having more and more trouble starting when cold
my na 88 runs great when it's started up but latly as it's gets colder it's harder to start and i had it die on me once a while back and again yesterday and now i can't get it started...i cleaned the sparkpugs both times it seemed to help last time but i can't get it to start this time any ideas?

haven't checked it no compression tester but i don't think it's the compression it's a newish engine

Sniff your dipstick for gas
1st. check your oil, if you got enough gas in it, low compression=no start.
If you do, change your oil. 2nd.Fill up your cold start bottle with appropriate antifreeze-water mix,90%AF rest water, as long as that system is opperative. All it does when starting is improve sealing for better compression. You'll get some white smoke when it is used. Good luck Gerrard |

Tow start it and give it a good hot run, throw at least 12oz of TCW3 premix or preferably MMO into the gas tank while doing such.

got it started needed a pull start starter may be shot and also going to buy some premix today

If the car hot starts with no problem but has trouble cold starting, it's likely a battery/charging system issue. Compression should be higher when cold and lower when hot.

You know, I have often heard & read that, but have yet to see it in the "real world" on my rotary. Care to convincingly explain why cold compression should be more than hot, considering all of our seals' main sealing forces happen to be springs?

Because when things are cold, they are compressed and when things are hot they are expanded :) When a brand new engine has hot starting problems that is the issue right there...it has enough compression to start cold, but a bit less when warm and not enough to kick over.

Lol, that's not convincing enough...Yes, heat expands the housings- but it also expands the rotors...This ain't a piston popper were talking about here, our seals are spring loaded against all of the contact surfaces, which will compensate for any abnormal thermal expansion.
I just don't see this variation in numbers when doing compression tests on mine (rebuilt 7,000 miles ago, running exclusive premix)...Maybe with the OMP on her, I don't know... |
