Last S4 TurboII Motor From Mazda Reman.

Since My motor had a destroyed rear housing and rotor I Have been searching high and low for options on either a Rebuild or a used JDM motor.

I was looking at $1,000 to $2,800 depending on having it rebuilt or a used JDM motor. There where many pros and cons about both options, but when I was up at the Mazda Dealership I asked my parts guy If mazda still does reman rotary motors.

He said yes, But only for the RX-8. The RX-7's have been discontinued. For shits and giggles I had him run the part number through mazda and it showed no warehouses having any.

He then ran it through all of the dealerships in the usa and one dealership in PA showed to have one.

A phone call later I had the motor on its way

I asked a little bit about it as i was a bit wary about a motor that’s been stuck at a dealership for so long. Anyone who works in the parts business at dealerships know if a custom ordered part comes in that someone ordered and they never pick it up the dealership is stuck with it Because Mazda won’t take it back.

Well some guy ordered it 9 years ago and then traded in the car. The dealership junked the car and was stuck with the motor.

... I purchased it at cost for $2,174.00 New bearings rotor housings and rotors. Also came with the oil pan, water pump, water housing, Front cover, front pulley, and flywheel. All wrapped up looking sexy.

When the motor came in myself and a senior Mazda tech that now works with me went over the motor to check for rust or anything that would make us return it. No problems found. Everything was brand new.

Bad. Ass.

Rob XX 7 07-21-11 05:53 AM

thats really cool, and you got a great price with no core charge as well.
I think that return address on your motor is the place that rebuilt the engines for mazda, makes you wonder if they do any private contracted work?

beefhole 07-21-11 05:56 AM

The transmission weight's 185lbs? I don't think so.

hatemy7 07-21-11 10:21 AM

Oh wow... Lovely.

arghx 07-21-11 10:25 AM

I wonder if this has an s5-style rear iron in terms of the casting thickness?

j9fd3s 07-21-11 11:17 AM

i see a used front iron, but new rotor housings, center and rear iron, flywheel, complete water pump assembly, i'd be really happy with that

pfsantos 07-21-11 11:57 AM

Very nice.

Still remember my Mazda reman from '97. All those caps and clean metal. Lovely.

edit: j9fd3s - how can you tell the front iron is used?

You can see residue from old gasket maker around the ports. But then again, that might just be some other substance on there from storage or something.

HOZZMANRX7 07-21-11 12:58 PM

I had a similar situation. There was a company in Texas that was making helicopters using an S4 TII engine. Went out of business and end up getting a crate engine as a result. Everything was new with a few bonus's - S4 rotor housings and rotors, S5 (late 91 beefy style) Irons, S5 oil injectors, OMP, OMP lines, counterweight instead of the flywheel, etc. The only thing I had to deal with was the front housing and oil pan was FB. Also was running an FB style distributor.

So easy swap out from my old block to make it whole, or so I thought. When the FB oil pan was removed, there were no mounting holes in the center iron for the motor mount mounting bracket. Robert and I sure never saw that coming. So I had to cart the engine to a machine shop and have the three holes drilled and tapped.

Regardless, even with the added machine shop cost, I still feel I got a heck of a deal paying $2000 shipped for it.

Am I missing the oil return on the front cover?? Can't see it for some reason... maybe it's the blurry pictures.

keep in mind i worked at dealerships from 97-07, so i've seen a LOT of mazda remans, we used to sell 6-8 a MONTH+ transmissions.

if you look the center and rear iron have NEW studs, and NEW freeze plugs, and such, in addition to being 100% clean.

the rotor housings also have NEW studs, and lots of shiny gasket surfaces, and paint marks and stuff.

flywheel is unrusted, and also spotless. the water pump as well, the coolant nipple is NEW, which is only available if you buy the whole assembly.

the front iron has used studs, and its a different shade of grey, they used to paint irons if they were used. also you can see where the intake gasket was last time.

j9fd3s 07-21-11 04:40 PM

oh btw, we were ordering the reman FD engines, and receiving NEW engines as recently as january, there IS a turbo engine part number, someone should try it.

its there, its just painted the same color so its hard to see with my getto camera.

I work at a honda dealer and for awhile all the reman motors we ordered for the civic si's came brand new because honda did not have enough cores yet to start rebuilding.

so some kid who blew up his motor got a brand new one while only paying reman price.

VERY interesting,, seems you guys in the US get a different middle plate to us in aus/JDM

our s4T is G, G, G ,, yours is G,Z,G

or s4 NA is E, E , E

HC LUCE 13bt ( 1988 ) is G,G,G and s4 internals and manifolds but uses the s5 rotor housing
( knock sensor location on housing as well as middle plate )

or s5T is D,G,D

seeing you have a Z plate i have never seen in the flesh connects up the dots on some questions i have always had regards you guys getting not only odd spark locations for your s4T housing ,, but minor porting differences in the standard engines

i have always ascertained that the s4 middle plate was same on s5 and better than the s6 primary port
( as you can see it is on the aus and JDM stuff )

seems for us( oz ) ,, it is but for the US it is not

yep, N370-02-200R-V0 is the part number.

we didn't try ordering those, but we were ordering FD engines, and they don't show quantity, they were taking a few weeks to show up, but we were getting brand new ones

JerryLH3 07-24-11 03:51 PM

I may look into that. The engine in my RX-7 restoration project ran okay when it was parked, but it would stink to go through all the effort to have an engine blow a couple weeks after I put it back on the road. Plus the price, if comparable to what he paid for his S4 engine, is hard to beat for just dropping it in and bolting everything back up. Especially with the chance of getting so many new parts.

j9fd3s 07-25-11 10:18 AM

i couldn't check it because mazda shuts down on the weekend, but it just says to call...

list is $2868. there is a $1000 core on the reman, but 0 on the N370-02-200R-V0

Regarding the Series 5 remans -
I got off the phone a little while ago with Ray at Malloy Mazda. He will be shipping me a S5 Turbo II reman for my turbo vert project. I ordered it two months ago and Mazda has just gotten the last of the necessary new parts from Japan. Ray said that the bulk of the parts will be new.. I will post up some picts when I get it.

Awesome! If you don't mind me asking... How much did you pay for the S5 TII reman?

swilson@assetworks.com 11-15-11 01:35 PM

have not gotten the CC charge yet but I think it will be $2600 plus $180 for shipping. The core charge is $1000 and you have to pay to ship it back.

HOZZMANRX7 11-15-11 01:39 PM

It will be interesting to see what version S5 irons you get. Betting you get the beefed up ones.
