I never subscribed and I have no idea what keywords to use in search, so I have no idea how to find it.... This is purely "Curiosity killed the cat"

Hopefully someone knows what Im talking about, its fairly recent, maybe 6 months at least... Someone was in a pickle and was forced to move for whatever reason, maybe school... Apparently his motor popped and he wanted to know if he could rebuild it with the parts he had simply to get the car across country, or would be forced to leave/sell the car....

Well a few people ended up sending him free parts so he could get the car running. It just made me feel good to see RX7 people helping each other out. I never found out the outcome of the situation, was curious if he ever got it running/still running/still has the car?

There was no conclusion because he probably broke down shortly after he departed, was stranded in some BFE location without internet service, and is still walking/hitchhiking to his destination as we speak.

many parts can be reused, the issue in most of these cases is the level of focus and cleaning.

the majority of the engine parts can last upwards of 400k miles with everything ideal, though the sacrifice is in compression depending on the parts used.

if you have a box of side seals, you can pick through and get good measurements. the factory spec for oil seal carrier wear is also a bit extreme. corner seals without much of a notch from side seal wear are good to look for. upgrade the corner seal springs to FD springs. replace the apex seals and seal springs, or if you have low mile springs which haven't been carbon etched much then they can also be reused.

the stock 3 piece apex seals are the main exception, they have an upper limit of about 250k miles, and when they break the result is catastrophic.

if you want to follow my thread i'm building a cheapo engine for my TII in the build section, mainly with used parts that fall into the categories above, with new apex seals and resurfaced rotor housings. but even the best case scenario would be about $700 out of pocket in parts with the goopy seals and resurfacing if you had everything else already on hand, if you were to use cheaper seals and have good housings then that number can be halved.

take that all with a grain of salt, if i break an engine it's very little effort off my back to redo it all. the most time i will have vested into that engine will be the work on the rotors and the studding of the engine.

the major wear components in a rotary engine are the apex seals and rotor housings.

may take up to a week for more updates, since everything rotary related turned into a clusterfuck this week and i'm not feeling well either.

Yeah, but look where you are posting at man. Guys like us know exactly what we can and cannot get by with (and even sometimes we get surprised). The majority of the people reading would not know how to judge any of what you just said even if the parts were sitting on a table in front of them, because it is the first time they've ever seen any of it before. We have a frame of reference by which to judge, most people do not. This is why I usually just tell people what I think they need to do and why, rather than ask them what they would like to do, because they really don't have a good way to know either way.
