Instead of using Stock Intake Gasket, can I use Silicone/RTV ?
 

ok, long story short, I bought Mazda's 86 Gasket set cuz the 89+ set is NLA.

the set comes with everything BUT couple of them don't fit S5, including the OMP and other few things.

I bought most of them but it seems that I FORGOT to get the intake gasket

(Optional : N350-20-155 )

Cuz today I was about to put the intake back but then I was like hmm ... it don't fit ... Oh SHIT !!!! I FORGOT!

funny thing is the LIM to Engine Gasket fits 100% ... but not the UIM to LIM nor the UIM to TB gasket ...

So, yeah, question is can I just use some Silicone/RTV there? don't feel like wait another week for the stupid gasket to come ... or if someone have BOTH of them (or all 3) that they can sell and can overnight using USPS to me by tomorrow that will be great too :)

You may be able to get away with it.. but personally if I were in your situation I would just buy a roll of gasket maker and cut your own.

Hah! if you live in NYC you will know NYC stealership don't stock shit ... oil? sure. oil filter? sure. you want them to stock a 20 yr old car's intake gasket? HAH! :scratch:

not to mention, NYC dealerships sell parts at ABOVE MSRP ... rofl. That's how pathetic it is.

if you're stuck go get a paper grocery bag, and use a little silicon on that. i forget who told me about that, but i guess that's what they used to do when they got stuck a long time ago

argh, not sure if I wanna try that. cuz I messed up a lot on this build (it's my first build) and I really want to follow the golden rule : "Do it right or do it twice" ...

I'm almost done putting the engine back together, just need to put the Intake manifold back on, put the tranny back and stick it back to the car as one piece. connect the speedo cable and whatever crap ...

*sigh*, if I can't get the gasket by tomorrow and finish it before Friday (meaning have just 2 days) then I will have to wait a month later ... it will probably be too cold by then ...

Honestly, this doesn't seem like that bad of an idea.

I recently put some high-temp red RTV silicone gasket maker on my BAC valve, smooshed it down a bit with wax paper, got it perfectly flattened to about 1.5mm, let it dry, slowly removed the wax paper... And voila! Perfect gasket.

I wouldn't ghetto it. Just be patient and order the correct gaskets.

Or a cereal box.

I agree... BUT the OP claims he wants it done by Friday.

Today is Tuesday. He can either use something temporary, and get it done by his requested date... Or he can order gaskets, and as he claims... "Wait a month later..."

If you are "itching" to get this done, you may be more prone to "cut corners"... You might as well order gaskets and wait.

Order them from Mazdatrix and pay extra shipping. Problem solved. He said he wants to do it right. Asking how to rig it up is NOT doing it right and will result in it being done again. Taking shortcuts when it comes to working on cars almost always ends badly.

I checked Mazdatrix earlier... They definitely have all of the gaskets he needs. He should have thought of this yesterday or last week, and ordered them immediately.

OP, why did you order a S4 gasket kit? I know you had mentioned that the S5 kit is no longer available... But Mazdatrix has all of these gaskets.

All the chain auto stores (Autozone, PepBoys, etc) sell sheets of gasket material, usually in various thicknesses.
A roll would be @$5, IIRC.

A sharp Exacto and the right size spade bit (they work amazingly well for the bolt holes) are the only necessary tools, whole thing would take 30 minutes if you are obsessive.

I have tried to make my own gaskets from that auto parts store gasket material before. They never work out all that well. Just buy the correct ones and forget any other options even exist.

I have always been taught to NEVER use rtv on intakes. First of all, it won't seal. It might for a little bit, but if your mantra is "do it right or do it twice", then you're going to shit and fall back in it if you use only rtv. I have made my own gaskets on a lot of things with good results. You only need a ball peen hammer and a set of sockets. Hold the gasket material over the manifold, use the ball peen hammer to lightly tap around the edges. The sharp edges cut the gasket to the perfect size. Mark where the holes go and then place a small 4 or 5 mm socket over where the holes will go. Hit the socket with a hammer over a hard surface... instant hole. Sure you could get a gasket punch, but this works just as well.

Even the cereal box idea will work better than RTV. Seriously, you'll run the risk of blowing that crap right out, or even worse, sucking it in. Of course it's just silicone, but I'm pretty sure that any decent person who takes pride in their work will not want a silicone booger getting inside their engine.

I was just gonna suggest this. Mazdatrix new cod policy just does not sit well with me. Plus, Ive never gotten attitude from Malloy. Bummer for mazdatrix, Ive spent at least 20k through them over the years.

I'd go with making my own. I've done it numerous times with great success. I find it hard to believe you don't have a chain store around that sells the paper...

I ordered from MMS and took the overnight shipping hit (like 36 fuxking dollars) and got the gaskets today (and couple other things)

ordered BOTH Asbestos for 91 and 92 non-ASBESTOS. Using the non-asbestos kind right now, I know it probably won't get into my lungs but it might be better to use less asbestos the better ... Saving the asbestos version in case I need them sometime in the future ...

and just about 10 mins ago I found out that I missed another gasket, which is the one for IACV ... fuxk that , I'm using RTV for that one.
