Knock sensor error code diagnosis?

Can someone give me a test procedure for the 89 TII knock sensor? My ECU's throwing the code (05), but the 88 FSM isn't very helpful Also, is that the control unit or sensor?

What voltages/resistances should I be looking for and where? Also, the ECU should completely retard the timing when it doesn't get a signal (or gets one out of spec), right? So I'm not going to toast my motor, eh?

TIA,
Brandon

Did you read the part in the 88 manual where you jumper the initial set jumper and then get a plastic hammer and lightly strike the front motor hoist point?????? The timing is supposed to retard when you do that. I have not idea why I have not done that myself, but have not. The only other thing I saw was 4-5 volts on pin R at idle. Go do it and tell us what happened. It wasn't very detailed in the sense it did not tell you to put a timing lite on it while you do that, or what rpm the engine should be at. Gonna have to try that tomorrow. We shall not BUMP YOU....TO THE TOP!
