How do you drive your 7 ? What rpm(s) are you hitting daily ?

I was just wondering how everyone else drives there 7 as far as how high you all will rev it up and how often you rev that high.

I normally will take my rx7 up in the 4000-5500rpms range several times during a drive, but I dont redline my car very often (its my baby).

Just for crusing though Im normally in the 2500rpm-3500rpm range depending on the speedlimit.

Today I fixed my speedometer and went for a short cruise to test it and hit 5500rpm a couple times, then took 4th gear to 6000rpm once.

I try not to go above 5500 rpms too often because I was told by Kevin Landers (built my motor) that the engine prefers 5500rpm or less or less on my S4 na.

Whats your take on how you should drive ? I know lots of people on here say they redline several times on every drive, but I know everyones opinion is different.

Raziel 02-12-07 01:12 PM

I shift at around 4k daily and redline it once a week. When its cold i shift around 3500.

fredster102 02-12-07 02:19 PM

I usually keep it from 2300-3200 , i hit redline every once in a while , i usually leave it in 3rd until about 65-75km/h , and shift around 4-5 usualy and redline every few days

OGFC 02-12-07 02:31 PM

When i do get the chance to take her out. 1st and 2nd 3200rpms and I take it to about 5.5-6000RPMs cause im always spirited driving.

7dust 02-12-07 02:41 PM

Mines not my daily driver and I drive it just like that. :D

13btII 02-12-07 02:48 PM

4k to 4500 normal and i redline on a daily basis =)

reatrdedspleen 02-12-07 02:52 PM

man you guys are pussies! I redline my car AT LEAST once a day.. more like 10-15 times a day. When its still sorta cold (never drive on it when its too cold) i keep it under 3k.

But otherwise when im just cruisen on the freeway its like 3500rpm but ocasionaly i'll do a 4th gear redline pull.

Its good for the motor to redline every so often, it keeps carbon from building up.

Longshoe 02-12-07 03:07 PM

Normally ill try my best to keep the secondaires from firing. I do however redline it several times every time I go out to drive it.

The car is just too boring under 3k.

masao 02-12-07 04:49 PM

Well to get the best gas mileage I usually shift just below 3k. And I am poor, mainly because one of my cars is an RX7, so I usually drive like that.

But I hit 7k at least a few times a week. Keeps the motor healthy. ;)

metal 02-12-07 05:23 PM

Normal driving I usually shift between 3000 and 4500, spirited driving maybe 5000'ish, and I redline it once a day at least usually.

patman 02-12-07 05:36 PM

i generally shift at 6500-7k at least 1/3 of the time. around 5k the rest of the time. unless theres a cop around, then i shift at 1500 rpm.

Gringo Grande 02-12-07 05:41 PM

Redline 3-5 times a day. Rest of time shift around 3-3.5k

GG

Mechanic 02-12-07 05:45 PM

i usually shift at 2.7-3k for daily.. hit the redline once a day atleast....... my clutch then blew out the last time i redlined it moving... poped right at 8500 rpm.. so now I have a problem -=( lol

do i sell the car as a parts car, and pickup another one/turbo2, or do i stick with it... HMMM... ohh dear... the pain... the pain...

Dude. The clutch on our car is sooo easy to swap. If youhave someone to help who has done it before you can finish it and be driving it within an hour.

You will always regret selling an RX7. Thats just how it works with these cars. ;)

xUnKnOwNx 02-12-07 06:25 PM

wow... i need to redline my car more often. my 7 is a daily driver so i keep it around 3000 to 4000 rpm. i only redline wen i race and theres hardly ever. on what gear do you guys usually redline on? i usually doit on first and second

sounds like me

Secondmessiah 02-12-07 06:50 PM

i dont drive my seven very often (twice a week in the summer, almost never in the winter)

until its completely warmed up, i stay below 3000 rpm and off boost

when it is, i usually spool up the turbo and shift around 4000-5000, running to redline once or twice per drive

when i daily drove i always shifted below 3000 and redlined once a day

KhanArtisT 02-12-07 07:28 PM

Redline every chance I get as long as everythings running right, mainly oil. Seems to pull harder in the cold. 20k on Kevin Landers rebuild and counting...Rebuilds on these cars are fairly cheap/ easy, being NA the least it can do is take a beating, and it loves it :)

I was told by Karack you shouldnt redline 1st gear because it can mess up the 2nd gear synchros, the best gears to redline would be 2nd and 3rd gear since they are the two fastest gears, other than first gear but as i mentioned karack said it can cause your 2nd gear synchros to go bad which would make the gears grind every time you shift when they went bad and make it very hard to shift.

cdaleracer669 02-12-07 08:35 PM

i usually shift at under 3k, and redline it once its warm. its too much fun to drive and gets the same mileage no matter how easy or hard i drive it

gxlbiscuit 02-12-07 08:39 PM

when my car is road worthy its taken to 6700 countless times everyday

I dont think it will always get the same gas mileage at wot often because rotaries run very rich with stock ecu, I've read/heard they run 10:1 air/fuel ratio at wot(wide open throttle), which is very rich.

