A GTUs (not a GTU, which is a base model from 89-90) is roughly 2-300lb lighter than a stock t2 with the same suspension and better steering(unless some 89-91 t2's had vsps like scott said).

VSPS?

I've owned a few FC's, a GXL, TurboII, Convertible, and driven a GTUs extensively (last few weeks)

They all have the same steering feel to me, but I've never tried one without power steering. (All kouki models) The GTUs does feel a lot lighter of course.

There is a big difference between weight on paper, and real life. Mike's 20B T2 is 2,800lbs. My 89 T2 with no a/c, no ps, but fully loaded (18in rims, full interior, insulation, stock seats, spare tire with a full tank of gas AND me in it was 2650. So all this talk about T2's being much heavier that GTU's is BS. Maybe on paper they are.

VSPS= vehicle speed sensing power steering, in contrast to standard engine speed (rpm) power steering. THe steering in teh GTUs, to me anyway, seems so effortless. You can take a 90* turn with your pinky on the wheel if you wanted. Some people dont like this, they say it doesnt give enough feedback, isnt natural, etc. I LOVE it, as opposed to the heavy steering of a non PS car, or the regular rpm based power steering in most others. I know that all early models either had no PS at all, or rpm PS. I know the GTUs's have VSPS(written on the PS computer under the dash). I do nt know for sure, but I am about to chek on an 89 t2 downstairs, if the s5 t2's had VSPS.
