How much should I offer for this 88 GTU?
Hey guys. I'm new to second gens, but I might be getting an 88 GTU. Here it is: http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/v...or=&cardist=23 . How much do you think it's worth? I'm going to check it out next weekend. Thanks a lot.

if you cant drive the car or see it in view and all you go buy is talk then watch out because you might be talking to a car dealership. Ive seen this happen never offer anything because your offer might be higher than the asking price

It's probably worth close to $3K.
Hehehe, flawless interior eh? I don't believe it. Look for broken/missing demister grilles, cracked stereo bezel, leather shift boot separating from its base, scratched warning light surround, discolored ashtray lid, and crushed seat bolsters. Not that any of that really makes much difference, but I doubt that the word "flawless" is used according to its dictionary definition. well I thought you where dealing through internet.Let the owner decide on the price then you decide if its to high or not and if theres any problems would the owner be reasonable on lowering the price towards maintance

I got my 88 GTU for $2000, with various exterior blemishes, but it turned out good. I prolly paid too much, but who cares its an rx7. :)
My interior is ALMOST flawless, haha cept for one small crack in the dash :( HEs right, almost $3000. |

Depends on how cherry it is and how "proud" of the car the owner is. If he is the original owner, expect to pay more. The question is, what is the car worth to /you/? I paid extra to have an extremely low mileage car...which I would say the above GTU qualifies for as well...given it's vintage. It depends on the market you're in...if every FC you've looked at for the past 3 months have been rusted out crap...and this one is extremely nice...step up and pay the extra. You can never recreate a low mileage car...low miles is low miles...that's why a car's value is based on mileage or how "used up" it is. Kevin 1989 GTUs "I paid what she was asking..." |
I'd say $3000 is the most that the car is worth... don't get me wrong, it's an awesome model, in fact the best N/A model of all FCs, but it's not worth what he's charging.

wasn't there a guy on the forum that just sold his t2 for like 8500 bucks...the car is worth what people will pay :D. Kevin's right about that heheh. If the car is as nice as it sounds and the owner knows what he has...that person isn't going to let it go for 3k. 4600 seems high to me thought...maybe 4k at the most?

If its totally mint inside/out, I would pay no more than $3500. Thats absolutely low miles. I paid $2700 for my mint condition SE. Only 70K on the odometer. But its an SE, pretty much the lowest model for that year.

I paid 4300 bucks for my 88 GTU with 88k miles on it in the same flawless condition as what this car seems to be in. The owner that I bought it from took diapers to wax it every weekend. I bought it from a guy in Lansing Michigan and all the northerners on the board here will agree with me when I say that a car without rust on it in the great white north is worth at least a grand more than ....say....a rust free car in Florida. If it is as cherry as the owner makes it out to be I say offer him 4k and he will take it.
-Lee PS- Everybody knows that you advertise 500-1000 bucks more than what you want for a car and expect to be talked down. Keep that in mind. And bring up EVERY blemish to him as you look the car over....de mister grills, cracked radio surround, faded bumper, wiper switch problems. Just mention everything that you notice while looking it over....it goes a long way to de-valueing a car in the eyes of it's owner and saves you haggling time in the end. |
Yup, I tried talking the previous owner to take off $500 but I managed to get him to take off $300. He was asking $3K at first. Also a good idea is if you buy it, have the seller mark out the sales prices something like $1100-1400 or whatever. You can avoid hefty taxes from the state.
