Is this a good deal??87 tII
This guy has a 87 TII for sale . it has 148,00 miles. It had a very small electrical fire in engine area and I would guess it would cost 100.00 ( +/-) to fix...he has brand new tires (cost was 325.00) and the over all condition of the car is avg-good. He wants 600.00...what do ya think?..I know nothing about 2G Rx7's. I like 1G cars only...but.....I may jump on this car and play with it. Is it worth it?? Thanks for all you 2G'ers for your help/suggestions...I am a novice in the 2G area.......

yea man that dont sound really bad. if it all comes down to it. maybe you will have to replace the engine wiring harness. its not that bad. does the car run?

If harness is toast, a used one should be sufficient. Engine wise, if it has not been replaced, with that mileage, I would assume it would need to be refreshed shortly, and costs jump considerably. Clutch, exhaust???
After getting it running, get a compression test to determine engine quality. All in all if body/interior in good condition, sounds like a good deal. |
I will go look at this weekend, if I don't buy it ( and I proably will not, but...maybe) ...I will let you guys know about it...It has not been advertised yet ,,,the car is just sitting there...It ran fine a month ago ( so I am told) until the small fire. the guy just stored it since and I guess just wants to get rid of it. again, I am not a "2G" fan but, I like the idea of a turbo..anyway...thanks for the input and keep it coming...regards...7 fan over in the 1G forum....cjf

I would get it even if you decide you it is too big of a project for you, you could probably part it out for more that 600 bucks.

Those are fighting words. You DON'T BUY A PEFECTLY GOOD TII TO PART IT OUT D@MN IT!!! Buy a TII and drop a cheap j-spec 13bt engine in. TIIs are rare as it is, and should only be stripped if the frame is damaged beyond repair. |

Stick your add on www.thepartstrader.com and send out an e-mail to the "BIG" rx-7 e-mail list. I'm sure someone would love to build a good TII up. Especially if it just requires a little bit of wiring harness replacement/splicing and elbo grease. |

Be very wary of cars that have gone through engines fires, especially pusation damper fires.  It may not look very bad, but costs can easily get way out of hand.  If the engine wiring harness is damaged, a used one is not always a guarantee fix - these things get old and brittle, especially for Zenki models.  A *NEW* harness is in the range of $1,000 for a Zenki turbo FC.
If things like fuel injectors and oil injectors are damaged, cost escalates very rapidly for brand new units from the Mazda dealer.  You can usually by these parts used for very good prices, but I doubt you can get it running for under $100. and a good spool of wire is $25 :) You might have to splice into the existing harness and buy some used/junked connectors.
For small fires, most everything is available from the salvage yards. |

I've messed with enough used harnesses to drive anyone crazy.  Soldering is the preferred method, but "old" copper wires will NOT take solder even with copious amounts of flux.  Crimping is the other option, but even that is not a truly secure connection. -Ted |

So crimping would be the best then.
Definitly making my own harness when I restore my convertible. Just haven't decided if I want to put additional insulation (more weight) or use "naked wires" like mazda does. |
well, what are you guys saying ??? Buy it for 600.00 ?? It has new tires that cost 300.00 (+/-). If it will cost me 1000.00 or more to get it running, I would not do it. I am told it would be just the harness that would be needed. Apparently it ran fine before the fire. Can I go wrong at $600.00?? If I put 400.00 into it, I could deal with that. If more, I would then have to re-sell it asap... Buy or not to buy.....please let me know your opinion...I wish I knew more about the car but I do not...thats it....I am going to look at it saturday...anything to look for...??? thanks again to you 2G'ers.....cjf (1G'er)

just make sure none of the core engine (manifold, turbo, etc..) is melted.
