Hybrid Turbo Build Help
Hey Guys, I've finally resurrected my old project and need to figure out my turbo situation. I've been reading as much as I could for information on building a hybrid turbo.
I've been referencing this thread and this great video. I think I have a basic understanding but I'm not positive on the parts I'm trying to but that they will work. So I will be using a stock S4 turbo that I will be porting the wastegate. I will be getting a Hitachi Ht18 rebuild kit from gpopshop.com and I plan on getting this balanced. So now I'm looking on eBay for a t04b turbo donor and found this on eBay It comes with a t04b compressor housing, back plate, and V trim/63 trim compressor wheel. This was the best option I could find for t04b. The other route I was thinking was getting a 50 trim t04e. I wasn't sure if that would be a better option or if I would run into more issues with it fitting with the LIM or if the internals would even be correct. I guess my main questions are will this build work as in do I have all the correct parts I need. I've been seeing that you need an encapsulated carbon seal but this doesn't say what fits the backing. Would the one from the rebuild kit fit this? I'm also running a stock motor with a front mount and a 1.5 Rtek. Would a 63 trim be too big or an issue with this setup? Sorry for rambling and thanks for any information in advance. |
ive got a v trim To4 wheel in an otherwise stock S4 turbo, with a big front mount and lag didn't change much at all.
mine is a V trim wheel in a bored out stock housing, so the only part that isn't stock on mine is the wheel. |
I would definitely consider swapping just the compressor wheel. It just seemed like it might be more work and money finding a shop to machine the housing.

really though a turbo is a pretty simple thing, there isn't much to it. it was easier than fixing the wiper switch |
Why not go BNR?

Sorry for rambling and thanks for any information in advance. The V-trim wheel is fine for spool and can get into the 300's with supporting mods. Going to the T04e is overkill on the stock ecu and 550's. Also, the stock wastegate actuator doesn't fit the t04 compressor housing, so you'll need to modify it or get an aftermarket one. |
A back cut made to the stock turbine would help with boost creep as well as porting the wastegate. You will find that even with the above done creep will happen causing a potential lean condition. I would recommend the turbine being upgraded to the TA34 wheel, which is reverse threaded, decreases some pressure issues caused by the old turbine, and have stock like response due to not going back cut on the stock turbine wheel. I ran similar to what your wanting to make except I have the “U” trim wheel. Part number for the TA34 turbine wheel is 451314-0002 and measures 64mm inducer 53.5mm exducer. It’s a drop in upgrade that doesn’t require any machining of your turbine housing. I sourced my t3/t4 rebuild kit from a local turbo shop, and that included the dynamic seal. At this point I would recommend a rebuild of your chra, and full balance of the turbine/compressor wheel prior to use. Rebuilding them is easy there are a few write ups on here as well as YouTube vids for days covering it. I did not go the machined stock compressor housing route due removing to much structural integrity of the compressor housing for my taste. So a T04b25 housing was sourced as well at minimal cost. Dyno results where 297whp at 6200ish rpm with ridiculous inlet air temps due to the stock top mount. Your biggest enemy will be boost creep with the hybrids, but it can be lessened to a degree with the above mods.

Coming from someone that's done a T04E hybrid, unless you have the time/expertise to spare. Be all end all solution to the boost creep situation is to have a very competent welder weld an external wastegate onto the turbine housing, like above. |

Thanks guys for all the responses. I have made a decision as far as parts. I purchased the t04b v trim compressor wheel housing and backing plate. I got a t3/t4 rebuild kit with a dynamic seal from gpop. I do plan on rebuilding the full turbo and sending it out to get balanced.
As for the wastegate up to now I was planning on just porting the stock wastegate but may have to reconsider. Where I'm located I don't need to pass any visual so I guess that allows me to go any route. |

i'm not sure why mine doesn't creep, but it doesn't creep. i have a cat, and big FMIC. with the boost control disconnected it hits 5.68psi around 3000rpm, and will hold it up to 7k.

Yikes, left out a good portion of my sentence in my earlier post lol. I meant to say I don’t recommend doing a T04E unless you have the time/means.
moot point since you’ve already gone T04E anyway. you can always recirculate the dump tube back into the exhaust pre cat if you have one and pass inspection that way. I ran ported stock wastegate before as well but was very unsure about its capabilities to prevent boost creep. This was already with a bigger valve installed. |
I went with a t04b which is a smaller housing so I won't have fitment issues like I read there was with a to4e.
