would it be ok to use vasolene in between the housings for the coolant orings instead of hylomar?

i believe hylomar is just to keep it inplace. i think vasoline would work.

some older engine builders (10a and 12a) i talked to used to use vaseline on the o-rings but almost all of the newer engine builders (13b and 13REW) use hylomar and or RTV on the o-rings. i doubt it would hurt but if it would last and protect i can't say.

jelly would burn up....thats y u put it on the rotor seals and all. so wouldnt it just be more meaningful to spend $5 and get some hylomar that stays there and helps seal?

I've used vaseline on a couple of engines. There is a drawback I discovered. I built the enigne halfway and went to watch a F1 race. The sun was shining on the assy. When I came back the outer o'rings had expanded/grown and would not fit back into the groove, so I bought some more. Hylomar does not seem to have this effect on the outer o'rings.
Using vaseline or petroleum jelly on rubber o'rings is a common practice in the aircraft industry/air force/army/navy dare I say coast guard? I'd go hylomar if its available. It is at Pepboys. I've never used RTV on engine inner o'rings. |
Yeah, vasoline makes the seals expand, thus, if you ever need to split the block again you can't reuse them. This is the only drawback. (Damn you cartmill for not listening to me!)

Vascelene is fine. I use it to hold everything on the rotors together, but I prefer Hylomar for the coolant o-rings (it's stickier).
As a lubricant, vascelene is poor. I always see people lubing the housings and irons with it. I'm sure it works very well (it's been done forever), but a bottle of proper assembly lube is only a few dollars. |

Only thing I used vaseline for during the rebuild was to keep the damn apex seal corner pieces from popping out during the housing stacking... I wouldn't use RTV on 'em, between the housings...For one thing, you need good clean metal-to-metal contact between all of the housings for electrical flow purposes (think about that rear rotor housing ground, and the alt's mounting hardware). RTV has a nasty tendency to spread all over the place when compressed, and if you let it cure much before the bolt torquing, it's going to get in the way of a good sandwich (especially the red stuff)... |
ok i got some hylomar today, and some RTV black and grey for my water pump housing, front cover, etc. now my one roadblock is i cant seem to get my smaller oil ring out of either rotor..... i got the larger ones out fine cause you can slide a small screwdriver in there in the openings, but there is nowhere to get anything in to pry up the smaller oil rings... anybody have any tips for me here?

Put some on your phone (mic/speaker) Call your phone with a cell phone Laugh at the person who answers the phone with "hylomar" all over there face. He/she won't even feel it, until they put the phone back and see the strands of hylomar from there face to the phone. BTW it only works if you have a frend or some other person over ur "crib" |
or do it to a friends cell phone and call them. Thats what i would do. i dont want hylomar on my personal phone. I used hylomar to keep the combustion ring and coolant rings in. I used engine assembly lube for everything else that needed to be lubricated. Oh yeah. my engines together:). time to throw it in and start it up. :)
