Door Sensor Problems.

I just recently purchased an 86 FC and am in the process of tearing it down and fixing it up. One problem I noticed was that the "door ajar" sensor was messed up so i pulled it out on both sides. After looking at it I think the way it works is that when your door is open, the wire is grounded to the chassis, and when the door is closed the ground circuit is broken. So... I took out the switch that grounds the wire to the chassis and wrapped it in electrical tape so that there would be no ground circuit, but the dash light still tells me the door is open!

Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions on how to turn off the dash light and that annoying beeping noise?
