SR20's are NOT forged from the factory. They are turboed with supporting a/f control. the KA you speak of was built forged from what you say. Therefore, the KA WOULD stand up to more abuse then the stock SR20's.

wanna_be_dk 12-28-06 01:05 PM

if you are worried about tires there is someting you need to know\

used junk tires, cheap and many of them

Digi7ech 12-28-06 01:27 PM

^you obviously don't drift. Being able to regain control is the important part lol. Used tires aren't generally known for great grip.

Then after you buy all the junk tires which may tear apart you can spend $5+ dollars per rim to have them mounted.

wanna_be_dk 12-28-06 01:55 PM

not really, you can get good cond. tir and rims for vary cheap, the have like 50% tred on them, you still get good grip, you shouldnt even start out with real race tires when you learn anyways, once you can drift normal tires, you can do the more higher speeds of drifts you get when you put the real race tires on. if need to be able to have the lower speeds to learn, the real race tires have high grip and will cause a much higher speeds. so less grip=less speeds, you will spend out more, but if you start off smartly, it will work.

ch0g0nda 12-28-06 02:07 PM

I never found taking an FC sideways to be nearly as difficult as some of the testimonials here would lead you to believe.

If you've been driving your FC hard (read: grip) for a while and know what it's characteristics are when it's being pushed then you're probably ready to try some of the sideways stuff.

Just remember to keep it all on a track.

wanna_be_dk 12-28-06 02:45 PM

that is a prob with me i have a mt. to do it on, but it is twice as fun

rspeed9i6 12-28-06 06:57 PM

i'll make it short...its so fun drifting my fc!

I know this. You were compairing a built and turboed KA against apparently stock SR20DET's. There are quite a plethora of these engines and what they actually fit. Red tops, black tops, blue tops ect ect ect. IIRC the blue top is the one they swap into the 200sx. I was just stating that you were comparing a built engine against stock engines and basing the reliability of each. ITs apples and oranges.

Anyways, lets not threadjack this guys thread anymore. :D

i learned in fc then when it blew i picked up a 240, and grew in leaps and bounds with drifting and that car. sold the 240 and back to fc. its definitley different but physics dont change for any chassis. setup is important. the best advice i can give you is tire pressure, that is the single most andvantageous thing you can change to a car to change its characteristics when drifting. spin too much? lower rear pressure, understeer too much? raise rear pressure. practice practice practice and get an extra set of wheels so you can change em before you go out so you dont trash your good set of street tires. get an account at the local tire store, they will love you and give discounts if you are in there every week. second best advice is to just go and be safe. so many kids get done watching formula d or initial d or whatever else and race up the canyon just to lock their brakes and slam head first into a k rail or straight off the road where they promptly get stuck 20 feet down the hill. then i pull em out and their very next run is the same damn thing. slow down pay attention and if you lock the tires and cant steer let go of the brake and turn damnit! good luck..

p.s. i wish we had a drift park here. i would much prefer it over a mountain(unpredictability and po po) and parking lots dont really count. now i gotta go drive. YOU BASTARDS!

wanganrunner7 12-29-06 12:56 AM

lol if we had a freakin drift park i would be happy i would be glad to make the drive to where ever it is than drift a a parking lot.

but yea i still don't see the point in putting a sr in a 240, just keep the ka, and don't give me that bull crap about sr's rev higher, just throw in some cams in the ka and you will be fine.

Ok no more thread jacking i promise lol. now i am riled up and wanna drive, F*** i have no damn car.

Drift Off a Mountain 12-29-06 01:02 AM

Where should i learn to drift?

wanganrunner7 12-29-06 02:12 AM

a track where its nice and safe and can be monitored but if you have no race track near you find a parking lot where their is no people or cars, lik a abandon building with a big parking lot that is not close to your city or something that is wide and open, so if you mess up you won't hit anything.

but do drift at a track tho it is kinda worth it, trust me on this ok.

Raziel 12-29-06 12:44 PM

Here are a few sites to see if you have any drift events near you.

we should hold a fc drift meet

The old addage of no replacement for Displacement is far gone. God created turbo lag to give V8's a fighting chance. Remember that quote. Build a TII, tune it right and have at it.

Do what you want, drift the FC or drift a Hachi or drift a 240 or an FD or a Mustang or a GTO or whatever. Do not let anyone influence what you WANT to do. Im a firm believer in setting yourself apart from the rest. It is true that more and more people are goin the 240/hachi route and thus you will separate yourself from that mainstream with the FC.

man you are so right about that a t2 can prduce more power i guess thats why i invested in one and you are also right about setting yourself apart dont be like the rest everyone has a 240 you dont see to many fc drifters but hey we can change that and thats why im learning how to do it in mines

i would rather just keep the engine i have and build it up, i see no need to swap fo real, cause the money you used to by the engine then put it in their, i could have used that to just rebuild the one i have. Oh and now they are putting n/a sr20's in the 240s and turboing them thats just stupid.

that is crazy if i ever get a 240 i would just use it as a daily driver and make it look nice i mean they are nice but because everyone has one it makes me not want one but i dont see why people wont use the engine thats already in it

IM back and after yet another drift event I have more info atleast from my POV.

The FC is not as bad as I had orignally thought. My first time out was ok. Alot of e-braking , and a lot of faints, but still fun. things i added since the last event.

Put P/s back in
Installed dtss eliminators
Installed super drift tien coil overs
Upgraded injectors, boost controller
re-located battery to the bins
installed rear camber adjusted peice
got a set of 15 in tires
shimmed the steering rack
Ordered the steering angle kit (didnt arrive in time)

Results of the last event
The car was much easier to put into a drift with out the use of the e-brake. I started to use power over alot more along with braking into the corner to upset traction. The shimming of the steering rack helped but after installing the current kit I have not I can tell this would have helped sooooo much more. I was getting really bad over steer and didnt have enough angle to pull out of it. My power was there for the long sweepers but the tight corners where a quicker spooling turbo could have been benificial to me would have helped alot. I could have stayed higher in the rpm range. But this is something I can change next time out. Over all the FC is getting better. Like even the 240's they need to be set up. The FC needs more I think than a 240. (I was able to drift the 240's very well through out the course) But the thing I love about the FC's is what everyone else has been saying. You dont see them drifting here in the US as much and they are an attention getter. I am going to continue to use the fc for drifting. The next mods I am going to do to help are

1.5 way ATS diff. (I used a 2 way and a welded diff on the 240's and you can tell the difference when entering the corners that the stock clutch t2 diff is ok , but the aftermaket is way better)

Standalone EMS . I am running a 1.7 r-tek with an SAFC2 and i am having trouble controlling the 1600cc secondaries . I get a bad bog when they kick in.

Energy suspension bushings - Keep that chassis tight

odd and end motor mounts , diff mounts, tranny mounts

All in all , i have a love with my fc for drifting. I see a diamond in the rough. Im going to get this car where I like it hopefully soon. Drifting is fun with the car and challeging and if you can drift a FC you can drift the easier cars like 240's

Here are some pics from my last event

Good info Sideways. Thanks for the input. Once the weather breaks here in PGH, and I get this damn TII put back together, I should be able to hit beaver run http://www.beaverun.com they do drift practice and drift comps on thier skid pad so its safe. :D

alwayssideways 12-30-06 04:52 PM

good deal. Lately with work I try and stay local. I normally run at limerock most of the time.

When i do drift on the roads its normally wide open roads that have very little traffic in the middle of the night so I can see lights. But I normally dont do that too often .
