: the cutch fluid resevior was dry i later found. I added fluid to it and this did not fix it so there is a leak. Im not sure what to replace.

Sounds like the slave cyl but I would definately replace the master, slave and line all at the same time.

Check the carpet/padding under the clutch pedal. If you feel/smell clutch fluid, it is the master cylinder.

I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago. You'll need help to bleed the clutch, but it shouldn't take more than about 20-30 minutes to fix.

Good luck.

I am going through the same problem!!! Check your slave and make sure it is securely fastened to the bellhousing... Than bleed it you should be fine!! Quick fix!!!

Just hope you dont have the same random problem as mine... I changed every thing... Slave, Master, and Line then bleed and still no pressure!!!!

if there is no fluid you prolly have a leak. either master, slave or the line. if you replace those get the new steel braided line from mazdatrix, i think its like $10. however, if it squeels when its running and you try to use the clutch that sounds more like a throwout or pilot bearing to me.

Check to see that the slave cylinder isnt stuck open and jammed. The cluch fork could be jammed witch would explain fluid lose and a squill from the through out bearing. See this a lot on non rx7s but possible on one still

thanks guys. I took the master off just now, but i dont have a mazda manual or anything os im kinda stuck. I follow the clutch line untill it seems to enter the block or something. is that the slave cylinder? if so how do i take it off?

Thanks again :)

My problem is fixed, and i turned out to be the master.. Real easy to replace just two nuts under the dash on the fire wall and disconnect the line!!!

Got the part from autozone for 55 ducks...

The slave is connected to the bellhousing of the transmission and is only connected with those two top bolts and the line routed along the fire wall... Just separate where it threads to the hard line.... Easy fix!!!

Be sure to bleed well after you replace anything...
GOOD LUCK!!!

Cool, i really hope its just that and not a throwout bearing or something that i gotta open up the clutch assembly for...

thanks bullet

how would i bleed the system btw? just connect everything up except the slave to the bellhousing, have some one pump the clutch till liquid comes out and then attach the slave up??

Yeah i replaced the whole clutch assembly a couple weeks ago and it really wasnt that bad... If you have an extra hand that is!!!

Well i wish you luck... But if it does come down to changing the clutch and bearing you can see my thread... I have good pictures of the swap!!!
