fender exit exhaust pics?

Im thinking about doing this on my 7, now that I have a DD, this will be my track/mountain run car, and although I live in GA I have no emissions, bc I register my car in FL. Yes, I know its going to be rediculously loud and spit a bit of a flame,...so before I get flamed, just want you to know that that not a concern for me. Ive had cut exhausts/sraight pipes on my other cars that were near 100db idling. My question for everyone is: do you have pictures?? Im debating between bringing them out mid fender height or at the bottom of the fender. also need to design a heat shield/surround of some sort, but gotta keep it looking good and original. any pictures that you all have would be greatly appreciated, also taking advice if theres something im not thinking about. Yes i did search, and found maybe 3 threads where its only breifly mentioned. Id like to get a collaborative thread going though on the subject

zracin 07-25-10 05:05 PM

im thinking positioning like truckosaurus;

SirCygnus 07-25-10 07:22 PM

um.... its not worth it man. it will be "omfg why did i do this" insane loud. way way way way more than 100db.

Understatement of the year.

zracin 07-25-10 08:12 PM

easy enough to undo though (ive been eyeing new fenders anyways, I'd like to try it out for a bit. Im what most would consider willing and able to try anything once. My 350Z just dumps out of a tapererd (for back pressure ) straight pipe, no cats, mufflers, resonators, or anything. It is loud enought that my Gf will not ride in the car.....ever. that doesnt bother me. And i know rotaries are significantly higher pitch, more annoying, and just plain louder, but this is only an "event" vehicle. Ultimately if i didnt like it, I could create a block off plate or a remote exhaust bypass switch, or convert back to the full exhaust setup again, only thing Id need is a new fender. I do appreciate the input though. I know what Im in for :) its gonna sound like ass,...really loud ass, but I think ill like it...for occasional and appropriate driving.

zracin 07-25-10 08:13 PM

On that note, if anyone has PICS......or ideas...please post

zracin 07-25-10 08:14 PM

SirCygnus, where are you located in ATL, whatre you driving? ill look out for ya. not too many of us around

just startn 07-25-10 08:34 PM

i ran open dp, side exit, open exhaust housing on turbo, umm pretty much anything. its really not that loud. i mean it is a little loud but these are all on turbo cars so its not quite as loud as N/A...i think N/A would be crazy loud

K-Tune 07-25-10 08:37 PM

please don't do this to your car.

Shut your whore mouth... lol

I wouldn't describe it as sounding like ass, more less super aggressive. If its a track car, why not? It'd be so badass!

There was a 13B Peripheral ported turbo starlet with a straight side exhaust that I seen dragging, I was standing about 20' away from it when he was doing a burnout and I honestly have never heard anything that loud in my life.

jjwalker 07-25-10 09:31 PM

I have straight pipes out the back on my NA and it is SUPER FUCKING LOUD. Like, window shatteringly loud. It does not however sound like ass.

A little clip. The exhaust is much louder in person, but it'll give you a sense of what the tone of the exhaust is.

Hazard15301 07-25-10 09:50 PM

Yea but I mean.... right there, basically right outside the driver's windows. I love a rotary tone, but I don't know if I could deal with it. I'd like to hear a sound clip if you do it though :D.

clokker 07-25-10 10:16 PM

Outside of being excruciatingly loud, what performance benefit do you see from this?

Catching your passengers on fire; everyone passing out from rotary fumes; pretty flames?

Because tracks have decibel limits an open exhaust rotary will shatter at idle. Side exhaust is cool, if you find a way to muffle it.

why no flames?? I thought all rotaries with open exhaust or straight pipes blew out fire balls?

Still have air injection, it burns off inside the pipe instead of outside.

zracin 07-26-10 06:55 PM

all those videos of rediculously large flames are from turbos, or really lean NAs, oh yeah, and carburated ones like that vid posted

whoa running lean shoots flames?!

Guess I'll crank the boost up a few more psi, and lean the afr's out to, lets say 15's:rolleyes:

my bad, rich, ..you know what i mean.

zracin 07-26-10 09:04 PM

at any rate...i was thinking something like this. Old pic of car the day I got it, and yes its obviously on the wrong side of the car, its just a pic that was available, but works:

+1

But if you're committed to this, put it below the trim. Above just looks tacky to me and the exhaust will all get sucked into the window.