Im not sure where peak gas mileage is , or hp, but i know its in the 12.9-13.7 range or somewhere around there, im no tuner.

cdaleracer669 02-12-07 09:10 PM

if i ran the shit out of it redlining it everyday it got 22-25 mpg. i drove it like a grandma a few times and still got 22-25........ so with my experience no matter what it gets the same. now that it is turbo i am SURE that will change

i guess karack is correct. shifting to 2nd has always been the hardest gear to shift to. thanks for the great advice. i know now never to redline at 1st gear.

No problem, I learned it was bad aftetr I did it and told him about it when i was racing against a late 1960s mustang launching it at a light and i redlined it to 7500 , but I havent really redlined first gear many times at all but at least now I know its bad so I dont do it anymore either.

Im not sure where you should shift though, 6500 or 7000rpm ... karack where are you to tell us ? lol

TweakGames 02-12-07 09:36 PM

I personally drive the crap out of my car. If you're going to put a mile on the car make it a good mile. My buzzer (redline) is going off alllllll the time. Havnt had any issues. I cant complain at all. I have drivin all the cars I have had HARD.

Im not trying to brag or anything, but I think the people that are take it super easy on their cars are just being super over protective. Personally i feel my rx7 WANTS to play, and I feel sorry for it when I have a girl in the car that doesn't think it's that good of an idea.

I would have to say I redline the most in first gear either because the wheels get loose or Im just lazy and wait for the buzzer. *shrug*

I MAY be asking for a rebuild soon, but I would rather rebuild every 2 years then drive like a grandma.

SirCygnus 02-12-07 10:03 PM

i redline my car every time i shift gears BOOYEAH!!

TalkSick 02-12-07 10:05 PM

^^^ +1

i have a 87 NA an i drive it like its stolen.. redline it whenever i figure i can get away with it.. redline in 4th.. its a buzz. i have found that the harder i drive it the better it seems to run, and the more i seem to smile. i mean if u never get over 3500 how are u supposed to truely enjoy the spirit of the 7

robtechfabrications 02-12-07 10:33 PM

daily driving when im goin for mpg i usually shift around 3200...but once its warmed up i've been known to tap the red with regularity...especially if retardedspleen is around cuz you cant just drive with him...everythings a freakin race, lol.

BklynRX7 02-12-07 10:34 PM

I usually shift around 6k normally (the bitch doesnt start pulling till 5.5k) and I make sure to redline 4 or 5 times a day minimally.

How many miles on your rebuild so far ?

What do you think of the engine torque brace ? I have a front strut bar, would you still be able to install this if you have a front strut bar it looks like it attaches to the strut tower.

If it doesnt attach to the strut tower how does it install ? Do you have a pic?

TehMonkay 02-12-07 10:59 PM

I as well drove mine like i stole it. I dont regret it but so far i really fucking miss it. I'm pretty sure my issue was with the fuel though. I had alot of rust in the tank and it kept clogging the sock and the filter.

Theres probably around 9k on the rebuild atm. It definitely makes the car feel "tighter" when taking off, if that makes any sense.

Turbo II 02-12-07 11:04 PM

My Vert get's the standard everyday driving. Easy, normal, hard, abusive and a few redlines several times a week.

My Turbo gets out only a few times a month but when it does it gets the same but with alot more redlines.

tooslow7 02-13-07 01:11 AM

when trying to be nice to it i shift below 3k...but everyday i generaly redline it a fewtimes a day...but now my brakes(i think) are making an odd noise...it sounds like a tire is unbalanced..but ill have to check it out sometime(prolly this weekend because i work 2nd)im guessing its from brake tourqein in

If they are grinding like metal on metal then you probably need new brake pads , maybe new rotors as well (if the brake pedal vibrates when you hit the brakes the rotors are warped).

If anything else it could be the tires out of balance like you said, a bad alignment, or one of your tires could have a bubble in it.

+1 except its not a dd, I use it on the weekends :)

ProjectR13B 02-13-07 07:03 AM

a redline a day keeps atkins away.... but i generally redline 2 to 5 times a day, but i dont drive my 7 everyday. spirited driving, i keep it around 4500 and 6000, in neighbor hoods and stuff i will cruise in 5th at like 1500. that makes my 7 get better gas milage than my honda

DRFT211 02-13-07 10:27 AM

ive got 75k on my mazda reman and i hit 8k in it at least once a day and it still runs like a champ

dkwasherexd 02-13-07 03:37 PM

i usualy shift at 2500-3000 to keep it quiet from the cops and save gas . but when its clear I open it!! :ylsuper:

Healing 02-13-07 05:56 PM

Normal driving I'll probably shift at 3k-3.5k, before the aux. ports open.

But, that being said, I'll usually redline it every time I drive it too. That's what it was built for, right?

When I go backroad driving, the car will see much time between 5-7k rpms
