electrontic cut-outs for exhaust?

I'm just wondering..has anybody every tried using electronic cut outs in the exhaust? or would the rotary's exhaust just melt the thing? I'm asking because i've been thinking of a way to make a straight through exhaust/cat unit. That way you can have flames and all the goodies when you want and "turn it off" when you dont want to attract the police.

How would you expect this to work? Exhuast force would go either way it can unless yousetup a valve. Which would prolly fail.

Why not just run a straight pipe then when you need to smog put on the cat?

im asking because i live in toronto and they just recently passed this new law or whatever. and its a minimum of a $10,000 fine for having any bolt on mods or anything remotely related to street racing. they even have this new program on their laptops in the cruisers of all cars and pictures of the engine bay and what it is supposed to look like and if they see anything thats different from the picture..then you are 10,000 in the hole.

oh yea i agree..a 10g fine to deter from street racing is the dumbest thing. they would make so much money for the city if they just built a track somewhere close to the city. i would think a big reason for street racing is because they have nowhere else to race(at least thats my reason for "spirited driving" lol)..if the city would provide an area for racing i think it would eliminate it or at least take a big chunk off the streets.

I don't think so. The idea is when you want more flow, you open the cutout and send the exhaust on it's merry way out. LOUD lol

i didnt mean running open headers with the e-cut out..i meant fabricating a pipe to attatch after the cut out that goes around the cat and connects back to the rest of the exhaust system after the cat. i know people run their 7s without cats all the time.

I why not just put the dump right before the cat? Or why not just gut your cat and get a catback exhaust? Is emissions strict there, or is it based on visual?

Most people I know who run those if they want to have an open exhaust when doing a couple of runs at the track, dyno or whatever. When there done they just close the valve and become quite again.

Sounds a little much just to go around the cat. How about you just build a good exhaust system with a cat and have the cutout before it?

Are you running any kind of exhaust now?

Yes you can do that if you want. Obviously you won't get the same type of gains you would from dumping to atmosphere after the cutout but there will deffinatley be gains by going around the cat.

$10K CAN minimum? That's absurd.

How high do the fines go? Are they enforcing this?

Padlock your hood.

wouldn't it be simpler to go to an exhaust shop and have them weld you in a y pipe with a flange and a cover that you can bolt on and off?

the reason i was thinking of an e-cut out was cuz i want to be able to switch between cat and freeflow exhaust on the go without having to get out of the car and all that..for example..your on the highway running with the cat bypassed and of course you get flames out the tails with no cats..but you notice a cop on the side of the road up ahead...i would want to be able to switch over to the cat so i dont accidentally blow a fireball right in front of the cop lol..my setup now is headers and a catback with straight thru mufflers so the only thing holding the flames back would be the cat..im not concerned with emissions, just the wrong kind of attention the flames would draw from the cops from a freeflow exhaust. they cant write me up for anything if they look under the hood cuz im still running a stock n/a but the flames would definitly raise their eyebrows
