I found a 86, with no sunroof.

I found this red rx7, with no engine. The thing I found very interesting is that when he sent me pics, I found out it has no sunroof, I thought all fc's except for gtus came with sunroof standard

what do you guys think?

SpeedOfLife 11-23-11 06:32 AM

86 Sport also did not have a sunroof. I always keep my eyes open for them.

87 t-66 11-23-11 06:55 AM

i dont see what the big deal is with non-sunroof fc's.

More headroom, you never have to clean/ maintain the sunroof mechanism, and no possibility of leaks or plugged up sunroof drains. The little bit of extra headroom is the best part :icon_tup:

fidelity101 11-23-11 07:16 AM

helmet/head room

reduced weight lower center of gravity

Reducing the weight at the highest point in the car yields a lower center of gravity. For Racing/AutoX etc.

Rx-7fetish 11-23-11 08:25 AM

I'm 6,1" so wish I didn't have a sunroof, and I have an 86 sport with a sunroof :-/ . I barely use it. Was a pain to get working and keep working but so long as I have it I'm gonna keep it working dang it lol.

Some of the 86 Sports did.

REAmemiya_fan 11-23-11 09:27 AM

I personally love my sunroof :) Adds a lot to the looks of the car and is great for the summer. I'm only 5'11" so the headroom is not an issue.

I would love to have an FC without a sunroof though for racing.

jerd_hambone 11-23-11 09:46 AM

I had an 89 GTU with no sunroof. I miss it.

rxmiles 11-23-11 09:48 AM

I knew about all the other benefits of not having a sunroof, but the added headroom makes it sweeter, I'm 6'4'' lol and could use a bit of clearance. this guy is selling the car for $800, I guess it's a good deal, I'm just worried about the rust, he says it has a very small spot. I paid $650 for the one I have now, it's rust free. Too bad they are getting harder to find in good shape.

rotarygod 11-23-11 11:38 AM

I've never been a fan of sunroofs. I wish my cars didn't have them. Fortunately they aren't verts. I can't stand verts! That's one RX-7 version that should have never existed.

SpeedOfLife 11-23-11 12:22 PM

Fuck sunroofs. I'd much rather have the headroom, less weight, stiffer chassis etc etc etc. I use mine, but only because I might as well since it's there. I'm gonna have to modify my whole fucking seat brackets to have headroom for racing, it's not even particularly safe for street driving because my head's so close.

Did not know you could get a sport with a sunroof, but eh, it figures that it was an option. The more you know...

i love the vert, i've had EVERY year and model of the Rx7, and the vert is my favorite. i had the top down this morning even. its a great DD.

in a coupe i don't like the sunroofs cause they never worked and now they are rusty too

beefhole 11-23-11 05:56 PM

I overcame the extra weight of my sunroof by building a more powerful car ;)

I agree the vert was my favorite.

Also, 87's, and I believe some 88's came without them.

I like the sunroof, its not hard to get it working properly. I can see the advantages of not having one either though.

I have a sunroof less s4 and a sunroof s4, the main thing I like about the sunroof-less is its a bit rare. Otherwise I'd take the sunroof model gladly over that.

I agree about the verts though. I miss having a vert.

Level Zero Motorsports 11-24-11 12:52 AM

I like the sunroof for a car i drive regularly, but for a race only platform I prefer to start with a chassis that didn't have the sunroof.

vyper28 11-25-11 01:28 AM

Slightly stiffer chassis! And no random drop of water you can't figure out where the heck it came from..

rex388 11-25-11 04:31 PM

get it

Buggy 11-25-11 05:36 PM

I had a base model '88 that had no sunroof. It must have been an option depending on what you ordered. Here in Canada a lot of the base model fc's don't have sunroofs.

_Adrenaline_ 11-26-11 11:17 PM

I have a Base Auto '91 without a sunroof.

TyFc3s 11-27-11 01:02 AM

mine is a 88 base, no options at all, and it was originally a no sun roof car... until someone put some aftermarket crap sunroof in it.... people suck...

st1llet0 11-28-11 09:08 PM

Same here, my wifes 88 has no sunroof, base model.

knifeman 11-29-11 07:43 PM

I'm 6'3" and the lack of headroom in a sunroof equipped car was a deciding factor in my decision to not buy it, despite the sweet end of year price back in '87. I bought my '87 used in '88 (no sunroof). I always thought the open top looked like hell anyway.

Riggs 11-29-11 08:51 PM

I wonder how difficult it would be to delete the sunroof and just put a non sunroof headliner in it. I can imagine the metalwork implicated, but how hard is it to find the headliner??

pyrod27 11-29-11 10:31 PM

I love my vert...the fact that it was a vert was the discerning factor in buying my car.although i miss the leg room.

Lebel 12-02-11 09:07 PM

I have an 86 base model with no sun roof as well

_Adrenaline_ 12-02-11 09:28 PM

So i have yet to see any other s5's without sunroof, i always see the s4's without them.

Anyone?

mxrider914 12-02-11 09:29 PM

I don't have a sunroof on my 87 base. Love it :)

Almost positive all S5's have sunroofs.

I can show you a picture of mine without one.

BLUE TII 12-02-11 11:57 PM

Slightly stiffer chassis! And no random drop of water you can't figure out where the heck it came from..

The sunroof car should actually have the stiffer chassis.

The non sunroof roof is a thin sheet with a flimsy support front to back to keep the roof from denting down with a careless use (like skinny model sitting on roof of car).

Then sunroof car has the sunroof tub that holds the sunroof mechanism and bolts to the actual structure of the roof which are the sidebeam extensions off of the A pillars. Now you have a truss structure of the roof above and the tub below tying in the structural members of the roof.

At 5'8" headroom with a helmet is a problem for me in an FC. A little bit in the vertical direction but mainly the side.

It is also nice to drop 35lbs off the highest point in the car.

not all, although its probably 90%. the GTUs's are sunroofless, and i've seen a few random base models too, usually automatic for some reason.

Rx-7fetish 12-03-11 03:00 PM

I thought the GTUs was an s4 left over they just slapped s5 parts and exterior body on?
