The first "bad thing" to happen to your car.

For my friends car, it was the spilling of a super jumbo sized mcdonalds dring on the floor of his car, for some it might be a fender bender, for most, somthing just stops working.

anyway, i had my car for a few weeks now. i was driving home last night and i went around a turn (not aggressively) to the main road and hit somthing large and metal that was right on the road. It made a 2inch slash across my front right tire and it deflated in about 5 seconds. After i got my spare on (which too about 5 minutes cuz im so savvy ;) ) i went back to look for the metal piece that did the damage to remove it off of the face of the planet in the most poetic fashion possable. But it somehow evaded me, i couldent find it...

That was the first "bad thing" to happen to my car since i got it.

the tire is not repairable. And that really sux since i got the last race of the season this saturday. I hope i can get a new tire by then.

Whats the first thing that happend to you guys?

Josepi 09-24-02 12:41 PM

TPS was shot.

banzaitoyota 09-24-02 12:46 PM

XPLODED the tranny on a 7K upshift from 2 to 3. Tranny had 230K on it,

13bpower 09-24-02 12:53 PM

Toss up-

Passanger power window died, mush not be that bad being I haven't fixed it in a year and a half.

Tree branch flew out of a dump truck going the oppisite direction as me and took out my right side stock fog light.

NA86RULZ 09-24-02 12:59 PM

Durango or no Tranny?

Either when the transmission just died yesterday, or when my mom backed into my Rx7 in her Durango. You guys can pick.

For me, probably when my dumb ass JB welded a some ghetto sleeves in my 86 base and when the car got warmed up, it "melted" the JB Weld and sucked in the peice of ~2" square peice of sheet metal alum and distroyed the rear rotor. DOH! --slaps self--

Vroomaster 09-24-02 01:46 PM

throw out bearing.

Gotta use JB industro weld, good to 600 degrees!

vaughnc 09-24-02 02:07 PM

For me, I saw it in slow motion :D

I see an echo on the freeway jerk to one side and then a tire tred is slowly heading to my car. Nothing I could do to avoid it.

At least it was only paint damage, and on the bumper (no rusting).

DC350 09-24-02 02:08 PM

tranny explosion. From no oil!

scathcart 09-24-02 02:13 PM

First bad thing to happen to my car?
It got me for an owner.

Actually, nothing. I tore it all apart the week I bought it, and replaced anything that looked sketchy. Rebuilt the motor, etc etc.

vaughnc 09-24-02 02:20 PM

Yeah same here. Had all the stuff fixed the first week I bought mine. Running great since.

Cwaters 09-24-02 02:25 PM

I autocrossed the car on day two, no problems except for the tired ass struts and tires.
Day three though left me stranded and thanking the heavens for cell phones. Blown heater hose. You know the one right under the oil filter? The one that dies from getting slathered in dino juice? That's the one...

BoostedRotors 09-24-02 02:55 PM

Mazda put a rotary engine in it.

HeavyFoot86 09-24-02 03:01 PM

Well...there were things wrong with it when I got it :D

but the first to one to actually go bad in my possession of the car was the starter. I had to get it rebuit a month after buying the car. Since then...things have just been downhill.

I love my car!!

RXtony 09-24-02 03:04 PM

Hmmm....had to be on my 87 TII, blew rotor within first month of owning the car.

Funklord 09-24-02 03:05 PM

my heater hoses like exploding.
the first time was a big bad one with huge amounts of steam pouring out of the hood. the second time was just a little crack. needless to say i replaced all my hose lines.

13B2QuIcKNy 09-24-02 03:32 PM

that gotdamn clutch master cylinder

christi 09-24-02 03:40 PM

Hmm, I guess I can... a few things actually:

engine wise:

fuel pump - switched mine out with another 2G rx7, and it's worked fine ever since
water pump - went out 3 weeks after my first autox I did with her

A few months later (engine wise):

Thermostat - fixed it, hasn't over heated since. (Besides the problem with my (main?) cat, I just had replaced this past saturday)

Elec. wise:
Antenna - hasn't worked since I got the car; even after replacing it with a new one. Something inside is stuck, refraining it from going down when and after the car/radio has been shut off.
Power sunroof stopped working - Eventually I was able to make it work again.

