which LSD best for drifting

i have a 1987 TII would it be benifical to swap out lsds for something from another car like an s5 or a GTU????also is the stock t2 lsd prone to failing???

clownracer 07-22-04 04:43 PM

btw dont mind the spelling errors its been a long day

DEZERTE 07-22-04 05:06 PM

My guess would be clutch type. But then again i have NO REAL drift experience.. best to ask J-rat, hes "da man" as some would say.
*edit* no, the stock T2 lsd (viscious coupling) is not prone to failure. (so ive heard)

Wyznewski 07-22-04 05:53 PM

S5 TIIs have the viscous coupling, S4s have clutch type. I don't know which would be better for drifting, but I just wanted to clear that up.

BDoty311 07-22-04 06:25 PM

I believe that the clutch type would be alittle more predictable, thus better for drifting.

scheistermeister 07-22-04 06:32 PM

as far as ive read the clutch type is better because with the other, if the wheel comes off the ground the lsd effect stops.

nashman69g 07-22-04 06:40 PM

go with the torsen!

scathcart 07-22-04 06:44 PM

The S4 clutch-type differential, with the friction modifier left out of the differential (just normal GL-4 gear oil, no LSD additive) will be the most effective. Noisy and rough for street use, but great for drifting.

RotaryWeaponSE7EN 07-22-04 09:41 PM

S4 clutch type.

Etrips 07-22-04 09:45 PM

depends on your style of drifting really...

RETed 07-22-04 11:50 PM

Stock clutch-type LSD die early.
Aftermarket?
It's between Cusco and OS Giken...

aftermarket i like ATS and OS Giken. and yeah, clutch type is the way to go.

heh torsen is great.

But for drift, I think the added flexibility of using a clutch type will come in handy so you can setup rates under accel/decel etc.

LOL!! Thanks!

Honestly, I just drift on the stock S4 LSD. Maybe I am not the man after all?

clownracer 07-24-04 09:19 AM

I would either replace it with an aftermarket unit (best) or rebuild it.
I highly doubt your LSD is still functioning within spec by now. :(

Aftermarket LSD would be the best but it costs $$$$.

S4 clutch type LSD works fine. torsen LSD won't last long for hard drifting.

clownracer 07-24-04 04:01 PM

know where i can purchase a rebuild kit?

anyone???

TechTrix 07-25-04 11:02 AM

mazda sells the parts, then use some shim stock and shim it up tighter. its pretty much the same for all cars with clutch type lsd's so do a web search on lsd rebuilds and it will show you how to do it.
