help me choose a clutch/flywheel combo

I'm looking for a new clutch for my 87 TII, i was at the track a few weeks ago and on one of my passes i missed 3rd and somehow went into 5th and well lets just say the car did not bog down instead it smoked the hell outta the clutch and now its shit. I'm assuming its only glazed over cause it is a ACT street/strip clutch and pressure plate with only 5K miles on it. but that's bullshit i need a clutch that wont glaze over after smoking it 1 time. i need one that's gonna hold up to 450 to 500 WHP and hard drag launches with slicks and not slip. I'm thinking of going with either the ACT extreme setup or maybe even a 6 puck. i do drive the car on the street alot so i don't want anything that's gonna drive like a 4 puck unsprung disc lol. and while I'm at it I'm thinking of going with a different flywheel. right now i have a brand new OEM flywheel. i hear the aluminum one may not be good for the power levels I'm running or for drag racing so maybe the light weight steel one? i wanna hear everyone's opinions....thanks

6puck sprung with HD plate should hold 422Ft/lbs of torque, thats what im going with, dont have any suggestions other than that. Other than going to a local shop that can make custom clutches and ask them what they think you need.

what brand r u going with?

13bturbofc 04-17-08 05:48 PM

and what about a twin plate clutch? whats the difference? are they stronger smoother or what?

I'm using an unsprung four puck from competition clutches and a 9 lbs flywheel. I like the combo. You will feel stupid the first couple of times you try to take off and kill it, but I've been streeting it for some time now and can drive smoothly with it. The thing grabs hard and revs quick.

how much whp u have?

as of right now i think im gonna go with a ACT sprung 6 puck with max extreme pressure plate and lightweight steel flywheel. what do you guys think of that setup?

SpooledupRacing 04-18-08 09:45 AM

I would go with a 6puk sprung hud spec kit and a fidanza lightweight flywheel..

thats what I am using.

From trap speeds, around 400 when i was running lower boost. Haven't run it since I did alcohol and upped the boost.

a 9lb flywheel sounds way to light

13bturbofc 04-18-08 02:47 PM

did you get the flywheel from competition clutch as well?

Nope. It is from SR Motorsports. 9.5lbs now that I went back to look at the site. As the link says, it is surprisingly streetable.

So what weight is the best for drag? Is 8-9lb to light ?

FC3S_nataku 04-28-10 03:20 PM

that 9 lb flywheel isnt that light really. at least not after you put that auto counter weight on it