Rpeck 09-24-02 03:49 PM

Blew the Automatic Tranny in my Daily driver 87 N/A it had about 190k on it. But it turned out for the better, I made it a 5 speed. So far the Motor has outlasted a tranny, 2 brake master cylinders, 5-7 batteries, 15ish sets of tires, 2 cats, and a shit load of other things ... thats reliable rotory power :D

silverrotor 09-24-02 03:59 PM

My cousin and I were In his garage, the first night I bought my FC. I was sitting In the drivers seat touching everything In sight and I popped the gas tank open cover.

It turns out he was just walking around my car and he ends up hyper extending the friggen cover. It wasn't 'til last year I replaced It when I painted my car. I got It In no less than an hour when I realized my car owns me. $$$

Damn Swede 09-24-02 04:03 PM

My second day owning it and letting it roll out my garage with the driver's door open, getting caught on the garage, and proceding to bend forwards giving myself a big dent in the fender and door.

BoostedRotors 09-24-02 04:09 PM

LOL Damnswede, I bet you cussed for days!

SkullLeader 09-24-02 04:15 PM

Lets see,
Altinator was bad, but engine was overheating that was the first thing i tryed to fix, it didn't happen and good bye engine

Xentrix 09-24-02 04:18 PM

Heatercore hose busted, stranding me 20 miles from anything.

I had my alternator die at night on the interstate too.

Scott 89t2 09-24-02 04:49 PM

The first "bad thing" to happen to your car.
it got pulled over by a cop!! :D :D :D :D

rx_7_driver 09-24-02 05:10 PM

hmmmmm......... the first thing ??? lets see
first it was cursed for life with an auto
then cursed with owners who thought rice was kool on a vert

ok the real ones now:
tranny leaks(on exhaust so it smokes when u stop), worn down needs overhaul r 5-speed swap
sister backed in to it 2nd day i had it (no damage)
3 blowouts
coolant leak
2 inch gash in exhaust (sounds like shit)
needs suspenssion work
and to top it all off its dirty!

but i still love her

shawn

NRA T2 09-24-02 06:23 PM

bastard prev. owner had a man. boost controller in the car w/no boost gauge, by the time I installed a boost gauge, and turned down the boost the apex's were chiped but now I have a street ported block w/3mm w/only 1700 mi on it

presetlimits 09-24-02 07:09 PM

engine blew after a month, got a new engine, next month the tranny went out..good ol prev. owner that ragged on it and drove it hard while it was cold and not warmed up

Aaron Cake 09-24-02 08:19 PM

The first bad thing:
-shattered both U-joints on the driveshaft

The worst thing:
-rear ended at 40 KPH, destroyed rear end, needed EXTENSIVE body work

Lastest bad thing:
-Exploded transmission on highway (110MPH, 10 PSI, 5th gear, no oil :) )

Boberino 09-24-02 08:55 PM

Year, 1990: Minnesota. (Now I'm in San Diego)

Bad news: (Blue '86 RX-7) Parked next to a parking lot pillar. Backed up and started the turn too soon. $800 in damage to the front end. Took it to a dealer. Asked for estimate on repair. Said it be "a few minutes." Walked around the parking lot and saw a silver '88 Turbo with low miles that I loved.

Good news: Went back to the dealer and told them "Don't fix the '86. Give me a good trade in on the '88 Turbo." Deal was done (got a good deal). Dealer said "we must also add cost of repair - $800.00. Reluctantly agreed - seemed fair. Put it on my American Express Card. SOMEHOW, they forget to send it through to AMX. A YEAR LATER they notice the problem. Called me. I said "let me look into my receipts. (I honestly couldn't remember if I paid them.)" In the mean time, they put the $800 on my VISA (w/o my permission) because it was on file in the parts department. When I found out I threatened to sue. They backed down. Never demanded the $800. After looking into it, realized they never got their money. I'd have given it to them if they hadn't screwed with me. The '88 is great. Still have it...

cluosborne 09-24-02 09:20 PM

Alternator failure while lost in New Jersey on a Sunday (I almost ended up in NYC when I wanted to take the NJ Turnpike in the opposite direction).

Barely enough power to run my windshield wipers and the motor. The windows were badly fogged up, and the traffic was horrible. I was lucky to find a service station that day, and my friends just a short drive away.

