Dismantling tranny when stuck in reverse

Ok I have a small dilema. I baught a tranny off of ebay for dirt cheap, the catch was that it was stuck in reverse. I figured this would be an easy fix considering I have taken appart 5 different mazda transmissions that I own including a 1g RX-7 tranny. This tranny I baught off of ebay is from a 90 model convertable. I can't get the shifter assembly or tail housing off because it is stuck in reverse and I can't figure out how to get the shifter cup off. It looks like it is just held in with a pin but how do I remove the cup the shifter ball rides in if it is stuck in reverse and won't move.

P.S. There is evidence that the guy who owned it beat the shit out of trying to get it appart and the entire shifter assembly will probably have to replaced anyways.

You may have to drill an access hole to drive the pin out.
You can plug it later if you need to re-use that tail housing.

Try taking out the 5th/reverse switch and with a screw driver (or 90º angle screwdriver if trans is on car) and flick the push rod towards the back (if I remember correctly). This pop it out of gear. It's happening to me right now... I can fix it, but I need to find the cause!
