How do YOU start your 7?
So...just curious...do you start in neutral? In gear? Does your auto-choke even work? Are lucky to even get it started?
Myself: I start in gear so my auto-idle doesnt scream at 3500 RPM. But I have a rock solid idle so pretty boring. I know a few friends who are lucky to start at all lol |
In netrual, clutch in,foot on brake. its how ive done it forever.
|
Turn the key.
The 86's didin't have a clutch switch, and I don't leave my car in gear anyways. :D |
umm push the clutch in, pull it out of gear, turn key, starts every time...
|
I start in neutral with the ebrake on and then let out of the clutch and idle. I also have a habit of using the fuel cut switch every time just in case. Now that I'm going to be premixing I'll probably have to break myself of that.
|
mine revs to the moon, with clutch in in gear on startup. idles perfect seconds later...
i was told that startin in gear stopped it from doing that, obv. not on my car lol. |
Well some 7's have cold start issues, thats the reason for ppl usually starting the car in gear, some 7's don't. With me I start in neutral with out touching the gas pedal, unless my charge light is on... I need to get that checked again, haha.
|
put in neutral, press clutch, pray, hit gas when it catches (no AWS)
|
i walk to the front of the car. Grap the lever and start cranking really hard. Once i hear it chug, i run inside step on the gas =)
|
I pull the car out of gear, clutch out ebrake on and turn key.. fires everytime
Dave |
I push it to the top of the hill, light fuse & get in & hang on!
|
I think the thread is somewhat relevant. RX-7's are notorious for being finicky and having issues starting.
|
i prayer to the rotary gods for one more good day and turn the key :)
|
I push it...Jump in..put in gear...and pop the clutch. All because I don't know what the hell is going on with this thing right now. Somebody please help me.
|
It's always out of gear and ebrake on. I turn teh key, it starts 90% of the time, sometimes, I have to do the flooded trick.
|
I do a countdown, just cause I like to pretend it's a rocket ship, then when it starts and I'm surrounded by smoke, it looks like I'm flying through the clouds.
And then other times I just clutch in, out of gear, hand brake set, glovebox open, wheel slightly cocked, seat back at a 35 degree angle, cross my fingers, and turn the key. |

There's no choke for starting the engine. The ECU has a Start Map so to speak. It does NOT use the afm etc. It looks at cranking speed, waterthermo sensor output and a 12vdc Start signal on pin 3D of the ECU. Different water temperatures mean different amounts of fuel delivered when starting. |
I turn the key...
|
I get into the car. I Crank it. I get out of the car. I pull the egi inj fuse. I get back in the car I crank it. I get out of the car. I put the egi inj fuse back in. I get back in the car. I turn key and watch all the pretty smoke come out and how loud it is (open headers--just got the engine in and ready to run, i'll be doing this tonight). :D
|
pop hood, put terminals back on connector, get in (leaving the door open of course) crank, and crank, get out pull egi fuse, get back in crank some more, get out put fuse back in, get in (close door) put my ear plugs in, put clutch to floor ebrake on out of gear and watch idle at 1000000 rpms while surrounded by white smoke, take off like a bottle rocket :)
|
I always start it in gear, saves me the AWS warmup.
|
wow so many starting issues.. I have never had any

This:https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...hmentid=212561 Injects fuel at something like 36ms when cold and 17ms when hot. Memory there. Not exact figures. |
I get in the car, push the clutch in, and turn the key. Always starts fine.
|
I sacrifice a virgin and pray to the gods of rotary....
99.9999999% of the time it's clutch in (out of gear) turn the key. Cranks up first time every time with two exceptions, both battery related. |

Cold: start and then manually rev to ~2300 for about 45 seconds, it idles fine after that (standalone: still tuning)
hot, if I need to start it, I just poke my head in the window, turn the key on and it starts up flawlessly. Mine doesn't have a clutch switch. S4TII btw |
i get into my car put key on.... flip a couple of switches...
then i walk out side with my "speed handle" ratchet with a socket that fits my crank bolt... and then i spin the engine over by hand and then it goes braappp.... brrraaaapp.... buzzz.z.z.z..z.z.z..z.z.z.z. it lives!.. and back to reality i turn on my fuel pump, turn on my electric system, unlock the steeringwheel with the key and push button starter... ok.. i dont have push button starter.... i just turn key and it starts but i do have switches for everything else. |
Haha, this thread is funny. Some of you..
I will soon hook up an autostart to my 88 manual so I can let it warm out without going out there. As long as the neutral safty switch works, the car shouldn't start while in gear. |
I use my key...
|
Yeah, the key method seems to work well. :p
Sometimes I just let it roll down the driveway and let off the clutch pedal though. |
i leave it in neutral with the e-brake on, but for safety reasons I push the clutch in and rev it immediately because she occasionally dies on startup
|
i pop the hood grab for jumper cables, pull up random car, hook up, turn over, stop get out pull fuses, turn over, get out, put fuses back in, turn over, get out, pull fuses, take out spark plugs, turn over, put back in fuses and plugs, turn over, and get out take off jumper cables and say thanks to random car driver.
situation #2= get in turn key, wait 45sec and drive off |
I get in depress the clutch, make sure shes in neutral and then turn the key 3/4 of the way to start it. My ignition colum is bad so if I turn it all the way it wont start. Then I wait till ti reads good oil pressure and the thermowax releases (idle drops) before driving off.
|
Dang what's up with everybody's FC's?...Mine starts up fine 99.9% of the time.

Hope all you guys saying this are knocking on wood directly after clicking "Submit Reply" Mine starts up when it's cold everytime, but you have to give it some gas till it's warmed up. Hopefully this will get better soon because I'm putting my BAC back on. Also, when the Rtek 2.1 update comes out...it should have ability to tune fuel @ idle....so that should help as well. Hot starts are hit and miss, sometimes it starts, and other times I gotta flip the fuel cut switch and crank it...or use the fuel cut in the rtek....but the manual switch works faster for some reason? |
|
i go to church alot
|
i walk out. put the key in turn it with the clutch in, in gear or out of gear. let it warm up. then fly away!!!!
|
i always attempt to start mine in nuetral with the clutch not released, but it doesn't start, it just floods after a second
|
it's a very complicated multi-step process
1. walk out to FC 2. unlock door and open 3. get in and strap up harness 4. apply sun-blocking device to face 5. put tranny in neutral 6. engage clutch and turn key 7. cover ears as car idles an one billon and a half rpm 8. hit switched to turn on gauges, etc... 9. turn on ipod and put headphones in earholes while waiting for car to warm up 10. ride off into the sunrise as my loud ass exhaust screams bloody murder and awakens my neighbors from dreams of sugar plums and pornstars. the end. |
Get in car.
Depress clutch Put car in neutral Turn Key Let it warm up and drive away. -30? Start it the same way. Never flooded it yet. |