Got the new alternator in the next morning and was on my way.

autocrash 09-24-02 10:00 PM

Hmm... cooling system related problems: second day of driving the cooling system goes pop... next time it goes pop again... :D (lucky me) Immediately after this, I overtightened the alternator belt, leading to:

Alternator related problems: The next time I drive the car, the alternator pulley bearings decide to seize (due to the extra tension on them). The additional drag on the engine caused by this was enough to cause it to stall at idle... and then procede to not start. Not starting lead to two things:

1. Pop-up light related problems: when I couldn't determine what was wrong with the car, it kinda ended up sitting for a few weeks... during that time, a tree decided to drop gritty, sticky pollen all over the car... some of this (I assume) fell into the operating mechanism of the pop up lights, jamming them half way... and burning out the motor (again, an assumption still)

2. The pollen also may have worked its way into the intake tract... or dust, or something.... who knows, but regardless, my MAP sensor died during this time.... :(

and as if that wasn't enough, my highbeams don't work either... :(

But its ok, 'cause I still love my car! :D
Wouldn't give it up for anything... 'cept maybe a turbo... :D

Thaniel 09-25-02 11:20 AM

First thing:
About 4 months after I bought it I backed into a snowy space at my inlaws. A chunk of concrete fliped up against the door scratching it.

Worst thing:
Someone smashed the driverside fender (and then left) when parked at work.

biorotary 09-25-02 11:52 AM

bought it with a low comp engine, a leaking dampner and exhaust...

ZachSpazz 09-25-02 12:41 PM

I bought my TII last June and spent HOURS just sitting in her and looking at everything. However, one day I went to visit my friend at Pizza Hut and I backed into a pole. Nothing was damaged, except the paint had "stretch" marks where I hit it. :( No biggie...I'm doing a fresh repaint of Blaze Red this Spring. :)

Then last December I got a check engine light with a code for the OMP. I reset the codes and put some 2-Cycle oil in and proceeded to keep on driving her (she was my daily driver).

Then in January on a cold, rainy day in the middle of no-where, the motor decides to let go at 96,345 miles. I pulled over to the side of the road into the mud and I had to renew my AAA membership on the top of a hill (the reception was so bad on my cell phone). The mud from that night is still on my floormats.

I'm now $1000 away from my Pineapple. :D

kevino 03-09-03 11:20 PM

My first problem was flooding, until I learned how to control it

Z3r0 03-09-03 11:57 PM

fuel leak =(

87GXLRX7 03-10-03 02:22 AM

wheel bearing.. LOL i have been very lucky with my car.. i have own'd in for 3 years.. and so far the drivers side rear wheel bearing is all i have had to fix.

RX7_ZRO 03-10-03 03:18 AM

Let's see....first big thing....bad coolant leak...in that S-curved hose that goes from the back of the engine to the firewall (heater hose? I dont' remember)=fixed that

Has another coolant leak somewhere=can't find the damn thing

Won't start and from the looks of things, will need a re-biuld= very bad thing

Kim 03-10-03 04:40 AM

The first bad on my car happend 30 minuttes after i bought it, off for a promising start. The alternator died on the way home, I replaced it with one from an 86 mazda 2200b pick-up.

'87project_rx7 03-10-03 04:50 AM

first bad thing... paying $900 bucks for it wit money i didnt have :D

second bad thing... not taking it to DMV... stil havent
just thinking of all the fees i have to pay

some other stuff... not knowing shit about rx7s, and just buying one spur of the moment... just trying to learn as much as i can about them right now...

KNONFS 03-10-03 06:17 AM

Same car under different owners:

My father as a owner:

Enngine locked

Me as a owners:

Blew third gear completly!!

yearrgh 03-10-03 01:10 PM

Had it for 2 weeks, cat collapsed, apex seal went, bits of metal went through the turbo and destroyed that. It was pretty ugly.

13bpower 03-10-03 02:33 PM

NOW it is hitting a possum at 95 mph while driving down to sevenstock 5. The lower front end is all screwed up. 4 am, couldn't see that bugger until it was too late.

jeremy 03-10-03 02:50 PM

a chattery clutch that led to the exhaust falling apart after lowered to replace the clutch which had the struts fail at the same time that were just replaced this last weekend only to have the brakes start catching. the idle has never been right. i love my car, i love my car, i love my car. i couldn't really say one because its a steady chain reaction.

den 03-10-03 03:06 PM

Only had my TII for 3 weeks and the alternator belt snapped - it got caught in all the other pulleys and took their belts with it. caused overheating and lots of smoke and steam everywhere ! am in the middle of replacing as much worn looking stuff as i can afford right now as i do not want a repeat of that night !! :(

Ent 03-10-03 03:14 PM

Someone tried to steal it :/
