I killed my TII.
 

I broke my TII Friday night messing around with a modded WRX. I managed to pretty much explode my T/O bearing AND spring a coolant leak out the back of my engine somewhere. I haven't decided if I am going to fix it or not (ever) but I know I can't fix it this summer...damn $20K/year education. So anyway, I have two questions. First, where are the possible places for a coolant leak that would piss down the front of the transmission? Second, what kind of damage can I do by driving it with a bad T/O bearing, other than grinding when putting it in gear? I'm not driving it now, but I eventually need to bring it somewhere other than my apartment parking lot.

Hose going to the heater core (thru firewall)?

The heater core was bypassed...sorry, should have mentioned that.

the throw out bearing presses against the pressure plate and releases the pressure from the clutch so you can shift gears.

Yeah, and when it breaks, you grind going into gears and the car lunges forward when the clutch is down and it's in gear....not a lot of fun.

I drove my car with bad t/o for about a month, and it was ok for me. Just a finger was broken off mine. If yours is as thrashed as you say, it would destroy the PP pretty quick I would imagine. Man, I hope you get it fixed!!

Ha. I wouldn't even sell the turbo for that, but thanks for offering.

I'm not really worried about the PP...it would get replaced anyway...I'm just worried about my landlord getting pissed off about the car sitting there, and I don't want to keep paying for insurance on it and not driving it.

I would bet that your coolant leak is coming from that coolant hose that goes from the rear housing up into the underside of the Throttle body, and its the leaking fluid from there is running down into the bell housing.

Have you peeked around there with a flashlight and a mirror yet? If it is coming from there you will have to pull the upper intake manifold to fix it. Its not too bad, just takes a few hours if you haven't done it before.

As far as the throw-out bearing goes, fixing that isn't too horrible. The bearing is pretty cheap, but you will need a good set of jack stands, and a couple of strong friends to do the job. I replaced my clutch, bearing, and rear engine seal all by myself a couple of months ago, and it wasn't too bad. Getting the transmission to line up and go back on was the hardest part. But unless you are a 230lb moose like myself, :D I wouldn't recommend doing it alone.

Honestly, it doesn't sound that bad. The water hose is probably the one below the intercoller that runs from the block to the throttle body. Simple fix here if this is the case. You'll have to look at it to be sure...

If you screwed up in the Tranny is a T/O bearing, you're only talking $30-40 bucks in parts + Labor. Once again, you won't know until you pull it apart.

Don't get discouraged! At least not until you know what work has to be done!

I got under the car with a spotlight to look for the coolant leak but didn't think to grab a mirror. Maybe I'll get under there again, but I think my landlord will frown on me working on it in the parking lot.

Release bearings don't have fingers, pressure plates do.

it shouldn't be to bad just driving it to somewhere to work on it. you will need to try to match rpms though it will make your drive much easier. hope it works out well for ya, and thanks for the help on the attachments i think i got it down now.

I am pretty good at rev matching...hell, I killed a GS-T on my way home from breaking my car. :cool: I just don't want to damage the input shaft on the tranny or anything like that.

I'm all for shifting the thing without the clutch. You just need the clutch to get the thing rolling from stop lights. After that forget about the clutch. Its a useful skill thats going to help you out during your time of distress.

I had that same problem, coolant spewing out the back of the engine some where. There is one VERY small hose behind the intercooler, lower down, right behind what I would call the Top Intake Manifold Cover on the passanger side. It is a hose that you cannot even get to without taking that whole top intake manifold cover thingy off (have to remove intercooler too...yarg).

Easy to fix, but you need the right hose etc. etc.

I agree with Salguod, thats the only coolant hose I know of that would spew coolant down the transmission

There is a long six faced screw that sticks out from one of the bases where the engine mount goes I don't remember which side. That is the engine's coolant drain, if it came loose it might leak from there.

Its on the driver's side, but that isn't going to make it run down the bellhousing.

Bellhousing? I missed that part, dude you either broke a water seal on the rear housing or the water line...

This doesn't sound like a shattered T/O bearing. If it were, the release fork would be in direct contact with a few fingers and that won't be enough to disengage the clutch(imagine the fingers cuttin up the fork). Most likely the pilot busing went bad giving you harder shifts. In any event, you could have that fixed over the wkend for under $350 parts.

I am just going to store the car for a while until I have the money to fix it...I am in school right now and on a really tight budget. I might even sell some parts from it in the mean time.

I do have weekends free, though, so I'll probably be able to tear into it right away.

Good news for me...I found a place to store and work on my car (rotarydragon from nopistons.com is helping me out) so I should have it up and running again fairly soon.

I am going to look into that next weekend. Would it be easier to find the leak with the tranny off? I have to replace the T/O bearing anyway, so I might as well check for it then.

Ha...yeah, that works. Get this, I drove the car to work today (too hot to ride my bike) and didn't have any proble with the T/O bearing. If I didn't already have my plane ticket to NY, I'd be driving it to the BBQ this weekend.

You guys that said it was the hose coming from the rear rotor were right. I tore the car apart on Saturday (with help from Rotarydragon from the no pistons board) and found the leak...now I am just waiting on the intake gasket and such. The tranny should be going back in tonight unless we find a problem other than the T/O bearing, which I will be picking up today. We also noticed that one of the vacuum nipples on the thermal wax pellet thingy was broken off, so I am going to order that as well. Hopefully my car will thank me and not break any time soon. :)

oh come on, it can't be that hard to fix.. put it this way.. in my FB race car, I had all the following occur:

1) Heater core line popped off the engine side - Fixed, back on track 15 minutes (let it cool)
2) Gasoline return line cap broke and spewed gas all over the hot engine. Fixed 10 minutes, back on track.
3) Out of balance wheels on front and rear - Fixed, swapped wheels front to back, not as bad anymore.
4) Bent threaded rod between inner and outer tie rod - Fixed after weekend.
5) Loose wheel bearing - Fixed, back on track 15 minutes.
6) Misaligned Toe - Fixed, back on track 15 minutes.

See, you should own an FB with a TurboII motor :)

I am sorry to hear about your TII. Personally I think all modded wrx's should be taken off the road lol. I was just in an accident this friday in my best friend's modded wrx. He lost control at well over 80mph. Needless to say we flipped MANY MANY times. Those cars are the devil! lol.

Just writing that cuz its weird to see that a wrx was involved after my accident. Good luck with the car though!

He did??? I didn't even know that! As you can tell I have been away from the forum for a while. Wow well hopefully he is ok, honestly, from the severity of my accident I am just happy to be alive. I really do wish you the best of luck with your TII though. Its definitely one of my favorites!!

He is fine...and his insurance covered the car.

I got my transmission back in last night with minimal difficulty and I changed my plugs. Tonight I am going over there to put the driveshaft and exhaust back on, fill the tranny with synthetic fluid, and do an oil change. I am still waiting on some parts from Mazda, but I should have the car going again by the weekend. :)

Oh, I have to do some body work too...my rusty fender decided to let go a little bit. Now I am thinking of repainting the whole car...same color of course. :D
