lack of power after 4000rpm.. help
so i have a 1990 gxl.
and maybe for about the last month i'v noticed a true lack of power after about 3500 - 4000 through to redline. i had a feeling it could be my aux ports or maybe my secondary injectors. i'm just not sure. my car isnt really modded, all it has is a bonez superflow cat, hi-6 ignition box. umm ngk platnum plugs and ngk wires. and a custom cai which i made yesterday. like i said this has been happening for awhile now and when i'm driving it just takes so long to get to redline. it used to be way better. maybe its the ignition box?? anyway any help would be appreciatted |
How old is the cat? Make sure it isn't plugged up, as that'll kill your topend.
|
its only a year old. but something i forgot to mention wss that after its properly warmed up it has the right power all the way through but then after about 10 min it becomes gutless
|
Sounds like limp mode since you have an S5. This is EXACTLY what happens.
Try pulling your ECU codes, limp mode happens when the OMP goes out. |
pardon my ignorence,
what do i do to get the codes? what do i need to jump |
ok well theres no codes.. it's clear.
is it possible that the ecu doesnt realize it?? now correct me if i'm wrong but the s4 had a mechanicl omp and the s5 is electronic correct? |
thats right.
and it could be the aux ports, just check them to make sure they are free, its easy to do and you could at least eliminate that as a possibility. also check your VDI i dont kno much about s5's, but from what i have seen on other vehicles, your situation does sopund like limp mode as said before |
You will know if your car is in Limp Mode it will shudder and you cant reach WOT at ALL. It will jerk if you try to floor it and your Engine Check Light would be on.
=P i would think its your AUX Ports. |
yea my engine light isnt on and there are no codes stored.
i agree i think its the aux ports. could someone post an actual picture showing them because i cant see them. well i mean i dont want to take part of my engine apart just to test them. also where is the vdi and how do i test it? |
How To Test Your 5th and 6th Ports

Cleaning The 5th and 6th Ports

I hot this helps. |
i'v looked at that,, but i mean a real picture from someones car. i dont want to have to take off my entire intake tubing unless its ok and i dont ahve to worry about replacing a gasket...
|
you dont have to replace any gaskets?? and you dont have to take off the hole intake. just unbolt it from intake elbow (connected to tb) and then from the afm. or just unplug the afm and unbolt the whole airbox. its only like four bolts man. the snorkle just pulls out of the box, no bolts.
|
its easy, my 8 year old niece can do it
|
ok that i have done, but i cant seem to see my aux ports for some reason... thats what i was requesting a picture from.
how would i test my vdi? |
I'm working on mine now, let me go snap a pic 4 ya..

Variable Dynamic effect intake (VDI). its the Manifold
I'm new also, I got an Haynes repair manual 86-91 on page 137-139 it shows how to remove the port valves. |
i'm reading on it aswell trying to figure it out
