FC3S Intake

Seen several posts of intake for the fc3s lately. Pro's and Con's of cone type filters, cold air boxes and such. AgentD provided me with a link on aim which positions the filter more towards the bottom of the engine bay, where it can reciever cooler air.

This is what I am trying to duplicate but for less than 200 dollars. CP charges 250 I beleive.

I think I will go with a CAI intake similar to the one that 1300cc.com shows since I too have an electric fan and can fabricate brackets to tilt the radiator forward a bit to allow for the tubing. ;)

gotdatfiyah 06-28-03 09:44 PM

this setup seems more logical than any of ive seen so far....anyone gonna post cons or what? this is unlike you people

Agent_D 06-28-03 10:32 PM

it sits right in front of the oil cooler, to work as a ram air setup, ill attach a picture of it installed, its actually a very good place for it to sit :)

deltr0n` 06-28-03 10:36 PM

it requires cutting though...because theres no place for it to go in that area..

Agent_D 06-28-03 10:41 PM

from what ive heard from people that have it, no cutting is required, one guy said he had to trim a little bit on the side, but no cutting

gotdatfiyah 06-28-03 11:21 PM

still looks to be the best solution.

1987RX7guy 06-28-03 11:26 PM

I can probably have that for you for less than 250 dollars. Just need my father to get his welding mashine to my house.

Rx7Nub 06-29-03 12:03 AM

CONS: you could suck up water if you go through a puddle...

gotdatfiyah 06-29-03 12:06 AM

well the stock sucks in air from right under the hood, which when its raining pours in water....

vectorminds 06-29-03 12:10 AM

water is ok :), it will just serve as natural water injection to steam clean our engines....

on a more serious note, i have the checkpoint intake, i just installed it a few days ago... it required trimming the radiator braket about a centemeter back for about 3 inches in order for it to fit... shouldnt have changed anything structuraly though.

Anyone ever think of going to a muffler shop and getting a custom pipe bent to find their aplication? I pay less for a custom pipe and turbo muffler on my first gen RX7 then what they charge for this pipe and filter. INlet pipes are what, 4" in diameter at the most? Paint the pipe and call it good.

Can you post some photos? I'm curious to see where it actually goes that requires so little cutting. What size is the pipe?

1987RX7guy 06-29-03 01:32 AM

I am pretty sure it is 2.75 ;)

Going through a puddle with that thing on there, will suck in alot more water then whatever water gets udner your hood. I'd be afraid it would be harmful. Our cars sit like 4" off the ground, you can easily go through a fairly small puddle, and suck in alot of water.

1987RX7guy 06-29-03 01:45 AM

Well considering that the K&N filter has oil on it makes that a bit different since oil and water don't mix. another thing is that that watter would have to travel where air does at a steep angle upwards. The water probably would not get into the engine and probably sit in the pipe. Now if your in an area that is being flooded that is another story. :(

EDIT I think our cars are 6 inches off the ground not 4. ;)

TonyTurboII 06-29-03 01:45 AM

Than he can use an AEM universal water bypass thing.

Youve obviously never heard the Honda horror stories...
If water wasnt able to get sucked up in the engine why do you think AEM makes a bypass valve for a lot of their CAI kits?

And BTW, a K&N WILL suck up water. The oil in the filter isnt going to stop it...

TonyTurboII 06-29-03 03:05 AM

Hah.

Take a glass. Fill 1/4 with water. Add 1/4 oil. Let seperate. Add another 1/4 cup of water. Watch where the oil goes.

These won't do much unless the whole filter is submerged.

1987RX7guy 06-29-03 03:23 AM

Well all in all you would be an idiot to take your car through a road that is in 6+" of water to begin with. Anyways I am not adding that much cost to my intake I will take my chances with no bypass valve.

Rx7nub it wont matter. Go get a 10 gallon tub and fill it with water. Take the vac nipple off your turbo and stick it in there. Rev the car to 3k and watch it all disappear. It wont hurt the motor. I dont think you can even hydrolock a rotary... not willing to test it on my own though :). Maybe when I get another one to rip apart down the road.

Some of the honda guys were having problems with those breaking and bits going into the motor.

NZConvertible 06-29-03 04:27 AM

The only water that goes into there is in spray and droplet form, which is harmless. If you get solid water onto the filter you're an idiot for driving through a puddle that deep.
