How do I replace the inner shift bushing?

I've searched and searched and can't figure out how to replace the inner shift bushing. The metal ball on the shifter is too big to slide through the bushing, and the tiny torn rubber part is too small to slide either up or down, and it looks like the shifter can come apart into two peices, the part with the ball on it, and the actual shaft itself. Anybody know how to get this apart, I've tried a vice and it didn't want to budge.

The rubber part does slide up the shaft. Just take your shift *** off if you haven't already. Then slide all the rubber pieces up off the top. After that, all you have to do is put the upper bearing on the top of the shifter ball. If the rubber pieces don't want to slide, you can put some kind of lubricant on the shifter to slide them off.

Here it is, it doesn't seem to want to go any which way, maybe it's because it's too old and hardened out too much, since it's useless anyway I'll just cut it off I guess, but the new ones just slide on from the top down? Thanks for the link!

It's already pretty wasted. I would just cut it off.

Ok, I wasn't sure if there was a trick to taking apart the shifter, or if it was supposed to slide over, I just cut it off with a knife, and I have the new one in the mail. Thanks for your help!
