driveshafts...auto same as manual?
 

Alright my friend needs a driveshaft for his NA manual and I found this parts car GXL but its an auto. Will the driveshaft work in his car or no? Also there are alot of parts that can be used except the drivers door a rear quarter. How much would be too much and how much could I sell the engine for if it ran good? Thanks alot.

When I did my auto-5-speed conversion I did notice the driveshaft for the 5-speed was quite a bit longer. I would've rather kept the auto one because it was in exceptonally good condition. But how would the auto work with the 5-speed?

Yes, it is a little over 2" longer because the AT is longer than the MT. I would also like to know how he got it to fit. Um, on second thought, I don't think I want to know. :bash:

Uhh that would make one or the other SHORTER... not longer.

It is all relative. The AT driveshaft is SHORTER than the MT. The MT driveshaft is LONGER than the AT.

The final answer is no. Auto driveshafts cannot be swapped into any other RX-7 beisdes an auto. This also means that they will NOT match up a TII transmission to an NA diff.

If you need a driveshaft, I have one from my GX parts car...$30 plus shipping...has 145,000KM on it (90K miles?) and is smooooth...PM me if you care. :)

I don't see why this is hard to follow. :confused: Hmm, you guys understand that the differential is the same size in both the AT and MT NA models, right? Therefore, the longer AT has a shorter driveshaft, and the shorter MT has a longer driveshaft, since the distance between the engine and differential is the same in both models.

For those students still confused... class please turn to page 8-2 in your textbook. Sniper X please read aloud for the class, and Mazdaspeed7 please come up to the chalkboard and solve for the difference of L1 (correctly this time). Hehehe.

The bottom one is the same diameter as the TII driveshaft, but has the n/a ends. Either someone at the mazda factory was smoking some shot at work, or this is from an an AUTO FC. And before you say its not OEM, the u-joints are staked in, just like all other OEM FC driveshafts.

I have had a thick and a narrow NA driveshaft. Auto ones are in fact a different length.

Different years would be my assumption. It's not an AUTO driveshaft, as the front yoke is different (like a TII yoke) on the auto driveshaft. The auto driveshaft is shorter.

Overall lengths and diameters from the FSM:

NA manual: 967mm, Ø57mm
NA auto: 913mm, Ø57mm
Turbo: 966mm, Ø75mm

So Mazda thinks the auto driveshaft is just over 2" shorter.

I replaced my old GXL's thick one (I'm assuming it was 75mm) with a 57mm one out of an 86 Sport.

A better question would be "where is the AT driveshaft that you were talking about?"

An AT driveshaft is labled with "M051".

Alright, I was misinformed. When I got that driveshaft, i was told is was "most likely" from an auto, b/c the person had never seen one that before.

Was there any models the larger n/a ones came on, or was it just seemingly random?

Yeah, that driveshaft "most likely" came from a piston-head. :D I've heard worse from the junkyard folks, though, such as the transmission that "most likely" came from an AT TII (in the US), LOL. Anyway, the important thing is that it fits on your car.

I don't know which NA models had the thicker driveshaft, but my friend's Sport has one, and it looks original.
