gas sucking rotary NEED HELP!!!!!!

hi i have an 1987 rx7 with 111,000 miles on it im getting horrible gas mileage i took off the cats and no smog pump but then i stated getting 13 to 15 mpg i replaced the o2 sensor and air filter is there anything i can do to get better gas? :MissileSm

adrock3217 05-01-06 09:02 PM

Did you PLUG IN the O2 sensor? That'd cause some horrendous gas mileage :)

Try doing a full tuneup?

bradenscreed 05-01-06 09:06 PM

get a honda, welcome to the rotary

Twofer 05-01-06 09:07 PM

It's "Smiles per gallon". :D

Mombodogs 05-01-06 09:13 PM

You are getting 13-15, in a rotary masterpiece? Shit dude , I'll trade you. Driving like these grandmother vehicles should be driven, I'm lucky to get 10 mpg at 110 mph. Keep up the great gas mileage. Give me some hope!

PEACE THE MUTT

wai 05-01-06 09:23 PM

my car is more worse than yours ,I only run about 95 miles per tank .
I don't care about the gas price , because compare to Asia or Europe , our gas price
is way cheaper.
I think you should try to replace the fuel filter

Snack 05-01-06 09:25 PM

i get about 95 -110 per tank too! Yay!!!! 3 dollars a gallon :)

Tofuball 05-01-06 09:27 PM

Driving super agressively in my well tuned 'vert nets me 19MPG.

So I'll say something is wrong.

I reccomend checking your engine for codes

Then check your TPS, O2 sensor, alignment, air in the tires, leaky injectors/bad FPR, make sure your brakes arent dragging, and that your wheel bearings are healthy.

Audiofight 05-01-06 09:27 PM

I only get around 18 mpg in mine and it is almost perfectly stock, S4

If you aren't liking the low gas mileage, buy a 4-banger

New plugs and wires as well as making sure your timing is on.....fuel filter may help too

Tofuball 05-01-06 09:30 PM

Oh yeh, air filter, spark plug wires, timing, spark plugs . . .

BTW: Super nice driving nets 24 to 28mpg in our cars.

Jiffy01 05-01-06 09:39 PM

I get 20. no matter what. 230-260 miles on a tank. I guess i'll stop my bitchin about gas milage now that i see what you guys are getting. Stock s4 by the way.

rotarymarine 05-01-06 10:12 PM

I get 19 mpg with a few mods. Try sending your injectors in to get cleaned and try not to bog the motor down. I'm getting ready for a 1700 mile drive in the ol' 7 so I'm actually pretty happy with my mileage.

introVert 05-01-06 10:18 PM

I get about 200 miles before the fuel light comes on. But I use about a quart of oil every 400 miles- time for a rebuild ):

ErixHvn 05-01-06 10:19 PM

Check your IAT and water temp sensor at the neck of the filler. This link should show you where. http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1986_1988/
Just look under emissions and the cooling sections. These items are often overlooked when doing a typical tuneup but could definitely affect your ecu's inputs and consequently your mileage too. They're definitely old enough to have gone bad otherwise I don't see why you couldn't get 18-20mpg if you're not modded out. Warmer plugs can gain you a little bit too but tend to wear out faster.

wishIhadanFC 05-01-06 10:21 PM

i get about 300 a tank and i thought that was pretty bad :shocking:

ProjectR13B 05-01-06 10:25 PM

the easiest way to fix your gas problem with your rotory engine i've seen is to buy a honda insight. they get amazing gas mileage haha. or do what i do and pretend it gets good gas mileage even though i know it doesnt.

ErixHvn 05-01-06 11:29 PM

don't forget to check your ignition timing either. That would drastically affect your mileage too if it was retarded.

I get 200-220 to a tank and thats with some aggrsive driving every now and then.

WonkoTheSane 05-02-06 07:14 AM

I'm in Tofuball's area. If I'm really nice to my car (highway), I'll see 25 or a bit more, if I'm normal driving, I see about 20-22, and then about 18-19 on a tank with one autocross on it.

Biggest thing I did? Megasquirt. I have my reasons to believe that Tofuball MAY have done the same...

SolGoodGuy 05-02-06 07:38 AM

That's not too bad, my TII gets 20L/100KM city and 11L/100km highway.
That's about 11 mpg and 20 mpg respectivly.

and right now gas is $1.03 per litre... That's about 3.89 a gallon. And that's for 87 Octane! I won't tell you what 94 costs...
