dash question.

Alright, so yesterday I picked up a S4 TII shell. And it has a full aluminum dash. Curious how hard it is to wire up a Speedo, and tach if I were to buy seperate gauges? Or should I try and fit a factory cluster?

TheGoldenSB 08-19-12 12:49 PM

Can you snap a picture of the aluminum dash? I have one in my car right now with all aftermarket autometer gauges its not too hard to install.

pics would help

sorry guys, lol started this thread from my phone with the Club App. but heres a picture i have.

Now Ovbiously, i have to get a section in front of the steering wheel. but just curious about the gauges.

TheGoldenSB 08-19-12 07:23 PM

Does it even have any of the factory wiring? If it does you could just run the factory cluster although wouldnt be as accurate or as cool to say the least. Also the giant hole cutout does really sucks now you cant cut your own holes depending what cluster or gauges your want to run. Would probably end up having to put another aluminum sheet over the hole.

89RedsunGTUs 08-19-12 07:37 PM

Yes I have the factory wiring. And I was planning to get another sheet to cover that hole., so either I can start from scratch, or make a stock cluster fit. That's not the issue.

My question is; how would I wire a separate tach and Speedo? I can write the rest of the gauges (i.e. Oil pressure, volts, boost, temp) but i've never run a Speedo. And never run a Tach on a rotary before.

The stock cluster is made to fit the stock dash, it wouldn't be particularly easy to fit it to a flat panel like that.

Any tach set up to run on a four cylinder car will work fine one the rotary.
The speedo will be tough because it's mechanical and the FC cable has a rather unique end fitting, unlikely you'll find something that will accept the FC cable.
You could use a FD VSS (vehicle speed sensor) which will adapt to the FC without too much trouble and then find a suitable electronic speedo.

Thank you. I'll start doing my research for suitable Speedo.

Alright, so does anyone know what I need to do to modify a FD vss to work?

nothing, you just unbolt the FC one, and put the FD one in, and run the two wires.

You need to swap the drive gears.

Rob XX 7 08-20-12 05:23 PM

or you could use a GPS based speedo and forget about cables

TheGoldenSB 08-20-12 05:32 PM

Im running the autometer speedo and im running the stock cable. With my aluminum dash it seems to hold it in place on its own. Just a tempory fix i suppose not completely sure if its even accurate.

That's probably the best option.

Hey which one are you using? That interests me even if it's just a temp option

TheGoldenSB 08-21-12 09:22 AM

Im using the sport comp 5 inch spedo

Auto Meter

Going to see if there is a better way to keep it secure on the gauge and will have to drive next to someone to see how accurate it is.

Here is what it looks like

i dont get why it wont hold in place? is it you cant get behind it to tighten it down?

clokker 08-21-12 11:11 AM

I think he's talking about the cable, Rob.

ah yes gotcha now, he means hold the cable to the gauge

TheGoldenSB 08-21-12 09:37 PM

Yeah cable to the gauge. Will try to see what can be done this week to get it mounted, ill let you know.

TheGoldenSB 08-21-12 10:31 PM

Well ill be working all week so no time to really find a good way to keep it mounted. Here is my rubberband fix getting mounted for the next drift event as i have no time to really make something, definitely not the best way but gets the job done for the meantime. Be creative maybe you will find something that works long term. Will test its accuracy.

That's not a bad idea. Hey being creative is what makes us rotary owners awesome...... Or is that our patience? Lol

Yep sure does haha
