Hookup up 6hp shop vac to exhaust side of turbo...

I turned in on (it had a perfect, air tight fit) and i could watch the turbo spool up, it was pretty cool, and was like wwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. And it was blowing pretty hard on the turbo outlet. I donno I just thought it was cool cuz ive never seen/heard a turbo spool.. Anyways, is there any ways that i could check for problems doing this? like check for balance and such. I dont really know how much shaftplay is too much..or how to measure the shaftplay..
I dont know, im being retarded, but i just want to make sure the turbo is in "OK" shape before i stick it in my car, then have to take it out again cuz it needs rebuilding.

But when the vac was on, the turbine looked fine and even as far as I could tell... I dont know. The FSM tells me jackshit about the turbo so i dont really know where to go for information.

Did the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you heard it spool?

HeffBoost 07-28-04 02:30 AM

I don't think that's such a smart idea with no oil supply.

fcturbo2 07-28-04 02:33 AM

neh i think it should be ok because there was no heat involved.

Haha! Thats too funny!

gnome311 07-28-04 03:29 AM

Well, I would've felt the hairs stand up if it was me.

gnome311 07-28-04 03:29 AM

The oil is not there to protect against heat. It's there to stop two metallic surfaces, one moving at very high speed, from touching each other. Which they were...

DEZERTE 07-28-04 04:56 AM

oops, i thought there was some lube in there already, oops!

SonicRaT 07-28-04 07:33 AM

For the minimal ammount of time you probably had the shop vac going, and the little heat involved, I seriously doubt any adverse affects are the result.

HAILERS 07-28-04 01:26 PM

Bronze/brass bushings for bearings....only residue oil for lube......not good. Would you spin your engine over without an oil pump just because it it wasn't hot? Sorry, I''m a smartass. I know you know better, but anyway, look at the following site. It has a faq section and a troubleshooting section plus an exploded view of a turbo http://www.majesticturbo.com/

Actually, if you plugged the outlet for the oil ....then filled the oil passage part way, then spun it over .....I think that would be cool. You've got me thinking about doing that with a trubo that's laying about in the garage....for grins.

Just an aside, but a 6 HP Shop Vac is a serious vacuum! That's 4470W, which is 37.25A from a 120V outlet. Which is also well past the maximum rating of the NEMA 5-15R, 5-20R or 5-30R outlets found in most houses and garages. Something tells me that vacuum doesn't actually make 6 HP. ;)

Craftsman Shop Vac.
6.5 hp
170mph blower.

Anyone want a video? :D

beefhole 07-28-04 02:53 PM

Is it gas powered? :D

DEZERTE 07-28-04 02:59 PM

shit, maybe its not 6hp, i might be thinking of somethign else. But it is a craftman.. Ill go check the HP later, not like it matters. BTW thanks for the link

DEZERTE 07-28-04 03:06 PM

Yeah i checked.. it sais Peak 6hp

n4ji 07-28-04 04:12 PM

Definately need a video of this. It sounds too cool to not be seen.

And this makes a 1000 posts for me. Yippee

allforjesus06 07-28-04 04:29 PM

i think the whole "# hp peak" is just marketing. it's like people buy 1000 watt amps, but they really only put out like 100 watts RMS. its all a bunch of bull.
