Engine weight?

I am buying an S5 NA engine and need to transport it about 250 miles and the only thing I have to do so is a pickup. Now my question is how much does the engine weigh and will 2 guys be able to lift it onto the pickup or is it just too heavy?

RB_eater 04-17-07 08:30 PM

Rotaries are pretty light, nothing 2 people shouldn't be able to handle. Why dont you rent an engine hoist? Nowadays there even cheap to buy (got my 2 tons for 199CND).

2 guys can't usually pick up a longblock.

JWteknix 04-17-07 08:37 PM

rx8 motor weighs 220lbs im sure it cant be much more then that

JWteknix 04-17-07 08:38 PM

me and my friend picked one up and put it in the back of a seven for transport

the long block weighs about 350 pounds or so. The tranny itself is easily picked up by one person, and if its just the engine, which weighs about 200 pounds or so, then 2 people should be fine. If its the whole long block then you could have problems.

Put your back into girly men! :) I had to carry mine on 2 or 3 round trips from build area across my yard to the install area by myself. Just the block with accessories. tranny was seperate. 2 guys should be able to handle longblock no problem as long as your not stick people

j0rd4n 04-17-07 09:25 PM

what all are you picking up?

according to this site, the core itself only weighs 180lbs, but weighs 278lbs with alt, intake, etc attached

DarkKnightFC 04-17-07 09:28 PM

My motor and tranny's shipping weight was 450.

rotary-guy 04-17-07 09:34 PM

2 guys can do it just fine, my and a buddy picked the complete motor and tranny out of the back of a ford f150, if you cant do it then take off the transmission and do them seperate.

What I picked up couldnt have been over 225-250 pounds. Which was engine block, LIM, turbo manifold, turbo and oilpan and a few other little goodies still on it. Im gauging the weight by 80lb bags of ready mix concrete. Id guess around 3 of them. So Id guess just the block is probably about correct at 180lbs. Which should be no problem at all for 2 people. Add the tranny and that adds another ~70-80lbs dry. Accessories and manifold probably another 60-80lbs depending on what engine. Only 90lbs each on block though

Thats not an accurate weight because it is the weight as it is installed in a plane.

BlueJ7 04-19-07 08:00 PM

It's only a short block but it has everything on it except alternator and belts. Thanks for the help everyone!

13bturbofc 04-19-07 08:08 PM

thats a long block

Yea by about an hour. :molepoke:

Sideways7 04-19-07 10:04 PM

I thought the long block included the tranny....

13b4me 04-19-07 11:02 PM

Not really. It's the engine with all accessories. No wiring or tranny.

MPLSrx7 04-19-07 11:54 PM

can someone explain the difference between a longblock and short?

13b4me 04-19-07 11:59 PM

I thought I just did. :dunno:

Shortblock: Rotor housings, irons, front cover, NO water pump, maybe an oil pan.

Longblock: Shortblock + manifolds, turbo, intercooler, alt, PS, AC, and whatever else makes a complete engine.

Neither traditionally include a tranny or wiring.

Pick up truck = OK
2 people = OK
short block = block only inlcuding oil pan and clutch usually.
Long Block = Complete Engine. Harness attached or not either way it is still a long block.

This thread = waste of time

MPLSrx7 04-20-07 12:06 AM

got it, thanks.

If it was such a waste of time, why did you have to post after the question was answered 5 minutes earlier, and follow up by proclaiming it a waste of time?

Circuit Theory 04-20-07 12:16 AM

I deamed it a waste of time after wasting my time on it.
I am to cool for this thread also which is the main reason I posted it.
:)
