How to drive a rx7?

How do you guys preciously drive your rx7? on NA and turbo. I always try to shift between 3 and 4k? I want to know what I else I can do to drive my rx7 safe. Any help? Thanks.

Bunchies 09-18-06 12:21 AM

i shift at 2500rpm :p

snowball 09-18-06 12:27 AM

i shift at 2500-3k.... or 7k depends how im driving.

chilling 09-18-06 12:32 AM

normal driving 3500-4000
racing around 7000-8000

Naegleria_Fowleri 09-18-06 12:37 AM

I shift between 2.5 and 3 around town and what have you. If I am hitting some winding country roads, its not uncommon to hear my car screaming at 7 grand around them, though. That hasn't been happening all that much lately, though.

sintri 09-18-06 12:49 AM

2800-6800, depends on the conditions, sometimes do 1500 if I'm not in much of a hurry, only problem is my powerband, need to get a turbo, porting does little to help low-end power. Haven't been hitting the beep lately.

trainwreck517 09-18-06 01:18 AM

Just don't crash and you should be good. :)
Shifting anything under 3.5K is good for fuel economy. Have good tires, good brakes, change oil frequently, etc.

toastiepenguin 09-18-06 02:35 AM

Daily driving:

Shift at 3k when cold till the motor is warmed up. Then i shift below 3800rpm for good fuel economy (so the secondary injectors do not come on, cruising at 100MPH that motor gulps down fuel)

And of course a little spirited driving once in a while never hurts.

BUT I have signs of worn oil control rings, so I don't see redline too much often.

Stanello 09-18-06 02:40 AM

Just stay ontop of maintainence and don't hit anything.

raptor22 09-18-06 03:06 AM

as fast as possible :D

jono20 09-18-06 03:08 AM

I shift at 3 usually. sometimes lower, sometimes higher. although shifting at 3k with half or 3/4 pedal gets you goin pretty quick!

TalkSick 09-18-06 09:55 AM

its all about fuel economy and police presence....

if i am tryin to save coin on fuel.. shift below 3500

if i see a cop anywhere near i shift below 2500.. it makes my car look an sound like a complete piece of garbage an draws very little unwanted attention.. that lugging noisy thing cant possibly be an issue

otherwise, its just no fun to drive unless u hear that redline buzzer go off every so often

KhanArtisT 09-18-06 01:40 PM

I don't really try to get good gas mileage... Usually 4-5k daily normal driving. Spirited driving obviously 6-8k.

jeremy 09-18-06 01:51 PM

if something gets in front of you, turn the wheel or push the middle pedal.

willub and company 09-18-06 02:07 PM

2500 rpm on my fd around town.

lol that actually made me "lol. maybe because i drive the same way.

for daily anywhere between 2500 and 4000, with an occational redline every couple of days to keep atkins away.

in my more spirited driving, i tend to keep the car a bit more sideways around corners haha.

dubulup 09-18-06 03:30 PM

I find 3700-3800 gets the best MPG, and 8000 gets the worst.

I find 3700-3800 is boring to drive around, and 8000 is the best.

your profile saids you dont have a car?

Madrx7racer 09-18-06 04:51 PM

turn it on...............let RPMs rise to 3K automatically tap the gas and it will drop to 1500K............drive off and shift below 3K until the car is fully warmed up (750 rpms steady idle and thermostat gauge at middle) ..........NO BOOSTING IN A TURBO.

Here is how things differ between people

My fiancee: continues to drive shifting at 3500RPMs with some 5K shifts (speed up to change lanes and not slow down the guy she's cutting off).........gives you around 18-20 MPG

Me: once warmed up

first gear: 4K
second gear: redline
3rd gear: redline
4th: 5K
5th: 3500-4000 Rpms ( 80-90 mph)

downshit according to situation........4th gear to change lanes and not slow down the guy i'm getting in front of.............downshift to 3rd from fifth when the asshole wants to block you and not let you in ( their slow cars don't out accelerate the 7 so I end up getting in anyways......but I hate the assholes in the fast cars who I can't get in front of so I have to slow down and screw traffic up behind me)

gets me 16-18 mpg

you have to make sure you change your oil and fluids to ensure the car can withstand the latter driving style....

