How To Retune RX-7? Where To Go?

has anyone got their 7 retuned? How does it work? where did you get it done

I really need to get mine tuned up, only problem is, I doubt anywhere around here will do it for me :(

Aaron Cake 05-29-07 09:17 AM

There's basically nothing useful you can do to the stock ECU. To tune the car, you must install some sort of piggyback controller or full standalone. Piggybacks start at about $300 and give you basic fuel control. Standalones start at about $1000 but give you complete control.

If it is N/A and you are running a mostly stock intake/FI system a piggy back is by far the most bang for your buck.

ziplock 05-29-07 09:29 AM

what about a laptop with FCtune with the stock ecu?

It's not that much if you get a megasquirt. :)

If you get a standalone, dont expect to put it in and have the car driveable in a day or two though. Ideally you would want to make a whole new wiring harness.

Aaron Cake 05-29-07 10:12 AM

I never include the Megasquirt when discussing standalones with newbies. The 'Squirt is more of a hobby ECU...

speed_monkey 05-29-07 10:19 AM

Yeah, it took some fiddling and a few calls to ken to get mine working right. :p
I dont have any experience with other standalones, so I just thought they were all like that? lol

What about RTek 2.0? Seems to me that it is a good all around deal.

TetsuKatana 05-29-07 12:34 PM

What would be a good piggyback system? I can't afford a full standalone, but a piggyback seems like something I could look into. I don't plan on modding it more than a full Racing Beat exhaust (and the FCD and all the fuel parts to make that work), a FMIC, and maybe a couple other things.

Would a piggyback suit my needs?

speed_monkey 05-29-07 12:38 PM

You could get by with a piggy back, it is a compromise but people do it. A few local people are running a RTEK and they seem alright. Also, I am pretty with a RTEK you dont need a FCD.

TetsuKatana- where in texas are you?

I just can't afford a full standalone. The exhaust alone is gonna kick my wallet's ass, and I'm not modding it more than that anyway. 300 horsepower is about my goal.

speed_monkey 05-29-07 12:41 PM

300 at the wheels? Not going to happen on the stock turbo. A BNR stage 1 or 2 would do you good though.

The RTek is a nice, cheap option.

Well then, what kind of power can I expect with a fully upgraded fuel system, FMIC, and Racing Beat turbo-back? I mean, I can't afford a standalone so I sure as hell can't afford a new turbo. And I don't necessarily mean at the wheels, just about 100 horsepower over stock.

And it doesn't appear that they have an RTEK for an S5 TII?
