Help! Adjusting Timing And Something Is Wrong, Please Help!
1990 FC3C, N/A vert, warmed up engine, and hooked timing light to leading # 1 wire. Adjustment a little off from yellow mark, so loosened crank angle sensor and got to center yellow mark. Unhooked and went to trailing # 1 wire and I cannot see red mark anywhere for the trailer. I saw it when adjusting leading wire, but now nowhere. Still stupid, but if I keep moving crank angle sensor, how do they balance out? 105 outside so I want to finish today. Thanks!
are you sure you have it on the trailing #1 and near the coil pack?
after you set the leading and check the trailing it should be perfectly lined up with the red mark.
often times i won't even bother checking trailing unless i have a drivability issue as i have never seen one out of time, if it is then it generally means that the ECU is changing timing radically because there is another issue with a sensor or wiring.

Yeah, Im positive, double checked. I could see red and yellow mark when adjusting on leading wire, and adjusted it, but maybe the heat is getting to me, but I sware I can't see the red mark when when going to the trailing. Should I assume its correct and take it for a spin?
try switching it to the other trailing coil pack and see if does the same thing, if i remember right the coil pack marking covers can be removed and switched so someone may have set you up.
you could just take it out and see how it runs, if it lacks power then you will need to look into it further.

You da man. Switched it over and the red mark is centered as clear as day. That was easy enough. Now, dumb again, mire wires aren't switched in the wrong position, right? Thanks, going to test it here in a few, hot hot hot!
nope, the connector is a straight plugin deal. someone was probably in there messing with the coil packs and switched the covers around.
if anything, check that the wire you just had hooked up to the timing light is at the #1 trailing position (forward rotor top spark plug).

Thanks again for your quick reply, got the top down and going for a spin. Be back in 15 minutes and give you an update. Definitely gonna run better for sure, only a bit off, but we know how much SIZE does matter.

Right on Karack, she runs like a dream, glad I kept the car and junked the old lady. Again, thank you for the quick help. Got a few more small projects, hopefully won't need you, but be on the look out. Thank God for computers and you all for the RX7 Club. Life is good!
sometimes it's tough to get help but if you are patient this is a great forum. just gotta watch out for the criticism, sometimes i can dish it out pretty thick but you gotta take it with a grain of salt, it is a learning lesson from me.
One last time, thank you. And trust me, If I deserve an *** chewing feel free to give it. I'm an arragont S.O.B., who knows a lot , just ask me, so learning from someone smarter than me gets me riled up, but its worth it. One quick add on, after I change TPS, will I have to re-time again? Dog>
nope, just replace the TPS and warm up the engine and adust it as per the FSM, i'm not so familiar with the S5 TPS as i am with the S4 one otherwise i would post up the procedure.
and, i said what i said because some of us just get tired of dealing with some of the know it alls on the forum so we tend to get a bit crabby now and then and i've only really gotten to know the rotary within the last 6 months so i'm not even an old timer to this. then again i guess my mechanical experience helped me to understand it quicker than most.

Downloaded all adjustments on TPS for my car, so tomorrow will finish that and start on something new. You're pretty close to me. Im in Vallejo, just outside San Fran. Small world. Peace.
