Engine problems
Hi guys, I'm new to the board, but thought I would ask for some of your expertise...I live in Ashland, know a couple guys already on the board....HwilliTT, and Turbotrio as well as being a member of the Columbus DSM club. (I also have a 90 AWD Talon) and anyways, my friend just sold me his Turbo 2 for an insanely good deal, and I couldn't say no....However, he had no mechanical knowledge whatsoever and doesn't have the money to fix this beast... the car had a stumble around 3800 rpm, and also makes very little power...I am of the understanding that the Apex seals are shot. How many seals does this require me replacing (i.e. costs) What am I looking at spending...I'm really not all that worried about it, but would like an idea (I have my Talon to build this winter as well) and would like ideas/suggestions for the car...Right now I just want it to run baseline what it should be doing from the factory. The car has no mods, but the only other question I have is how to remove the moonroof...the thing's stuck, and won't open or close....All your help is appreciated, and I apologize this is so long.
Thanks again-

Depends on what you want to do with the car.
A simple j-spec replacement engine will run you around $800 from someone like Corksport (www.corksport.com). If your looking for more power, then going with a custom rebuilt, street ported engine would be your answer. They run anywhere from $2000 to $5000 depending on what you want and where you get it. Like Hailers said, Mazdatrix is a good place to get a quality rebuild (they are also on the high end of the price scale).
As far as your 3800 rpm stumble goes, a lot of Gen 2s have that problem. Fixing it on my car was a simple as adding extra grounding straps to the engine block.
Best of Luck with your new toy,
