Unhappy Dynomax cat back and mufflers

Well the exhaust fell apart on my 87 and had to be replaced. Literally. The only thing left remaining useful was my main cat. Everything else had to be replaced. Straight pipe into my old cat then into a cat back with dual outlets (all Dynomax). I went to pick up the car and looked at the back of it and was shocked to find that the dynomax mufflers look like discolored $60 used crap. Where the tip comes out of the large part of the muffler it is all discolored. No one on the planet would know I just spent 825$ cdn on this thing. THe sound is awesome and the opening of exhaust makes a sound to be believed and so much more power...don't get me wrong... but it looks like crap. (will post pics later today of it) I fully expected some nice looking exhaust like in the magazines..

I will be talking to the president of Dynomax. I would love to know how he parsonally plans to be king of the exhaust business with this type of product. It looks worse than what was on there...

If I knew that the end part of the exhaust looked like this before I bought it. I never would have bought it.

FYI.

Hmmmm. I just bought the DynoMax cat back from Rotary Performance last week and put them on myself. I don't fully understand your post. The exaust tips seem to be stainless steel for the last six inches. The rest of the muffler is a flat black.

You probably wouldn't be too pleased if you had seen inside the Y pipe that connects to the back of the converter. They use relatively short Y pipe. I looked inside and where the three pieces that make up the Y come together and get welded........well lets say they left a lot of obstructions inside. Someday I'll take a rotary file and cut the excess out.

The sound of the mufflers is really, really, really GREAT! And it'll be some time before I do the rotary file job I talke about. The power gain was a touch more than I was looking for. That why I bought the Dyno Max instead of the others offered. I was hopeful the gain wasn't going to be too much. Gonna have to put a restrictor in come this winter. In spite of what I just wrote, I do like the Dyno Max very much. Just think they coulda cleaned up the Y pipe a bit more.

Mine is not black anywhere. The mufflers are silver and so is the tip coming out of it. The area where the tip meets is discolored, not unlike looking like rust. It is unacceptible and I will be talking to my shop and to Dynomax.

I love the sound too..

I will post pics later today, promise.

Did you buy a premade catback or have one welded up?

Dynomax historicly makes more power than the competators. why did you buy them thinking they wouldn't.
I love the dynomax system I built. Single muffler all stainless from the header back. Way more power than I hoped for. I was very impressed I wrote to them

I did not say they did not produce power. Did you read my text in the first message?

My exhaust is dual on my 87. I will post pics this afternoon.

I absolutely will talk to Dynomax.

Yup. I see you have a problem there. Rust is rust colored. humor.

I think TWEAKED was refering to some of my remarks. I woulda put my money on Racing BEat for making the most power from a catback. I was not kidding about the Y pipe and the left over obstructions in that section from the fabrication.

sounds like you got robbed by whoever you bought your exhaust from. i've had a dynomax cat back system on my 88 for about 3 years now and had no problems at all. and i only paid $259 thru JC whittney. i was skeptical about the price but i saw signifigant power increase and it has held up great so far.

I don't think the discoloration is that bad to warrant a call to dynomax. My PE did that when I first had it on my N/A.

The box they were shipped in may have gotten wet. You should be able to shine them up W/ soft scrub or sos pad

The finish is different than the ones I got. The first third of the tail pipe as it comes out of the muffler is flat black, along with the rest of the muffler. Its is odd, the difference in yours and mine.

Stainless steel will discolour yellowish- blue when it is heated.......and that area has been welded, further changing the metal characteristics. Same thing happened to the pot I let boil dry on the gas stove. You can polish it out, but heat from the exhaust may make it a never ending battle.

Spray paint it 1500 degree stuff

The Rotary Performance Dynomax is just a regular dynomax that they took and painted it black, and jacked the price up $100. What he got was the reg Dynomax.

If you compare both catbacks side by side, they are EXACTLY the same, event he same serial number stamped on them.

Welllll, I learned about stainless steel and the effects of welding and a little about marketing exaust systems at a higher price by using a can of flat black paint. If you ever buy a DynoMax, take a good look at the Y pipe that comes with it. The internals have a lot of left over material that needs to be removed with a grinder.

Well I have no reason to complain. Dynomax sent me two brand new mufflers after I had spoken to them and they said that the condition of the ones that were put on my car were not consistant with new ones out of the box so they shipped me new ones.
Talk about customer service.. wow.
Happy now.

It sounds like the polisher guy at the end of the Dynomax assembly line missed your first set. Glad they worked it out..

My thoughts -

The Dynomax cat-back is about the cheapest cat-back for the 2nd gen, save the Pacesetter, and that thing is a REAL piece of crap. You really get what you pay for.

IMHO, the only thing the Dynomax has going for it is it works, it's a bolt-on, and it's of decent quality.

If you want to make it look better, get some aftermarket exhaust tips and have them welded on. One of the guys here bought some Racing Beat style exhaust tips (also known as RSR style) and had a local muffler shop cut off the Dynomax tips completely and weld the new tips right on to the cans. It really looked pretty good.

I've yet to see a custom muffler-shop exhaust that I would care for - I know they exist, I just think all the muffler shops around here aren't worth a crap. Most of them are all ONE PIECE, from the manifold/turbo to the tips, with a Catco cat and some bobo mufflers. I want an exhaust that fits and hangs with OEM precision and better than stock finish, and is easy to remove and install for working on the car. That's why there's an N1 GT Series under my TII. I'm not afraid to pay money for quality.
