engine core
i found an engine core for sale on ebay, all they know is that it is from a second gen......but is there anyway to find out if its s5 or s4...any identifying marks or anything was what they ask me when i asked what year it came out of?
I'm not sure about any identifying marks, but the S5 rear plate has a bracing rib on the front side of the oil filter pedestal, which the S4 does not. The S5 (or TII) intermediate plate will have a blank spot in the top of the plate where the S4 NA would have an EGR port. (S5 and TII have the EGR port below the pri ports in the int plate.) Also, if it's a TII it'll have open exhaust ports without the splitters.
I hope this helps.

its a 6 port 86-88 nonturbo. Nonturbo because it has 6 intake ports, series 4 because it has the 2 bolt OMP mount on teh front cover. Turbos have 4 intake ports, and s5/s6+ have 3 bolt OMP's.
