Good Cup Holder Idea?
 

I'm too lazy to go out to my car to see if this would actually fit, not sure if the shifter would get in the way of this or not, so i'm just speculating here. Anyways, with smaller head units you get the black piece of plastic under it that can easily pop out. I was thinking of maybe making a little cup holder setup out of parts from an old junkyard car to put in there. Main reason for posting this is because I wanna know if it'll fit cause i'm too lazy to go outside and check how tight of a fit it would be.

I've seen a picture of an fc with just this. So, it fits. I remember it being the kind that swings out. The owner said it was from a domestic truck or something like that.

You know where the Coin holder/Alarm led/electric mirrors are?

On my SE there is one large square in it almost perfect for holding the things. All you have to do is make it deeper so it can hold it while turning.

I saw mod that since it won't be hit by the shifter

I'm planning on making kind of a cup 'tray' right in front of the shifter, between it and the center console panel. My ash tray is not there any more, nor is the stereo surround or anything resembling the stock console . . and there is a lot of space right there now, with a nice flat base. I don't even have any holders built into it and I have been using it to set my drinks down when driving, and it works pretty well.

I think icemark has a pop out cup holder for a early 90s ford thunderbird in the extra slot below the radio.

i just picked up a cupholder that attaches to the vent above the thermostat. Its a universal peice and fits awsome. 10 bucks and looks alright too, brushed aluminum... i think made by some company called s-type or something

I make whoever is my passenger hold my drink when we go to fast food drive throughs.

damn that is very nice Icemark, did the entire assembly come out of the t-bird or just the coin and cup holders? It just looks really sturdy better than my crappy best buy head unit mounting kit.

I'm going to be using both DIN spaces for other things. Has anybody built a cupholder that pulls out from the armrest behind the shifter?

It seems like that would be a good place for it. (Make a plate that jacks up the armrest a little bit and has a cupholder which slides out if it.) Maybe even beef up that hinge a little bit, since it's so crappy.

I have gauges under my radio, so I am going to be molding cup holders to the side of the console this winter.

Damn, Icemark, you beat me to it. I just installed those cupholders from a Tauras into my car and they are great. The only problem is 3rd gear may bump them.

Can't drink and shift at the same time. And applaud this man!!!

I just went and bought some cheap plastic cup holders with the big arm thingie(i think to put it on the door?), cut the arm off and mounted it securely inside the passenger side storage compartment. Fits everything and doesn't spill, the whole way to giant size Taco Bell cups, and large BK milkshakes. :p: Need to be able to opent the compartment though, so the seat can't be the whole way back.

And what was Mazda thinking with those cup holders in the glove box? LOL

Those aren't cupholders... They are there to hold the little things of barbeque sauce you get with your nuggets. :)

My solution is I only get cups if the journey will be straight to home. Then I set the cup in the center console and try not to bump it with my elbow. If I'm on a long road trip, I only drink out of bottles that have a screw on lid.

but, that makes too much sense! :) I never figured out the fantasy with cupholders anyway :D

What wrong with going fast AND being comfortable?

Since it's a sports car, Mazda should have inculded a special cupholder that tilts with lateral and longitudinal G's.

Most manufactures did not start building in cup holders until the early '90s.

Not too many cars before that ever had cup holders. It is a fairly new thing.

My 87 blazer had no cup holders, nor did my 1993 Mitsubishi Galant.

the coin/cup combo thing came out of early 90s fords. I had two tauruses with them in it. Although my 93 tempo didnt have it. Ive seen it in t-birds too. I think we had a 93 or so SHO with it in.

My comment was mostly in jest. But did you know that German manufacturers were some of the last to start putting cupholders in their cars? They actually focus on driving in Germany and don't worry about eating, drinking, chatting on the phone, etc.

I was mostly joking as well. My '87 Buick doesn't have cupholders either.

As for the Germany/America thing, it can't simply be chalked to germans paying more attention to the road. America is a lot more spread out than Europe, that's going to make the averge drive longer and the amount of time a person spends in their car higher. Eventually you'll get thirsty.

Icemark--where did you get that silver colered surround that goes around the radio and cupholder?? That looks very clean....I like it man!! Looks like I have a new project

That is actually an old picture. The silver was a cut piece of brushed aluminum that was used just as a radio surround.

The radio is actually bolted into a stock base model's radio mounts (the 88 'vert stock radio mount, mounts the radio off to one side), and the surround is bolted to the trim panel. The Cup holder slides in after the trim panel is installed, and locks into bottom section of the factory radio mount, though the trim panel and its aluminum radio surround.

The Ford/Saab cup/coin holder, was slightly too long to fit in the dash, so I did need to trim off about a 1/4 off the back of the cup/coin trays to make it fit depth wise.

Since that picture was taken; I have covered the aluminum with some gloss black sign vinyl which (I think) matches the Logicon/climate control, and radio face much better.

At one point I was considering modernizing some of the other trim like the door handle cups, and ash tray cover to a simular brushed aluminum look (much like many new cars are coming) but decided that it just looked too ricey, and not really in the style of the car.

You can't really see it in that picture, but the buttons and lights on the radio have been changed to orange (instead of the standard Alpine Green) except for the display panel, which displays white/blue, just like the stock clock in the 87-91 models.

Very nice Mark but I would have placed the cupholder tray above the Alpine 9815 so my venti mocha wouldn't get in the way. How do you manage to adjust vol and push buttons if you had a tall drink?

Wait, that thing in the glove compartment is actually supposed to be a cupholder? I thought it might be, but on trial test of it, I figured they couldn't be THAT horrible. I mean, the floor would even be a better solution, all it does is provide a flat surface, with little bumps in it so when you stop, the drink slides, hits the "curb" and tips over. Pretty crappy cup holder. As for now, my cup holder is between my legs, or my passenger.

Maybe it is made for eating while the car is stopped.

The glove box lid cup holders are for use at the drive in movie.

We use to have drive in movies in Hawaii...no more.

Now we got a lot of late.

Going through old threads on this subject, noticed there were a few that had plans to fabricate their own cup holders, etc...

Anyone come up with something since then? Any pics of a decent cupholder setup you've rigged?

Thinking about picking up this and seeing what I can do with it..

i use one of those slide-in cupholder that fits in the gap between the passenger seat and the center tunnel. Works great, passenger doesn't complain about cupholder intruding seating/foot space (the cat hump took care of that lol), i can take it out whenever I want, and it's got a little cubbie bin between the cup holes that I can put my cell phone into!

Im used to it... i used to own a MKIII jetta... i mean, it HAD cup holders but, holy crap were they useless!

I just jam them behind the passanger seat, i lean it back, jam it in there, and go, hasn't failed me yet!

I use the center armrest.

for that question about icemarks cupholders and tall cups getting in the way. they do not set on top of it, the thing that slides out has holes in it for the cups to drop into so it would be more in the way to have the cd player under the setup

I have the same coin/cup tray as icemark in my 90 and it is a little too deep to fit right. The wire bundles from my head unit get in the way a little but I think if I trim the back edge down like mark did it should be fine. This I believe is the best solution to the cup holder problem. With a short shift and FD knob it doesn't get in the way of shifting either.