SirCygnus 07-26-10 09:51 PM

are you content with carbon monoxide poisoning?

john ward 07-26-10 10:44 PM

I hate to say but its not a pro stock car. Its a fun underpowered na sports car. Just have fun. Throw on a nice r.b. system and love the car.
Im sorry its your car. Have fun either way.

scathcart 07-27-10 08:07 PM

Those who haven't witnessed a ported, unmuffled, open-header N/A rotary are usually hardpressed to understand the sheer volume they produce. At idle, its tolerable. Under WOT, its simply unbearable. Even with earplugs, its a volume that makes your entire body hurt. Its a sound that you feel, but its not a good feeling. The "cool" factor gets old after a few minutes and just becomes unbearable.

I suggest you try pulling the entire exhaust off at the manifold and going for a drive just to witness it, although keep in mind the stock cast-iron exhaust port does kill off a lot of noise compared to an open thin-gauge steel header.

Dude, just let him do the exhaust and have him pass out from either the exhaust fumes or the noise. He, like many people new to these cars, just don't understand without seeing it for themselves...

I would love to see a video of it running when done though.

JustJeff 07-27-10 09:36 PM

OK...here is your plan of action. You do the fender vent up high. You find a group of fine ladies standing outside smoking. You come rolling up, roll down the window and offer them a light.

If they aren't taken with your charisma, wild good looks or wit and they look at you like your an idiot. Then you take off, flooring it...WOT!!!

If nothing else you'll be remembered :icon_tup:

infinite7z 07-27-10 10:35 PM

I say use the last picture.. the one that has it under the trim piece.

jjwalker 07-27-10 11:01 PM

I would at least slide a silencing device into the exhaust tube to keep fire/sound down. Also keep in mind it is probably going to fuck your paint up. If anything, like the poster above, put it below the fender, not through it.

Bamato 07-28-10 09:00 AM

Aside from the fact that I think it's somewhat silly looking, why would you do a drivers side dump on the exhaust? Seems way less complicated to dump it out the passenger side. Why not go with something similar to a cobra exhaust system with sidepipes? Then at least you can squeeze some mufflers in there somewhere...

Aaron Cake 07-28-10 09:29 AM

OK, in those pictures, the exhaust is exiting on the wrong side. It would be a serious trick of piping to get it to the driver side.

And even if you did, it would deafen you. Seriously.

It is very difficult to properly record the noise of an open exhaust NA rotary because frankly, most cameras can't handle the volume. They chop the sound horribly in an attempt to at least record something and not be overwhelmed.

Take this video for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fPkOnOYRjA

I recorded it using a digital camera. While it sounds tolerable on film, in reality it made my brain itch and I was deaf for about 5 minutes. Granted, that is a full bridgeport engine, but that is only a little louder then a stock port when the exhaust is wide open.

Here is the car idling:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN6nQ5VfRvM

That's like 130 decibels! This sound level is well past the point where it is classified as dangerous. Permanent hearing damage will result after more then a few minutes exposure.

Always remember that the rotary engine is the most efficient way of converting fuel into noise ever developed.

diabolical1 07-28-10 09:32 AM

having driven a few of my past Rx-7s with an open header (both for fun and to get exhausts put on after engine builds), i can tell you, you probably think it's fun now, but i'd give you about 6 hours of it before you're going cry from: (1) the physical assault you've just experienced (and you probably won't exceed 2000 RPM for it), (2) the physical assault you may experience from the cops that pull you over, and (3) the fact that you've butchered your passenger side fender for something that lasted about 6 hours.

believe me, i have stories i could share.

until they experience it for themselves, they never believe you.

zracin 07-28-10 06:50 PM

Ok, removed exhaust today and drove around a few miles with the open headers,..just to see, and yeah, its loud as hell, but only marginally louder than my old car. The idle sounds really good for what you would expect from a rotary. Im ok with the noise level though. The pitch I understand is what probably makes you all so quick to dismiss the idea of open exhaust. i understand why you say it, but for me it works. I took it to 4500rpm a few times, and I know itll get louder, but didnt want to drive it on the street like that and people think im racing. I think it'll be fine for what I want to use it for. Also, correct me if im wrong, having the pipe point out the passengers side will reduce my perceived volume level compared to the sound of it coming from directly under me...not sure about others around me, but dont really care, wont be on the street. I think I will make a tiny spherical resonator under the hood though and try and modify the pitch, not sure how much itll work, but ill try a few designs.

