Angry How to remove top nut on rear strut?

I tried breaking the nut loose while it was in the car... didnt work... nut just spun the shaft...

Tried breaking the nut loose with the strut out of the car and the spring still expanded... no luck... same deal with the shaft spinning..

Same when the spring is compressed...

Tried putting some vicegrips on the notch on top of the shaft.... no luck... and now that is chewed to ****.

I've tried searching, but didnt see any real solutions....

So if anyone knows how to take the rear strut assembly apart and break that top nut loose please let me know.

I might just end up grinding the bolt off... but id rather not have to if at all possible

Well, I have always just used Vice grips on the shaft and distroyed the strut... I supposed you could also disassmble the insert out and replace everything up top.

impact wrench does it. i couldn't do it with constant pressure so i took it to a shop and had them use an impact wrench on it. works like a charm.

Yep, I used an impact gun when I did mine, and it came right off. Dont try holding the strut with anything, it wont work and youlljust destroy it. If you dont have an impact gun, just take it to a shop and ask them to do it for you, they probably wont charge you anything for the 30 seconds it will take them.

Well I didn't have an impact gun so I removed the whole assembly and took it down to Pep Boys. $40 and they reassmbled them with my new RB Springs and AGX's.

sliced the bolt along the flat side of the shaft... and then hit it with a hammer to loosen it up... bolt came right off... came in handy again when i tightened it... nice place for the vice grip to grab on to without breaking the threads
