FC at this year's 24 Hours of Lemons

This is may be lounge material, but it's FC specific:

I was at the 24 Hours of Lemons (old lounge thread here: https://www.rx7club.com/lounge-192/24-hours-lemons-625251/ ) with another team this past weekend, and was happy to see an FC on the field. This was an extremely hot, dusty, and unyielding race, and I'm happy to report the FC made it through. Was that a team from this forum? I'd be interested in hearing how they prepped the FC, and if they had any mechanical troubles. Many cars couldn't take the abuse and were DNF.

Here's my write-up: http://howto.globalvicinity.com/gv_w...=306&co=1&vi=1

Yeah, I'm definitely going again, maybe with a beat-up FB. It's one of the few races that's as fun to watch as it is to drive in.

Did you know the team? Did they beef anything up, like oil or cooling?

This is a great club. Your FAQ section really helped us out and gave us the confidence and know-how to run our FC. Our base '87 FC finished third on Sunday. We were the Car and Driver Junior Varsity team. I bought the car back in January for $455 and it had a lot of body damage but only 90,125 miles. Fortunately, the mechanicals seemed to be in good condition. The oil pressure gauge never worked but everything I read on this website indicated that the sender was probably bad. We went into the race with our fingers crossed. Miraculously, about three laps into the race it started working and the engine was keeping great pressure.

We only decided to run in the race about a month ago so we couldn't do much prep. We took five days to prep the car before we had to send it to the fabricator for the cage.

We changed all fluids (ATF, engine, diff) and replaced them with high quality synthetics
New plugs
New pads and rotors
Bled brakes
Yokohama ES100AVS 205/60-14
Removed cats
Replaced cracked ball joint
Swapped base springs for GTUs springs I bought on ebay for $10

That's all we did. We had four drivers and they each drove roughly 3.5 hour stints (that's how long the fuel would last). We only did one driver change per day and we tried hard to keep our noses clean; as you can see despite this strategy we were hit quite a bit. According to the odo which may have been a little off because of the slightly smaller tire size, we travelled 445 miles or 641 laps. Look for video and an article at caranddriver.com in the next few weeks. Also, we'll be running the car again at the Detroit Lemons race. www.24hoursoflemons.com.

Again, thanks to this excellent club for all the tech info and the FAQ section.

Best,

Tony Q.

yup a stock fc cooling system is pretty good ONLY if everything is in good working order or has only 90k on it, i would have gotten in the race with only worrying about getting hit by someone.

well, first, they said the FC was from car and driver, not road and track, and second, i think that video was from last year's event, based on the gulf-colors oldsmobile or w/e in the second half

I'd like to see more of this FC in future events too.

tell me more about the requirements and what you guys are doing to get the 1st place prize at the next race.

We're not quite sure what we're going to do to the car before the Detroit race. We'll certainly be banging out a lot of dents and damage and we'll do the usual fluid/filter changes. First we have to figure out how much we can spend on new/used stuff for the car by sending a pic of our car to the organizer who will then assess the value. The total spending on the car, not including safety equipment, has to be $500. I doubt we'll do anything to the engine except make sure that the 5th and 6th ports are still functioning.

If the personal budget allows, we'll be looking at getting rid of the 14-inch wheels in favor of 15-inchers with wider and gripper 225/50R-15 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDs (wheels/tires/brakes are all considered safety equipment and not included in the car's $500 value but someone has to pay for them.) Tires have to have at least a 190 treadwear rating. http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/rules/

In the spirit of low-budgetness, we'll probably cut the GTUs springs to lower the car a bit, and we might find some used anti-roll bars off of a turbo or GTUs. We'd like to do a more interesting paint job, something like the LeMans winning 787B. Or, we might just wait until a week before the race and do nothing and run the car as is.

I'll see if I can find some post-race pics of the car and post them. The body looks sorry, but mechanically the car is running strong.

TQ

You should totally do a 787b paintjob. Just do it with cheap-*** tremclad or krylon spray cans for the ghetto effect!

Also, were the temps okay on the car? Make sure you have the stock undertray to force the air through the rad and oil coolers.
Did you guys remove the AC? If not do it!
I may even go so far as to cut a hole or some holes in the hood for cooling purposes.

And if I could, I would remove the stock cats and have a pipe bent and put in place of them. You'll have a better top end, and since the cats hold a lot of heat clost to the engine your cooling will be a bit better.

I look forward to seein the pics!

For wheels you can look into finding a set of early 90's mustang V6 rims - the three spoke ones. Ugly, but they are 15x7 w/ ~25mm offset (won't rub), are cheap and fairly light.

Good luck!