Here is a local drifters FC its an abomination.

zracin 07-28-10 07:08 PM

Keep in mind and actually read what ive written: car will not be driven around town, it is for one purpose only; there is no AC, its a manual steering rack, it will not be registered any longer as of next month, its not insured, its not for chicks to ride in, body panels arent great, its not supposed to be a convenient or low stress luxurious cruising car. I want to take my toy car that handles great and play with a few performance and handling mods, and yes make it really loud and try a few things Ive always wanted to do on a car. I cant find one reason why it wont work for me. I CAN think of a million reasons why this setup would NOT work for anyone else. but I think I can say Ive been briefed officially and have been warned :) I do respect all of your opinions and thanks for the warning. If anyone has more pics of good looking fender exit exhaust, post em up. Thanks

zracin 07-28-10 07:13 PM

not my cup of tea either, but gotta admire his ability and ballsiness to do something different and on his own. I saw his build thread on here a while ago. i kind of like his exit point location but I personally wouldnt go with diamond plate surround though,...proabably alum. riveted panel.

I see what you have done here....

Either that or I am extremely confused

zhardie 07-28-10 11:10 PM

I am on zracin's side! I actually came to this forum searching how to do EXACTLY what he's doing right now. Right now I'm running cat-less and it's loud, but not too loud and I think that finding a way to jank a little muffler under the hood or in the fender would be really cool.
Let us know how it goes, zracin and good luck :)

Bah, I basically have the same setup, and my car is FUCKING LOUD. Beyond comprehension. My cell phone video does it no justice, I can hardly hear my radio cruising down the highway. I have to turn my radio up almost all the way up to hear it.

Bottom line, it's going to be LOUD, ear bleeding loud.

DaBrkddy 07-29-10 12:54 AM

4500rpm is nothing with n/a port inserts and an open block hugger. It's almost just as loud as 2000rpms at the same amount of throttle (if that makes any sense). Try getting up to 7000 at WOT, thats where the sound gets crazy. (besides, you aren't going to race this car between idle and 4500rpms) I don't think any tracks are going to let you race with a wide open exhaust on that car, simply because of the noise. If I were you, I would run a pipe off the manifold to a straight through perforated-core muffler, then turn it and run it out the side. Same effect, less noise.

tasty danish 07-29-10 01:14 AM

You say this will be your track car, and won't be streeted. I'd just like to know how, as most tracks have a 100db limit. Where are you going to use this? Are you going to use earplugs (not kidding.). Having a car with this kind of noise output is irresponsible simply because you can't drive it without causing honest to god DAMAGE. And hearing damage cannot be repaired.

Even if you like the sound and can put up with it, that's irrelevant. Decibels are decibels and physiologically you WILL irreparably injure yourself, or a passenger.

durtled 07-29-10 01:21 AM

speaking of loud...i only have a cat back and its pretty loud...i want to put a test pipe in cause cats rob power. other than the cat what are those other 2 thingys on the exhaust. i thought i saw 2 other things when i had it on the lift to see where my exhaust leak was(rear cat gasket). and if i got a set of after market headers would i need a pipe between the end of the header and the test pipe / cat?

DC 91 fc3s 07-29-10 05:53 AM

^ depends which header you get (RB, Corksport, Pacesetter) and most would, if not all, need an extension from the tip of the header to the stock cat unless you buy the high flow cat like RB offers in there exhaust package..... so im sure its the same thing unless you get the test pipe tailor made to fit...

durtled 07-29-10 08:15 AM

looked at the corksport 1 prolly get that after i do a rebuild/find a new engine

zracin 07-30-10 08:07 AM