On an NA once you're HOME:
turn it off when you park, disable it, lock it and hope no one fucks it up while you sleep.

On a Turbo:
drive the last 1-2 miles without boosting, nice and easy granny driving......park it and turn it off immediately....disable it, lock it, hope it's safe. You can install a turbo timer if you want but try to get it used....i can't justify the cash for something YOU can do.

Mombodogs 09-18-06 04:53 PM

12 mpg city, 24 mpg highway-6500 rpm in city, 7500 rpm highway, then hit 110-115, shift into fifth, and slow down to 100, and get great gas mileage. Been hit 4 times in just over a year of owning the car, and haven't been it but once when it got hit, and that was stopped.

LOVE THE SPEED!!!!!!!!!

PEACE THE DOG

Boostmaniac 09-18-06 04:56 PM

I shift at around 3500 when she is warming up and usually around 4 once she is.

Redline any chance I get :)

Madrx7racer 09-18-06 04:58 PM

ummm......you're nuts................I don't trust other drivers enough to speed like that..........let's not even talk about some of the roads here in the bay area.....

When the secondary injectors come on, duty is split between the primary and secondary injectors. Aka... no difference in fuel consumption.

Madrx7racer 09-18-06 05:06 PM

that's why my fiancee shifts below 3500 RPMs..........it does make a difference.............You can buy an S-AFC and lean out the mixture and get better gas but I recommed you do it when you dynotune.........have the settings for peak HP at WOT and a setting for easy driving for max fuel economy.............

Shifting below when the secondary injectors come on only makes a difference because you're shifting at a lower rpm.

bacek 09-18-06 06:28 PM

13 mpg.......... spirited driving... 16 at my best... lol

i guess i like to drive my car

Mechanic 09-18-06 09:18 PM

on regular driving i tend to shift at about... 4k at first, 4.5k in second, 5k at third, 4.5k again at fourth and crusie at about 80-90mph in 5th. (this already beats most ricers trying to go at it hard.)

MPG driving i tend to shift at just about 3k or lower in every gear if situation suits it.

GPM driving i shift at 7.5k for first, 7.5k at second, 8k at third, 7k at fourth and then it land at about,... i think... somewhere at 5-6k in 5th lol i never look when im pass 100mph. its just dangerous, because assholes just figure they cut infront of u at that point, with no traffic infront or around them.

best i get is about i would say... (hopefully) 15mpg

and worse would be my personal record shattering 4 mpg (with the holley, i run a mikuni now, i get anywhere from 15mpg to 10 mpg, no less but possibly more).

but thats what happen when u run a carb.

Street_Knight 09-18-06 11:59 PM

3-3.5k most of the time.........................................

7k ATLEAST once every other day..............................

Flem-Ball 09-19-06 12:25 AM

around the 3-4k mark when driving normally. Redline at other times.

Node 09-19-06 12:32 AM

9500rpm

ericgrau 09-20-06 12:02 AM

My shift light still works. The shift light is there purely for fuel economy. It will tell me to shift between 2500-4000rpm, depending on how hard I push the throttle (harder => shift later). Under super light cruising it likes 1800rpm (after shifting), but never lower. This actually makes good sense, since low gears give better mpg than high gears under heavy throttle. Plus the 5th & 6th ports open a little before 4000rpm, so 4000rpm is a good upper limit.

As for how I actually shift... In traffic: according to shift light, or every time I'm about to ligthen the throttle (b4 shift light tells me what I already know). In open space: at redline. :)

I was hoping this thread would be about performance driving... how to take a turn, speed shift, etc.

raptor22 09-20-06 12:59 AM

When it comes to how to shift....I simply CANNOT get a smooth heel-toe in my car. Even with the aftermarket petals that the previous owner added over the stock ones, I just can't do it...and I really feel a need to use it on some turns.

Ironically, when I had a truck with crappy ergonomics I had no issues with it.

--Alex

MaczPayne 09-20-06 01:18 AM

Just keep practicing your heel-toe, and you will eventually be able to do it smoothly.

I have the stock pedals also.

CokeRx7 09-20-06 09:41 AM

Dail D:
I shift around 2500-3800 if i'm chillin.. I take it pass 4K once a day to keep the aux ports moving.. :-) (more like 5 times aday.. cuz it feels so good)
